    Banneker, Benjamin
American astronomer, surveyor, and mathematician who published almanacs 1792-97.
He took part in the survey that prepared the establishment of the US capital, Washington DC.
Banneker was born near the Patapsco River in Baltimore County.
He was self-taught and worked most of his life on a tobacco farm.
He engaged in a long correspondence with politician Thomas Jefferson, defending the mental capacities of black people and urging the abolition of slavery.
In 1753, at the age of 21, having studied only a pocket watch, Banneker constructed a striking clock.
This was the first clock of its kind in America and operated for more than 40 years.
Having taught himself to calculate an ephemeris and to make projections for lunar and solar eclipses, Banneker compiled an ephemeris for each year 1791-1804, though not all were published.
He also wrote a dissertation on bees and did a study of locust plague cycles.

Background Information: Benjamin Banneker was born in 1731. He was the son of Robert and Mary Bannaky. His mother was the daughter of an Englishwoman and an African slave. His father was a former slave who had his freedom purchased from slavery. They lived on a farm along the Patapsco River approximately 10 miles from Baltimore. The farm was known as "Bannaky Springs" because of the fresh water springs on the land. Benjamin grew up helping his family raise tobacco crops. As a child, Benjamin learned to read from his grandmother. She taught him using her Bible, which was the only book she owned. Later Benjamin was able to attend a Quaker school for boys where he learned how to write and do simple arithmetic. It was also at this school that the spelling of his name was changed. It was Benjamin's schoolmaster who changed his last name from Bannaky to Banneker. Benjamin had obtained an 8th grade education by the age of 15. It was then that he took over the family farm. He spent most of his adult life as a tobacco farmer. When Benjamin was 21 years old, he saw a patent watch. He was fascinated with how the watch worked so he took it apart. By studying the pieces he created similar pieces that he carved out of wood. Benjamin used the pieces he carved to build the first clock to ever be fully assembled in America. His clock kept accurate time for over 40 years.

Mathematician and Astronomer Benjamin Banneker Was Born
    November 9, 1731

What do you see when you look at the stars? Benjamin Banneker saw astronomical patterns from which he could make calculations and predictions. A mathematician and astronomer, Benjamin Banneker was born on November 9, 1731, in Ellicott's Mills, Maryland. Largely self-taught, Banneker was one of the first African Americans to gain distinction in science. His significant accomplishments include the successful prediction of a solar eclipse, publishing his own almanac, and the surveying of Washington, D.C. Banneker spent most of his life on his family's 100-acre farm outside Baltimore. There, he taught himself astronomy by watching the stars and learned advanced mathematics from borrowed textbooks.

His grandfather had been a member of a royal family in Africa and was wise in agricultural endeavors. As a young man, he was allowed to enroll in a school run by Quakers and excelled in his studies, particularly in mathematics. Soon, he had progressed beyond the capabilities of his teacher and would often make up his own math problems in order to solve them. One day his family was introduced to a man named Josef Levi who owned a watch. Young Benjamin was so fascinated by the object that Mr. Levi gave it to him to keep, explaining how it worked. Over the course of the next few days, Benjamin repeatedly took the watch apart and then put it back together. After borrowing a book on geometry and another on Isaac Newton's Principia (laws of motion) he made plans to build a larger version of the watch, mimicking a picture he had seen of a clock. After two years of designing the clock and carving each piece by hand, including the gears, Banneker had successfully created the first clock ever built in the United States. For the next thirty years, the clock kept perfect time.
