The Jim Backus Show USA, syndication (CNP), Sitcom, B/W, 1960 Starring: Jim Backus, Nita Talbot, Bobs Watson Famous since 1949 as the voice of cartoon character Mr Magoo , and later to become a star in the flesh with his portrayal of Thurston Howell III in Gilligan's Island , Jim Backus starred here in his own sitcom, syndicated around the United States in 1960-61 and screened in Britain only a few months later. He was cast as Mike O'Toole, the fast-talking owner of a New York-based news-reporting company, the Headline Press Service, trying to keep his business out of financial trouble and ahead of competitors. As such, he often resorted to his former days as a journalist, going out to get the stories himself, being aided by his attractive secretary Dora, office boy Sidney and his 'supergrass' in the criminal fraternity, 'Fingers' Larkin. The series attempted to balance comedy and dramatic storylines, but rarely succeeded. In America it was also known as Press Time and Hot Off The Wire Researched and written by Mark Lewisohn.

That project initially was a big mess because the team used a seat-of-pants- approach that was not adequate for the complex task. The idea of transformational grammar was not available to them yet. Looking at the FORTRAN-syntax and its constructs supports this evidence, at least from todays vantage point and more than 20 years of compiler construction tools. In 1957 Noam Chomskys published his book "Syntactical Structures" and at about the same time John Backus came up with his concept of syntax trees (a prominent feature in Chomsky's book) and corresponding technical concepts.
