Erasmus Bartholin studied in Holland, England, France and Italy. His first education was from private tutors, then he attended a Latin school. He entered the University of Copenhagen in 1642, receiving his B.A. in 1644 and an M.A. in 1647. From 1645 he studied mathematics at Leiden, travelling to France in 1651 but then going to Italy where he studied at a number of places including Padua from where he received another degree in 1654. From 1656 he was professor of geometry and medicine at Copenhagen until his death. In 1667 he was appointed Royal Mathematician. Bartholin edited Introduction to the geometry of Descartes by van Schooten and also translated Optics of Larissa into Latin. Bartholin wrote a large number of mathematical works but he is best remembered for his discovery of the double refraction of light through a crystal of Iceland spar. He observed the comets of 1665, and made other astronomical observations, publishing his descriptions of these events. Bartholin also prepared for publication the observations of Tycho

DOUBLE REFRACTION BARTHOLIN, Erasmus. Copenhagen, Daniel Paulli, 1670. 4to, pp. [iv], 60, with engraved title vignette; lightly spotted; a good copy in English period-style panelled calf. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. 'Bartholin's major contribution to science was undoubtedly his study of Icelandic spar (specially collected by an expedition sent to Helgusta ir in Reydarfyordr, Iceland, in 1668). 'In physics, as in mathematics, Bartholin was a fervent admirer of Descartes ... as is evident in his attempt to deal with the newly discovered phenomenon of double refraction. Having shown that both rays (solita and insolita) are produced by refraction, and given a construction for determining the position of the extraordinary image, he argued that double refraction could be explained by the Cartesian theory of light by assuming that there was a double set of "pores" in the spar. This puzzling phenomenon proved to be of great interest to both Huygens and Newton' (DSB). First issued with a title page dated 1669, the present issue is printed from the same setting, with only the date altered to 1670. As in the other issue, page 49 is incorrectly numbered 35. There was also an 'export issue', with the shared imprint 'Amstelodami, apud J. Blaeu' and 'Hafniae, apud D. Paulli.'

Bartholin, Erasmus (1625-1698)

Danish philosopher who discovered double refraction in a crystal of Iceland spar (calcite, CaCO ). He termed the two rays the ordinary and extraordinary ray He was not able to explain the phenomenon, which results from the two polarizations of light having different refractivities, and it remained a mystery until Young's wave theory of light. Huygens also investigated the phenomenon. Huygens Young

Thomas Bartholin
Danish physician, naturalist, physiologist and anatomist, born October 20, 1616, Copenhagen; died December 4, 1680; Copenhagen.
Associated eponyms: Bartholin-Patau syndrome (Thomas Bartholin) A congenital syndrome of multiple abnormalities produced by trisomy of chromosome number 13. Ullrich-Feichtiger syndrome A syndrome of multiple congenital abnormalities, including polydactyly with genital abnormalities, clubfoot, partial atresia of the anus, hypospadia, and masklike facies. Biography: Thomas Bartholin is commonly credited with the first description of the thoracic duct in man and Jean Pecquet with recognizing it in animals a few years earlier. He described the intestinal lymphatics and their drainage via the thoracic duct into the venous system. He edited one of the earliest medical journals, Acta Medica Hofmensia, and described an encephalitis epidemic in Denmark in 1657. Thomas Bartholin was the second of the six sons of the famous family produced by Caspar Bartholin and his wife Anna, daughter of Thomas Fincke (1561-1656), who successively became professor of mathematics, rhetoric and medicine at Copenhagen. When his father, Caspar Bartholin the elder, died in 1629, his brother in law, Ole Worm (1588-1654), took over the custody of the young Thomas Bartholin. Ole Worm was famous as professor of medicine and founder of the study of Nordic antiquity.
