Harry Bateman 's parents were Marnie Elizabeth Bond and Samuel Bateman, who was a pharmaceutical chemist and commercial traveller. Harry attended Manchester Grammar School where he first grew to love mathematics, and in his final year he won a scholarship to Trinity College, Cambridge. He went up to Cambridge in 1900 and was Senior Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos examinations of 1903 when he was awarded his B.A. (being Senior Wrangler means that he was ranked first among those students who were awarded a First Class degree). Bateman was awarded a Smith's prize in 1905 for an essay on differential equations . That year he became a Fellow of Trinity College and he received his M.A. degree in 1906. Some insight into the influence on his early mathematical development by his teachers at Cambridge is gained through a letter he wrote in July 1945 (quoted by in [3]):- My own interest in the integrals of the Euler Laplace type dates, I think, from the time when Sir Edmund

He went up to Cambridge in 1900 and was awarded a Smith's prize in 1905 for an essay on differential equations. That year he became a Fellow of Trinity College. Bateman emigrated to the USA in 1910. The years 1910 -1912 were spent at Bryn Mawr College, the years 1912 - 1917 being spent at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He spent the rest of his life at Pasadena holding a variety of different chairs at the California Institute of Technology. There is one strange aspect to his career which is not evident from the above description. In 1913, while at Johns Hopkins University, he was awarded a Ph.D. At this time he was an extremely eminent mathematician with over 60 publications, some of great importance. He didn't have the usual CV of a Ph.D. student! His doctoral dissertation was entitled The Quartic Curve and Its Inscribed Configurations and his thesis supervisor was Frank Morley Some of his early work was on geometry and the influence of geometry on all his work is evident. In 1905 he studied certain quartic surfaces studied earlier by

Bateman, Harry (1882-1944)

This entry contributed by Michel Barran Bateman made numerous contributions to applied mathematics, including in the fields of aerodynamic, fluid mechanics, electromagnetic theory, thermodynamics, and geophysics. During his later years, he planned an extensive compilation of special functions i.e., solutions of wide classes of mathematically and physically relevant functional equations. Upon his death, Bateman's notes, organized into a large number of shoe boxes, amounted to a veritable mountain of paper. In 1948, arrangements were made between the California Institute of Technology and the Office of Naval Research to employ four mathematical analysts of international reputation to complete Bateman's work. , W. Magnus, F. Oberhettinger, and F. Tricomi collaborated for several years on the so-called "Bateman Manuscript Project," culminating in the magnificent three-volume work on special functions entitled Higher Transcendental Functions.

    17. Batemans Brewery - History...Harry Bateman
Click here for batemans home page. In the words of harry bateman batemansBrewery Mr harry bateman I entered after leaving school
    http://www.bateman.co.uk/Harry_bateman.htm
In the words of Harry Bateman...Batemans Brewery I entered after leaving school in 1894 and took over the business in 1921 upon the death of my father. In the 1920's and 30's it was very depressed times for beer consumption due to strict regulations imposed during the First World War and severe taxes. At one point there was such a slump in beer sales that I had to lay off my entire work force. However, I was so upset in seeing them wondering round Wainfleet with nothing to do that I invited them back and was determined to find them work in the brewery somehow. Having made this move I decided I had no choice but to increase the size of the brewery so bought the buildings across the lane from Salem House and installed a bottling plant. With these buildings there was also a windmill, which had been used for grinding corn for bread and horse feed. Unfortunately the sails were in such desperate need to repair that I decided it was cheaper to remove them. Little did I release then what a landmark the windmill would become for Batemans Brewery. For my 21st birthday my father had given me a pub. In the 1920's we decided it was time to start purchasing some more. Despite finance being difficult, seems the story of our lives so far, I acquired a group of pubs that everybody else thought were worthless. An auctioneer friend of mine from Boston decided I had gone completely mad and said I should give up brewing and join him especially as I now had a young family to support. My father had taught me many things but one of the best things both my parents instilled in me was not to give up so I replied, "If the ship is going down I am going down with her".
