Narrative Essay
Benjamin Banneker (1731-1806), an African American mathematician and amateur astronomer, calculated ephemeredes for almanacs for the years 1792 through 1797 that were widely distributed. On Nov. 9, 1731, Benjamin Banneker was born in Baltimore County, Md. He was the son of an African slave named Robert, who had bought his own freedom, and of Mary Banneky, who was the daughter of an Englishwoman and a free African slave. Benjamin lived on his father's farm and attended a nearby Quaker country school for several seasons. He received no further formal education but enjoyed reading and taught himself literature, history, and mathematics. He worked as a tobacco planter for most of his life. In 1761, at the age of 30, Banneker constructed a striking wooden clock without having seen a clock before that time, although he had examined a pocket watch. The clock operated successfully until the time of his death. At the age of 58 Banneker became interested in astronomy through the influence of a neighbor, George Ellicott, who lent him several books on astronomy as well as a telescope and drafting instruments. Without further guidance or assistance, Banneker taught himself the science of astronomy; he made projections for solar and lunar eclipses and computed ephemeredes (tables of the locations of celestial bodies) for an almanac.

Benjamin Banneker: Pioneering Scientist

The writing of the book was fine. I am a little older than an "on my own biographt" reader. Nonetheless I was interested in the life of a Black scientist living in the late 1700's. The book follows Benjamin Banneker from being a young boy working on his family's tobbacco farm to clockmaking, land surveying, and almanac writing. His thirst for learning makes him a great role model. The book also put his life in historical context which makes for a great learning device. What really brings the... more...

What Are You Figuring Now?: A Story About Benjamin Banneker

My mother bought me these books when I was in the 3rd grade. They got me through many book reports and biography assignments in elementary school. I had never heard of Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth or Benjamin Banneker before. Even now that I am in college I remember things I learned from these books! I can't listen to a lecture on Washington D.C., slavery or African-Americans and not think about this book! These books are simple enough for any child to understand, and it might just spark ... more...

Benjamin Banneker 's father, Robert, had been a slave who had been given his freedom and was a farmer, while his mother was Mary Banneky. Mary Banneky's mother had been an English girl, Molly Welsh who had been accused of stealing milk and condemned to death for this crime. Her sentence was then reduced to being sent to the British Colony in North America where she eventually became the owner of a farm and married one of her slaves. Their daughter Mary Banneky also married a former slave and he took her surname. Benjamin received some education at the Quaker School although once he was old enough to help on his parent's farm then he had to end his formal education. He was taught to read and write by his grandmother Molly Welsh who also gave him instruction in the Bible. There was, however, little respite for Banneker from the hard physical labour on the farm. When he was 22 years of age Banneker showed his abilities when he made a clock from wood using a pocket watch he had borrowed as a model. The clock struck the hours and continued in good working order for the rest of Banneker's life. Building this clock seems to have brought Banneker some fame in the local community in which he lived and he quickly acquired a reputation for skill in making and solving mathematical puzzles.

Benjamin Banneker was born in Endicott, Maryland on November 9, 1731. His mother was a free black woman and his father was a slave owned by his mother. Benjamin attended a public school run by the Quakers as a free Black and showed an early propensity for mathematics. At the age of twenty-one, after viewing and then dismantling a friends watch, he built a wooden clock that kept accurate time for over forty years. In 1790, Thomas Jefferson appointed Banneker as a member of the surveying team that was to lay out the plans for Washington, DC. The original chief architect of the project, Pierre L'Enfant was fired and took the plans with him when he left. Banneker was then placed in charge. He recreated the plans from memory and completed the project. In 1971 he published an Almanac concerning his observations on astronomy. Banneker mailed a copy of this almanac to Thomas Jefferson along with a letter as a counter to Jefferson's belief in the inherent intellectual inferiority of the Negro. Jefferson apologized and sent a favorable reply in a return letter. Jefferson also forwarded a copy of the Almanac to The French Academy of Sciences. Benjamin continued to publish his Almanac until 1802. He died on October 9, 1806.

He was an African-American astronomer clockmaker , and publisher and was instrumental in surveying the District of Columbia Banneker was the son and grandson of freed slaves from Africa . His maternal grandmother was an indentured servant from England who freed, and then married, her male slave. The original family name was Banna Ka , or Bannakay . His father, Robert Bannakay, was notable for having built a series of dams and watercourses that successfully irrigated the family farm where Banneker lived most of his life. Banneker was taught to read and do simple arithmetic by his grandmother and by a Quaker schoolmaster, who changed his name to Banneker. At age 21, Banneker's life was changed when he saw a neighbor's patent pocket watch. He borrowed the watch, took it apart to draw all its pieces, then reassembled it and returned it running to its owner. Banneker then carved large-scale wooden replicas of each piece, calculating the gear assemblies himself, and used the parts to make the first striking clock ever built in America. The clock continued to work, striking each hour, for more than 40 years. This event provided the impetus to turn him from farming to watch and clock making. One customer was

His grandmother was a maid in England who had been sent to Maryland as an indentured servant. When she finished her seven years of bondage, she bought a farm along with two slaves to help her take care of it. Walsh freed both slaves and married one, Bannaky. They had several children, among them a daughter named Mary. When Mary Bannaky grew up, she bought a slave named Robert, married him and had several children, including Benjamin. Benjamin Banneker grew up on the family farm. Around town it was known as "Bannaky Springs" due to the fresh water springs on the land. Bannaky used ditches and little dams to control the water from the springs for irrigation. His work was so reliable that the Bannaky's crops flourished even in dry spells. The family of free blacks raised good tobacco crops all the time. Molly, Banneker's grandmother, taught him and his brothers to read, using her Bible as a lesson book. There was no school in the valley for the boys to attend. Then one summer, a Quaker school teacher came to live in the valley. He set up a school for boys. Benjamin Bannaky attended this school. The schoolmaster changed the spelling of his name to Banneker. At school he learned to write and do simple arithmetic.

Benjamin Banneker was born in Maryland on November 9, 1731. His father and grandfather were former slaves. A farmer of modest means, Banneker nevertheless lived a life of unusual achievement. In 1753, the young man borrowed a pocket watch from a well-to-do neighbor; he took it apart and made a drawing of each component, then reassembled the watch and returned it, fully functioning, to its owner. At age 58, Banneker began the study of astronomy and was soon predicting future solar and lunar eclipses. He compiled the ephemeris, or information table, for annual almanacs that were published for the years 1792 through 1797. "Benjamin Banneker's Almanac" was a top seller from Pennsylvania to Virginia and even into Kentucky. In 1791, Banneker was a technical assistant in the calculating and first-ever surveying of the Federal District, which is now Washington, D.C.
