Un indice puntato al futuro
Intervista a MICHAEL ATIYAH

This talking book comes with an interactive ''magic pen'' that works like a hand-held computer mouse pointer. Children can opt to turn the paper pages and listen to the story read with different voices for each character. Or they can interrupt the read-aloud session to play with the magic pen (permanently attached with a wire). They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning. The set also includes a paper piano keyboard and map and human anatomy games. Gail Hudson

    President, Pugwash Conferences
Tam Dalyell ( The Scotsman , May 14) is quite right to draw attention to the important international issue of National Missile Defence and to regret the absence of any reference to it in the General Election campaign. The decision of President George W. Bush to press ahead with NMD has aroused widespread concern. It raises the danger of a new arms race. The view of the UK Government appears to be that the decision has been taken and that opposition by the UK would be ineffective and would damage the "special relationship". But this is to ignore both the complexities of American politics and the very lengthy process of developing a new weapons system. The debate will, in one form or another, continue down the years and a strong and articulate opposition from Europe (including the UK) would be a significant factor affecting the final outcome. There are many in the United States who would welcome such a stand by Europe and would not feel that it was, in any way, anti-American. Many political analysts, including George Kerevan in

    The Atiyah Family
Updated for 2002 My family is a hybrid of Lebanese - Scottish extraction. My father Edward Atiyah was Lebanese. He came to England to study at Oxford University, and there met and married my mother Jean. Edward worked for 20 years in the Sudan government, among other things he started a primitive radio broadcast service there in the second world war. He settled in England in 1945 and wrote several books, including his autobiography An Arab Tells His Story , and The Thin Line , which was much later made into a film by the French director Claude Chabrol, called Juste Avant La Nuit . He also broadcast for the Arabic service of the BBC, and made some appearances on BBC TV in political comment programs (Panorama etc.). I have two elder brothers - (Sir) Michael , and Patrick, and an elder Sister Selma. Michael ( M.F. Atiyah ) is a world class mathematician, responsible for gluing together pure mathematical work in topology with theoretical particle physics. His main work covered K Theory Index Theory , and Yang Mills Theory . He was at one time Professor of Geometry at Oxford, then resident fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, then held a Royal Society research chair, and finally was Master of Trinity College, Cambridge from where he retired in 1997. Whilst master, he was also President of the Royal Society for five years. He has been awarded numerous medals and prizes, including

In this lecture, given at the CMI meeting in May 2000, Michael Atiyah discusses four of the CMI Millennium Problems, their nature and their history. These problems are among the most important unsolved problems in branches of pure mathematics (analysis, geometry, topology, and mathematical physics). Their solution would have profound implications for fluid dynamics and high-energy physics.

    http://www.ictp.trieste.it/~sci_info/News_from_ICTP/News_105/profile.html
Fields Medallist Sir Michael Atiyah recently visited ICTP to share his broad insights on the future of mathematics. Sir Michael Atiyah "U ntil some 20 years ago, modern physics and mathematics seemed to be set on different unrelated paths of discovery. Since then, however, their paths have been crossing with increasing frequency as theories in physics have enriched mathematics and as mathematical concepts have shaped and directed pathbreaking insights in physics."
These were some of the observations made by Sir Michael Atiyah , a Fields Medal winner (1966) and one of the world's most renowned mathematicians, during his recent visit to ICTP. Atiyah travelled to Trieste to participate in the ICTP/SISSA (International School for Advanced Studies) Colloquium on Geometry, which was held in honour of M.S. Narasimhan, long-time head of ICTP's Mathematics group who was celebrating his 70th birthday.
"When the ties between mathematics and physics first began to take hold about two decades ago," Atiyah notes, "it was not clear whether practitioners in these fields would be crossing paths quickly and quietly in the night or forging active long-term ties. Two decades later, the union has proven to be an enduring onestronger today than ever before." Atiyah's cooperative research efforts with the renowned string theorist Edward Witten, which has led to a recent joint publication, is just one example of this growing relationship between the two disciplines.
Atiyah, formerly a professor at Oxford and Cambridge, UK, is no stranger to efforts seeking to find common intellectual ground between different fields of knowledge. In the 1960s, he and Isadore Singer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), proved the 'index theorems,' a mathematical concept providing powerful connections between geometry, topology, algebra and ultimately quantum field theory. He also developed a branch of geometry called K-theory, which was initially concerned with the interrelationship between topology and linear analysis, but ultimately exerted an important influence on physics, including string theory.
