Foreigners hail Aryabhata as a genius
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA MUMBAI, Oct 16: Two western researchers have hailed the fifth century Indian astronomer Aryabhata as a genius in his own right and paid tributes to his mathematical acumen. James Jacobs Quirinus, an independent researcher in Athens, Greece and a Swedish scholar Bo Klintberg at the London School of Economics and Political Science, have communicated through the internet with the Thane-based Institute of Oriental Study regarding their studies on Aryabhata. Quirinus, who has created his own Aryabhata web page, has noted that the ancient astronomer born at Kusumapura (now Patna) in Bihar was born in 476 AD and came out with his magnum opus Aryabhatiya in verse form around 499 summarizing his concept of astronomy, spherical trignometry, arithmetic, algebra and plane trignometry. ``However some of his formulas are correct, while others are not,'' Quirinus has noted. Aryabhata is the first known astronomer to have initiated a continuous counting of solar days, designating each day with a number, theGreek researcher said adding ``his astronomic ratio, which is to the best of my knowledge the earliest recorded one, is so incredibly accurate that it surprises me that this fact has gone unnoticed to this date.''

This paper examines the theory of a Babylonian origin of Aryabhata's planetary constants. It shows that Aryabhata's basic constant is closer to the Indian counterpart than to the Babylonian one. Sketching connections between Aryabhata's framework and earlier Indic astronomical ideas on yugas and cyclic calendar systems, it is argued that Aryabhata's system is an outgrowth of an earlier Indic tradition.

A recent Aryabhata conference arranged by George G. Joseph may have reported this fact, or related non-fact. As a connected issue, I saw a recent African program reporting many Mali texts, from the 1100 AD period, that are untranslated. As listmembers may know, Mali offers a dry climate, with many libraries of Arabic and regional scientific texts that lay unread, except by their family owners. Why have these Mali libraries been left unread? Could Aryabhata and other important authors (even Omar K., per Ralph's question) be found there? Milo Gardner The Math Forum

Dr. Subhash Kak has started a new column in Rediff. In his first article, he writes about the Kerala school of Mathematics The astronomers Aryabhata and Bhaskara may be familiar to some from the eponymous spacecrafts of the Indian Space Organization. Aryabhata (500 AD ) took the earth to spin on its axis and he described the planet periods with reference to the sun. He also took the solar system to be several hundred million miles across. In all of these things he was ahead of the rest of the world by more than a thousand years. Bhaskara (12th century) was a brilliant mathematician. The last two names belong to the amazing Kerala school of mathematics and astronomy. There is more Three British historians have recently suggested that Kerala mathematics may have provided key ideas for the scientific revolution in Europe. The need for clocks to keep accurate time on ships became of critical importance after the colonisation of America. There were significant financial rewards for new navigation techniques. These historians argue that information was sought from India due to the prestige of the eleventh century Arabic translations of Indian navigational methods. They suggest that Jesuit missionaries were the intermediaries in the diffusion of Kerala mathematical ideas into Europe. S ATELLITE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT
    Aryabhata:
Aryabhata was the first Indian satellite launched into a near earth orbit on April 19, 1975 by an Intercosmos rocket of the erstwhile USSR. Aryabhata carried three payloads - one each for X-ray, astronomy, solar physics and aeronomy. The mission was a success and provided the early experience to ISRO for planning, developing and managing a satellite mission.

Bhaskara - I and II were the first two experimental remote sensing satellites launched on June 7, 1979 and November 20, 1981 respectively by Intercosmos rockets. Both the satellites carried two TV cameras, one in visible and the other in near-infrared band and having a 1 Km resolution and a 3-frequency Passive Microwave Radiometer. The Bhaskara mission saw the birth of a systematic ground segment and applications programme. Together with the capabilities developed in satellite and sensor development, a truly indigenous space-capability was the result of the Bhaskara mission.
Rohini: A series of technological/scientific satellites, launched by India's own launch vehicle, SLV-3. First one was used to measure the performance of SLV-3, second and third carried a SMARTsensor - the first Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera developed in-house. Rohini saw the entry of ISRO to the use of CCD technology and system design for sensors.

Home Aryabhata (476-499) Aryabhata wrote Aryabhatiya , finished in 499, which is a summary of Hindu mathematics up to that time, written in verse. It gives formulas for the areas of a triangle and a circle which are correct, but the formulas for the volumes of a sphere and a pyramid are wrong. Aryabhatiya also contains continued fractions, quadratic equations, sums of power series and a table of sines. Aryabhata gave an accurate approximation for and was one of the first known to use algebra. He also taught that the apparent rotation of the heavens was due to the axial rotation of the Earth. Contribution to trigonometry The first actual appearance of the sine of an angle appears in the work of the Hindus. Aryabhata, in about 500, gave tables of half chords which now really are sine tables and used jya for our sin. This same table was reproduced in the work of Brahmagupta (in 628) and detailed method for constructing a table of sines for any angle were give by Bhaskara in 1150. 1.Ganita (mathematics)
