Thomas Bayes ' father was one of the first six Nonconformist ministers to be ordained in England. Thomas was educated privately, something that appears necessary for the son of a Nonconformist minister at that time. Nothing is known of his tutors but Barnard in [4] points out the intriguing possibility that he could have been tutored by de Moivre who was certainly giving private tuition in London at this time. Thomas Bayes was ordained, a Nonconformist minister like his father, and at first assisted his father in Holborn. In the late 1720s he became minister of the Presbyterian Chapel in Tunbridge Wells, 35 miles southeast of London. On 24 August 1746 William Wiston describes having breakfast with Bayes who he says is:- ... a dissenting Minister at Tunbridge Wells, and a Successor, though not immediate, to Mr Humphrey Ditton, and like him a very good mathematician. Bayes apparently tried to retire from the ministry in 1749 but remained minister at Tunbridge Wells until 1752 when he retired, but continued to live in Tunbridge Wells.

Who was the Reverend Thomas Bayes?
The following is quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica. Bayes, Thomas (b. 1702, London - d. 1761, Tunbridge Wells, Kent), mathematician who first used probability inductively and established a mathematical basis for probability inference (a means of calculating, from the number of times an event has not occured, the probability that it will occur in future trials). He set down his findings on probability in "Essay Towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances" (1763), published posthumously in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. The only works he is known to have published in his lifetime are Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures (1731) and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (1736) which countered attacks by Bishop Berkeley on the logical foundations of Newton's calculus. Here is some more information about Bayes taken from the book The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields . Bunhill Fields is a park in London, England where Bayes is buried (see The Burial Place of Bayes below).

bayes, thomas (1764) An Essay towards Solving a Problem in the Doctrine ofChances , Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London 53.
http://www.bun.kyoto-u.ac.jp/phisci/Gallery/bayes_note.html
Thomas Bayes (1702-1761) Given the number of times in which an unknown event has happened and failed: Required the chance that the probability of its happening in a single trial lies somewhere between any two degrees of probability that can be named." In a (now) famous essay published posthumously (1764), Thomas Bayes asked this question, and gave an answer. The question is a version of "inverse problem":if you know that a certain kind of event E (e.g., head appears on a coin toss) occurs with probability x , you can calculate the probability that E occurs s times out of n trials, and this is a "direct problem"; but Bayes's question goes into the opposite direction, looking for the correct value of x (e.g., what's the probability of head on this coin?), based on the result of n trials, and hence it is "inverse". First, it must be noticed that he defined probability as follows: The probability of any event is the ratio of the value at which an expectation depending on the happening of the event ought to be computed, and the value of the thing expected upon its happening. In short, he regarded probability as a sort of (rational) betting ratio , and he tried to derive the laws of probability (including what we now call Bayes's Theorem) from this definition. Thus it is quite understandable why modern Bayesians call themselves by his name.

Born: 1702
Died: April 7, 1761 Biography:
Thomas Bayes, and English clergyman and mathematician, proposed an interesting argument regarding the nature of evidence and propositions in his Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances (1764). According to Bayes, evidence confirms the likelihood that a proposition is true only to the degree to which the appearance of this evidence is more probable when accompanied by the proposition than not. For example, the appearance of smoke confirms the proposition "There is a fire" very strongly because the appearance of smoke with fire is much more probable than the appearance of smoke without fire. On the other hand, the appearance of an eye in nature does not confirm the proposition "God exists" because the appearance of an eye

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Bayes' theorem is a result in probability theory , which states the conditional probability of a variable A given B in terms of the conditional probability of variable B given A and the marginal probability of A alone. As a mathematical theorem , Bayes' theorem is valid in all interpretations of probability . However, there is disagreement as to what kinds of variables can be substituted for A and B in the theorem; this topic is treated at greater length in the articles on Bayesian probability and frequentist probability Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 Historical remarks

Historical remarks
Bayes' theorem is named after the Reverend Thomas Bayes An Essay towards solving a Problem in the Doctrine of Chances . Bayes' results were replicated and extended by Laplace in an essay of 1774, who apparently was not aware of Bayes' work. The main result (Proposition 9 in the essay) derived by Bayes is the following: assuming a uniform distribution for the prior distribution of the binomial parameter p , the probability that p is between two values a and b is where m is the number of observed successes and n the number of observed failures. His preliminary results, in particular Propositions 3, 4, and 5, imply the result now called Bayes' Theorem (as described below), but it does not appear that Bayes himself emphasized or focused on that result.

Instead, all that I can offer you is one of the two known surviving examples of Bayes's signature. It is from a letter to Philip Stanhope held in the Centre for Kentish Studies. The other surviving signature is on a document related to a lawsuit, and is held in the Public Record Office. The letter to Stanhope is among several manuscripts of Thomas Bayes that were sent to Stanhope. I have written a paper describing this manuscript collection that I found in February of 2001. The paper will appear in a forthcoming issue of Historia Mathematica
