MARY JANE BAYES (later HOPKINS) Mary Jane Bayes was born in around 1870 in Bozeat, Northamptonshire. Her father was ROBERT BAYES and her mother Zilpha PARTRIDGE Her siblings were Robert BAYES, Thomas W BAYES, George BAYES, John BAYES, Zilphia BAYES, Ernest H BAYES, Samuel BAYES and Frank BAYES O n 20 10 1888 she married JOHN EDWIN HOPKINS in Wellingborough Registry Office. At this time she lived in Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. They had six children in three groups of two. ANNIE HOPKINS and ARTHUR HOPKINS were the eldest. Another boy and another girl (my great-grandmother) came in the middle followed by non-identical male/female twins a few years later. In 1905 they had the management of the Five Bells public house in Riseley, Bedfordshire. They also had a carrier business where they would bring goods back from Bedford for villagers. They were still in The Five Bells in August 1922 when their middle daughter married. Later on they had the management of a farm at Raunds, Northamptonshire. My grandmother (their granddaughter) remembers staying there frequently as a girl. She outlived her husband and in her last years had difficulty walking. She was mainly confined to the bedroom of her middle daughter and son-in-law's house at Gold Street, Riseley. My Mother remembers her as a pale figure in bed when she was a girl. She gave a baby doll to my mother and her cousin which were kept on top of the wardrobe. The doll belonging to my mother is currently in my possession. My grandmother and her sister-in-law did much to look after her including washing and ironing the clothes in which she wished to be buried!

Bayes Theorem
"This is Bayes' Theorem. It is named after Rev. Thomas Bayes, an 18th century mathematician who derived a special case of this theorem. Bayes' calculations [2] were published in 1763, two years after his death. Exactly what Bayes intended to do with the calculation, if anything, still remains a mystery today. However, this theorem, as generalized by Laplace [3], is the basic starting point for inference problems using probability theory as logic." [1]

Utposten Nr 8 1997 Hvordan tenkte Thomas Bayes?

    Works by Thomas Bayes
Bayes is known to have published two works in his lifetime: Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures ), and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (published anonymously in ), in which he defended the logical foundation of Isaac Newton 's calculus against the criticism of George Berkeley , author of The Analyst . It is speculated that Bayes was elected to the Royal Society on the strength of the Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions , as he is not known to have published any other mathematical works during his lifetime.
