PETER BARLOW
BARLOW, PETER (1776-1862), English writer on pure and applied mathematics, was born at Norwich in 1776 and died on the 1st of March 1862. In 1806 he was appointed mathematical master in the Woolwich Academy, and filled that post for fortyone years. In 1823 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society, and two years later received the Copley medal. Steam locomotion received much attention at his hands, and he sat on the railway commissions of 1836, 1839, 1842, 1845. He received many distinctions from British and foreign scientific societies. Barlows principal works areElementary Investigation of the Theory of Numbers (1811); New Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary (1814); Essay on Magnetic Attractions (1820). The investigations on magnetism led to the important practical discovery of a means of rectifying or compensating compass errors in ships. Besides compiling numerous useful tables, he contributed largely to the Encyclopaedia Meiropolitana. JOEL BARLOW SIR GEORGE HILARO BARLOW

Peter Barlow was self-educated but this education was sufficiently good that he was able to compete successfully to became an assistant mathematics master at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich. He was appointed to the post in 1801 and he began publishing mathematical articles in the Ladies Diary and he became sufficiently well established as a leading authority on mathematics that after a while he was asked to contribute various articles on mathematics for encyclopaedias. In addition to these articles, Barlow also published several important books, for example in 1811 he published An elementary investigation of the theory of numbers and three years later he published A new mathematical and philosophical dictionary. He is remembered most for two important contributions. In 1814 he produced a second book, in addition to the one described above, entitled New mathematical tables.

Tracy is the Street's most troubled teenager. The victim of two broken marriages and four actresses, it's a wonder she's not any worse than she already is. The parish priest obviously got wind of Tracy early on by refusing to baptise her. She was eventually bapitised at St Margaret's, Weatherfield by Rev Smedley Betty Turpin Emily Bishop and prophetically Ken Barlow were her godparents. In September 1981 she started attending Bessie Street Junior School - prompting questions as to why she had a different name to her mother.

What You Can Get Away With
Ideas are bulletproof. Saturday, April 17, 2004 One minute late
My local train company has recently been merged into the new 'Greater Anglia' franchise One Railway , which is obviously one of those names devised by a marketing company.
Now, the service doesn't seem to have changed at all since they've taken only, though that's mainly because they're suing exactly the same staff and rolling stock as Great Eastern and Anglia were using before, but I've noticed one problem with the name. My local station, and I think most of the stations in this area (and probably the country) have an automated announcement system which makes announcements of the sort:
The next train from Platform x is the xx:xx (train company) service to (destination)
Which doesn't cause any problems until you have a train going at 20, 30, 40 or 50 minutes past the hour when it becomes, as it was last night:
The next train from Platform 3 is the 20:20 One service to London Liverpool Street which, of course, actually sounds like: the 20:21 service to London Liverpool Street
Admittedly, it's just a minor quibble, but might cause some embarrassing moments for passengers and station staff when people miss trains by a minute or so. But then, I doubt the marketing consultants - who were probably paid a ridiculously large sum of money to come up with the name - ever travel by train with us plebs, so what do they care?

What You Can Get Away With
Ideas are bulletproof. Monday, May 31, 2004 Takuma owes me a tenner or a European GP review
Why does he owe me £10? Because last week, after collecting my winnings from Monaco (thank you again, Jarno) I had £2.50 left in my Hills account which I used to back him each-way at 40/1. So, when he was in third place and challenging for second, I was on for a bonus £10 until he decided to try overtaking when it just wasn't possible. Must be quite annoying for the team as well, as the pace Button had later on showed that Sato could probably have waited and taken Barrichello later on.
One of those races where the accidents are of more interest than the racing, and it's always fun when someone takes out their own team mate. Of course, it was especially fun that Ralf managed to take out a Toyota on his way out of the race. I'm sure that's going to aid his negotiations for a drive there next year. Personally, I'm thinking that it's becoming more and more likely that he's not going to get a drive next year. Williams seem to be thinking of two new drivers, and at the moment a Coulthard/Da Matta combination looks more much better for Toyota than one of Ralf and someone he doesn't object to.
As for the race itself, well it was pretty much over as soon as Raikonnen got into second place and let Schumacher get away. He was perfectly entitled to, and it's good to see that McLaren have finally got some pace back, even if their reliability remains utterly appalling, but it meant we missed out on the straight fight between the Ferraris and the BARs that could have been pretty interesting. Button didn't quite get the breaks, but he'll be glad of yet another third place which keeps him ahead in his championship battle with Trulli, but sometime soon they're going to get a win. BAR seem to be going well on the circuits where Williams did well last year, so they might be worth watching in Canada next time out.
