I believe the quote from Nietzsche that Bobb Menk asked about is from the
`schlechtes Gewissen', und Verwandtes." In the original it reads: "der
Mensch bezeichnete sich als das Wesen, welches Werte misst, wertet und misst als das `abschaetzende Tier an sich'." There's a translation of the whole book by Walter Kaufmann, published by Vintage. Michael Ossar Kansas State University Date: Tue, 25 Aug 1992 08:28:04 -0500

    CHRISTIANITY
Representative Early Arguments about Christian Dietary Codes: Introduction
Dietary prohibitions and taboos associated with Christianity developed in
response to a classic philosophical schism: should all foods be allowed, or
should portions of the dietary codes of Judaism be incorporated by
Christians? One early Christian debate considered the issue whether or not
all foods were acceptable even those on the Jewish unclean meat lists?
Subsequent debate resulted in the dietary prohibition of three potential
foods: blood, carrion and "things strangled," and foods previously offered or dedicated to idols (Acts 15:20, 15:29). Other New Testament texts pose the condition: "Whether, therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God" (First Corinthians, 10:31).

CHAPTER XVII INIQUITY AND RETRIBUTION IN THE HINDU-BUDDHIST SOURCES CHANCHAL BHATTACHARYA In this paper we mainly shall seek to develop the semantic space which underscores the concepts of iniquity (steya) and retribution (danda) In this paper we shall refer to the Judeo-Christian frame of values through hermeneutic interrelations, and assume that since Brahminism was foundational to Buddhism the way Judaism has been to Christianity, an exploration of the contexts of the steya and danda in their sources will provide us with the semiotic environment common to both Hinduism and Buddhism. The reasons for selecting the themes of steya and danda , stem from the following considerations: (a) The concept of steya is foundational to the eighteen titles of Classical Hindu Law. (b) The idea of danda is inseparable from the idea of steya . In addition, the negation of steya (asteya) is an indispensable prerequisite for pursuing the path of righteousness (dharma) which leads one to liberation (moksa) . Needless to say, the attainment of such a goal is central to the very quest of Hindu thinking and philosophy. Around this central theme of moksa

Buy books: Sacred Books of the East Sacred Books of the East Index Table of Contents Index of Translators Transcription Conventions Available reprints This series was the one of the inspirations for the sacred-texts website. As most of the SBE texts are in the public domain , we have a long term project of converting the entire series to etexts. This page is a progress report on this project, and a way of centralizing known bibliographic information on the SBE. A few of the texts in this series were already available on the Internet, albeit without any bibliographic information, footnotes or introductions. Others have been scanned at sacred-texts for the first time, notably the Upanishads. At this point, 30 of these volumes have been converted into electronic versions; 24 of these have been done as part of the sacred-texts.com initiative. The difficulties of turning these books into etexts are enormous, and requires great care and diligence. The typography is, in a word, substandard; not to diminish the fact that it must have been a substantial accomplishment for its time. The system of transcription of non-western alphabets uses specialized italics and diacritics. The result is that every one of the SBE volumes gives optical character recognition (OCR) software the fits. It is not unusual to have to spend up to 100 hours proofing each volume. One volume ( vol. 5.
