Sir Michael Atiyah
Sir Michael Atiyah received the Fields Medal in 1966 at the early age of 37 for his work in topology. He is one of the pioneers in the development of the K-theory. Moreover, the K-Theory and the Atiyah-Singer Index Theorem linked the areas of geometry, topology, algebra, and calculus. His current work involves mathematical physics and the relationship between geometry and particle physics.

Geometry and Physics : A Marriage made in Heaven
Wednesday, April 3, 2002. 4:00 pm in Hale Auditorium Geometry and Physics have lived together in close association for centuries. The relationship has had its ups and downs, but for the past 25 years it has blossomed in a remarkable manner. New physical theories require very sophisticated mathematical models and have in turn had a profound influence on contemporary mathematics. I will present an overall view of the history and current state of this cosmic marriage.

Polyhedra in Geometry, Physics and Chemistry
Tuesday, April 23, 2002. 12:00 pm in 340 West Hall Polyhedra, particularly regular ones, have been studied by Geometers for over thwo thousand years and have connections with various parts of Mathematics. In the natural sciences they also occur in crystals and more recently in the Fullerenes of Carbon Chemistry. I will discuss models of "particles" in equilibrium under various force laws and the polyhedral shapes that they take up. Even for the simplest models computer simulation is needed and I shall illustrate the answers with computer generated pictures.

Sir Michael Atiyah
Citation by Professor Peter Lachmann
In the course of an immensely distinguished career Michael Atiyah has received too many honours to enumerate. However his election to Honorary Fellowship by the Academy of Medical Sciences must be unusual in that the electing body is unable to evaluate - or, with few exceptions, even to understand - his achievements in his primary field of intellectual endeavour - mathematics. When he was awarded the Fields medal – the equivalent in mathematics of the Nobel prize – in 1966 at the early age of 37, the citation - not made easier to understand by being written partly in mathematical symbols and otherwise in French - is nevertheless clearly a highly admiring appraisal of his work on La K-theorie; le theoreme de l'indice; and les formules de points fixes. These appraisals I will not attempt to paraphrase but it is worth quoting the conclusion: that Michael Atiyah has made major contributions bringing together the fields of topology and of analysis; and that Michael Atiyah combines clarity of view and all-embracing vision with the creative imagination and the perseverance which are required to produce great achievements.

Top Mathematician Professor Sir Michael Atiyah OM, FRS visits Swansea University. Professor Atiyah, who has recently celebrated his 75th birthday, has just been awarded the Abel Prize for Mathematics by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. This is the single biggest mathematics prize in the world. The prize of £480,000, which he shares with Professor Isadore Singer of MIT is for the Atiyah/Singer index theorem which they proved jointly about 40 years ago. This theorem unites apparently disparate branches of mathematics and physics - topology, differential geometry and quantum field theory. The citation for the prize describes the theorem as one of the greatest landmarks of mathematics of the 20th century. It has already been applied very successfully to Theoretical Physics and Mathematics, but it is so general that it is impossible to predict where else it might be applied. Honorary Fellow of Swansea University, Professor Atiyah opened the new accommodation for the Department of Mathematics at the University on Friday 7 May at 9.30 a.m. Following the opening, Professor Atiyah gave a mathematical lecture entitled "Polyhedra in Geometry, Physics and Chemistry". The Head of the Department of Mathematics at Swansea, Professor Truman, said "Sir Michael is a mathematical genius. His work has reunited geometry and physics in a profound way. The Atiyah/Singer index theorem has the same immortal beauty as Pythagoras' theorem. It will continue to intrigue and fascinate future mathematicians and physicists for centuries to come. It is a great honour for us to have Sir Michael open our new accommodation. We are very grateful to him for all the support and kindness shown to us over the years".

There's no Nobel prize for maths, but Sir Michael Atiyah has won the next best thing. James Meek finds out what goes on inside the mind of a brilliant mathematician
Wednesday April 21, 2004
The Guardian

Sir Michael Atiya
Atiyah, who will be 75 tomorrow, won the most prestigious prize in maths, the Fields Medal, in 1966. "But it doesn't carry much money, and these days if a prize doesn't carry much money it doesn't get noticed," he says. Now he has the prestige prize and the money prize. Strictly speaking, it is called the Abel prize, after the 19th-century Norwegian mathematician Niels Abel. Since his first initial was "N", though, it seems reasonable to call it the N Abel prize.
