Collected Works in Mathematics and Statistics
This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. Emil Artin
Emil Artin was an Austro-German mathematician born on March 3, 1898, in Vienna, Austria. He grew up in what is recently known as Czechoslovakia. When Emil was educated there it was a mainly German speaking city. He did not find himself attracted to mathematics at a very young age, which is very odd since most mathematicians are. He did not show any interest to this subject until about the age of sixteen. He claims that “He didn’t have any particular talent for the subject.” The school subject that he did show talent for was chemistry. Artin began his university career at the University of Vienna. After one semester, he was drafted into the Austrian army and he served with this army until the end of the World War I. Then, in January 1919, he entered the University of Leipzig where he continued his mathematics studies. Universiteit van Amsterdam
On March 3, 1898, Emil Artin was born in Vienna as the son of an art dealer and an opera singer. Many mathematicians are familiar with the occurrence of his name on the title page of Van der Waerden's Algebra . Artin's most famous contribution to number theory is the Artin reciprocity law In Holland, Artin's centenary is celebrated at the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The program includes four talks for a general mathematical audience on subjects that Artin was particularly fond of.

    Emil Artin
Emil Artin March 3 December 20 ) was an mathematician born in Vienna, Austria who spent his career in Germany (mainly in Hamburg) until the Nazi threat when he emigrated to the USA in where he was at Princeton University He was one of the leading algebraists of the century, with an influence larger than might be guessed from the one volume of his Collected Papers edited by his students Serge Lang and John Tate . He worked in algebraic number theory , contributing largely to class field theory and a new construction of L-function . He also contributed to the pure theories of rings groups and fields . He developed the theory of braids as a branch of algebraic topology He was also an important expositor: of Galois theory , and of the group cohomology approach to class field theory (with John Tate ), to mention two theories where his formulations became standard. The influential treatment of abstract algebra by van der Waerden is said to derive in part from Artin's ideas, as well as those of Emmy Noether . He wrote a book on geometric algebra that may well have originated the term.
