Thomas Bayes
English theologian and mathematician Thomas Bayes has greatly contributed to the field of probability and statistics. His ideas have created much controversy and debate among statisticians over the years. Thomas Bayes was born in 1702 in London, England. There appears to be no exact records of his birth date. Bayes's father was one of the first six Nonconformist ministers to be ordained in England. (4) Bayes's parents had their son privately educated. There is no information about the tutors Bayes worked with. However, there has been speculation that he was taught by de Moivre, who was doing private tuition in London during this time. Bayes went on to be ordained, like his father, a Nonconformist minister. He first assisted his father in Holborn, England. In the late 1720's, Bayes took the position of minister at the Presbyterian Chapel in Tunbridge Wells, which is 35 miles southeast of London. Bayes continued his work as a minister up until 1752. He retired at this time, but continued to live in Tunbridge Wells until his death on April 17, 1761. His tomb is located in Bunhill Fields Cemetery in London. Throughout his life, Bayes was also very interested in he field of mathematics, more specifically, the area of probability and statistics. Byes is believed to be the first to use probability inductively. He also established a mathematical basis for probability inference. Probability inference is the means of calculating, from the frequency with which an event has occurred in prior trials, the probability that this event will occur in the future. (5) According to this Bayesian view, all quantities are one of two kinds: known and unknown to the person making he inference. (6) Known quantities are obviously defined by their known values. Unknown quantities are described by a joint probability distribution. Bayesian inference is seen not as a branch of statistics, but instead as a new way of looking at the complete view of statistics. This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

Thomas Bayes ' father was one of the first six Nonconformist ministers to be ordained in England. Thomas was educated privately, something that appears necessary for the son of a Nonconformist minister at that time. Nothing is known of his tutors but Barnard in [4] points out the intriguing possibility that he could have been tutored by de Moivre who was certainly giving private tuition in London at this time. Thomas Bayes was ordained, a Nonconformist minister like his father, and at first assisted his father in Holborn. In the late 1720s he became minister of the Presbyterian Chapel in Tunbridge Wells, 35 miles southeast of London. On 24 August 1746 William Wiston describes having breakfast with Bayes who he says is:- ... a dissenting Minister at Tunbridge Wells, and a Successor, though not immediate, to Mr Humphrey Ditton, and like him a very good mathematician. Bayes apparently tried to retire from the ministry in 1749 but remained minister at Tunbridge Wells until 1752 when he retired, but continued to live in Tunbridge Wells.

Works by Thomas Bayes
Bayes is known to have published two works in his lifetime: Divine Benevolence, or an Attempt to Prove That the Principal End of the Divine Providence and Government is the Happiness of His Creatures ), and An Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions, and a Defence of the Mathematicians Against the Objections of the Author of the Analyst (published anonymously in ), in which he defended the logical foundation of Isaac Newton 's calculus against the criticism of George Berkeley , author of The Analyst . It is speculated that Bayes was elected to the Royal Society on the strength of the Introduction to the Doctrine of Fluxions , as he is not known to have published any other mathematical works during his lifetime.

I visited there yesterday, as I often do to pay homage :-) For the first time in years I found the attendant's hut occupied, and I was able to buy a copy of "The Official Guide to Bunhill Fields". Many years ago there was a flimsy leaflet which did not mention Bayes, and around 1987 when I arranged for the tomb to be cleaned I had some correspondence with the Corporation of London (who are responsible for Bunhill Fields) about Bayes. They promised to show his tomb on the big display map in Bunhill Fields itself, which they have done - the tomb has been clearly marked in this way for several years now. They also promised that some information about him would be included when they next printed the leaflet. At last I have got a copy of the smart new booklet, printed in 1991.
