In 1885 Johann Jacob Balmer (1825-1898) produces an empirical relationship between the four prominent lines in the hydrogen spectrum. Utilizing the wavelengths (lambda) published earlier by the Swedish physicist and astronomer Anders Jonas Ångstrom, he showed that these agreed with the wavelengths calculated by the formula where n is a whole number, 3 for the red line, 4 for the green, 5 for the blue and 6 for the violet. Using other values of n in addition to these, the equation produces a series of lines which crowd together as n gets successively larger. If n is taken as infinity, the series converges at a wavelength limit of 3645.6 Å. Without having seen such a line, Balmer suggested that there should be one at the edge of the visible violet. A colleague informed him that this line and several more in the ultraviolet region had been detected. These corresponded almost exactly with the frequencies calculated by Balmer's formula. In his paper, Balmer suggested that there might be other series of lines in the hydrogen spectrum corresponding to wavelengths calculated by replacing 2 in his formula by 1 , etc.

Leeftijden van wetenschappers in de natuur- en sterrenkunde

Tijdens het lezen van enkele artikelen viel het mij op dat veel natuur- en sterrenkundigen erg oud geworden zijn. Velen werden tachtig tot negentig jaar. Zou men langer kunnen leven door het beoefenen van natuurwetenschap? Een klein onderzoekje naar de leeftijden van wetenschappers gaf een interessante conclusie. Van een zeventigtal natuur- en sterrenkundigen heb ik de geboorte- en overlijdensjaren opgezocht, en hieruit de leeftijden berekend. De resultaten zijn te vinden in nevenstaande tabellen. De meeste data heb ik gehaald uit een boek uit 1980 (zie ref.1), zodat de overlijdensdata van een aantal wetenschappers, die toch wel vrij zeker dood zijn (anders wordt er geen gebouw naar je vernoemd), niet ingevuld zijn, en dus ook niet meegenomen bij de berekening van gemiddelden.
Opvallend is dat veel 'antieke' natuur- en sterrenkundigen, als Galileo Galilei (78) en Isaac Newton (85) zeer oud zijn geworden, zeker voor hun tijd. Ook deze eeuw kende veel oud geworden wetenschappers, zoals Max Planck (89), Ejnar Hertzsprung (94) en de oudste (bekende) natuurkundige Louis de Broglie (95). Hiertegenover staan echter ook een aantal vroeg gestorven natuurwetenschappers, onder andere Enrico Fermi (53), Paul Ehrenfest (53) en Paul Drude (43). De stelling dat je door natuurwetenschap te doen heel oud kunt worden lijkt dus niet gegrond.
De gemiddelde leeftijd van de 67 door mij bekeken wetenschappers bedraagt 70,6 jaar. Neem ik alleen de 20e eeuwse natuur- en sterrenkundigen mee (35 personen), dan komt dit gemiddelde op 73,8 jaar. Slechts een kleine verhoging dus. Dit is erg vreemd. De leeftijden van 'normale' mensen zijn namelijk sterk gestegen over de laatste paar eeuwen. Is er dus toch een verband tussen wetenschapsbeoefening en levensverwachting?
