Emil Artin 's father, also called Emil Artin, was an art dealer. Emil's mother was Emma Laura-Artin and she was an opera singer. All his life Emil would have a love of music which essentially equalled his love of mathematics. He was brought up in the town of Reichenberg in Bohemia which was then part of the Austrian Empire. Although the town today is called Liberec, and is in the northern Czech Republic, at the time that Emil was educated there it was a mainly German speaking city. As the centre of the textile industry it was often nicknamed the "Bohemian Manchester". Artin's childhood was not a particularly happy one and he recounted later in his life how he had felt lonely. He did not find himself attracted to mathematics at a very young age, contrary to what seems to happen to most mathematicians, and up to the age of sixteen the subject meant no more to him than any of his other school subjects and less than some. Rather surprisingly up to sixteen he did not show any particular talent for the subject; at least this was his own view of his schooldays when he spoke of them later in his life. The school subject which he did show talent for, and which he was most attracted towards, was chemistry. He spent a happy school year in France, the happiest of his schooldays, then his interests moved towards mathematics during his final two years at school.

Emil Artin (1898-1962) was born on March 3, 1898, in Vienna, Austria. In 1916, he passed his school certification and after one semester of university work, he was called for military service. In January 1919, he resumed his studies at the University of Leipzig, where he was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1921. Artin was appointed lecturer in 1923, became extraordinary professor in 1925, and became ordinary professor in 1926 at the University of Hamburg. In 1937, along with his family Artin emigrated to the United States. He taught for a year at the University of Notre Dame and from 1938 to 1946 at Indiana University. In 1946, he joined Princeton University, and in 1958 he returned to the University of Hamburg, where he remained teaching until his death in 1962. In 1927, Artin proved the general law of reciprocity, which included all the previous known laws of reciprocity until the time of Gauss . It has become the main theorem of class field theory. In 1961, he published, with John Tate, Class Field Theory In 1926, in collaboration with Otto Schreier, Artin developed the theory of real-closed fields. The following year, with the help of the theorem on real-closed fields, he proved the

Emil Artin March 3 December 20 ) was a mathematician born in Vienna, Austria who spent his career in Germany (mainly in Hamburg) until the Nazi threat when he emigrated to the USA in where he was at Princeton University He was one of the leading algebraists of the century, with an influence larger than might be guessed from the one volume of his Collected Papers edited by his students Serge Lang and John Tate . He worked in algebraic number theory , contributing largely to class field theory and a new construction of L-function . He also contributed to the pure theories of rings groups and fields . He developed the theory of braids as a branch of algebraic topology He was also an important expositor: of Galois theory , and of the group cohomology approach to class field theory (with John Tate ), to mention two theories where his formulations became standard. The influential treatment of abstract algebra by van der Waerden is said to derive in part from Artin's ideas, as well as those of Emmy Noether . He wrote a book on geometric algebra that may well have originated the term.

He has the distinction of solving one of the 23 famous problems posed by Hilbert in 1900. Artin was not a Jew but his wife was a Jew so when the 'New Official's Law' (1937) affected those related to Jews by marriage he was forced to leave Germany. In 1937 he emigrated to the USA and taught at various universities. He was at Notre Dame for the year 1937-38, spent eight years at Indiana from 1938 to 1946 and then was 12 years at Princeton from 1946 to 1958. In 1958 Artin returned to Germany, being appointed again to the University of Hamburg which he had left in such unhappy circumstances over 20 years before. Artin's first work was on quadratic number fields, working on the analytic and arithmetic theory. In 1927 he made a major contribution to the theory of noncommutative rings, called hypercomplex numbers at this time. In particular he worked in the theory of associative algebras. In 1944 he did important work on rings with the minimum condition on right ideals, now called Artinian rings. He presented new insight into semi-simple algebras over the rationals.
