Archimedes of Syracuse (ca. 287-ca. 212 BC)

Greek mathematician who flourished in Sicily. He is generally considered to be the greatest mathematician of ancient times. Most of the facts about his life come from a biography about the Roman soldier Marcellus written by the Roman biographer Plutarch. Archimedes performed numerous geometric proofs using the rigid geometric formalism outlined by Euclid , excelling especially at computing areas and volumes using the method of exhaustion He was especially proud of his discovery for finding the volume of a sphere showing that it is two thirds the volume of the smallest cylinder that can contain it. At his request, the figure of a sphere and cylinder was engraved on his tombstone. In fact, it is often said that Archimedes would have invented calculus if the Greeks had only possessed a more tractable mathematical notation. By inscribing and circumscribing polygons on a circle for instance, he was able to constrain the value of pi ) between 3 10/71 and 3+1/7.

Archimedes, of Syracuse
Biographical Information
Occupation, Sphere of Activity Archimedes of Syracuse ( c287-212 BC ) was a mathematician and inventor. His father was Pheidias, an astronomer, of which we know nothing. While he is famous now, as he was then, largely because of his inventions, it is reported that he despised invention as being less "pure" than geometry, and he never wrote about his creations. Little is known about his life, though he is described by some as having been a relative - by others as a close friend - of Hiero (or Hieron) II, King of Syracuse, who employed him as a tutor to his son. He almost certainly spent a part of his life studying in Alexandria - where he is thought to have played an important role in the development of Euclidian mathematics. It is probably here that he met Conon of Samos, who he remained in correspondence with as a personal as well as professional friend. He wrote a number of books, ten of which have survived largely intact. These deal mostly with geometrical problems - particularly centres of gravity of solids, studies of spheres and conical sections, spirals and other mathematical matters. Among his propositions, particularly interestingly, are an approximation of 'pi' - which he reached after circumscribing and inscribing a circle with two 96-sided polygons, an explanation of the law of levers, a foundation for theoretical mechanics, a means of accurately approximating square roots of large numbers, a precursor to Newton and Leibniz's calculus and a proposed system of numbering for large figures which went high enough - 8x10^16 in modern notation - to count to a higher number than the number of grains of sand that would fill the universe - or so Archimedes believed.

When I heard that Conon, who was my friend in his lifetime, was dead, but that you were acquainted with Conon and withal versed in geometry, while I grieved for the loss not only of a friend but of an admirable mathematician, I set myself the task of communicating to you, as I had intended to send to Conon, a certain geometrical theorem which had not been investigated before but has now been investigated by me, and which I first discovered by means of mechanics and then exhibited by means of geometry. Now some of the earlier geometers tried to prove it possible to find a rectilineal area equal to a given circle and a given segment of a circle; and after that they endeavoured to square the area bounded by the section of the whole cone and a straight line, assuming lemmas not easily conceded, so that it was recognized by most people that the problem was not solved. But I am not aware that any one of my predecessors has attempted to square the segment bounded by a straight line and a section of a right-angled cone [a parabola], of which problem I have now discovered the solution. For it is here shown that every segment bounded by a straight line and a section of a right-angled cone [a parabola] is four-thirds of the triangle which has the same base and equal height with the segment

His discoveries serve as the foundation of much of what we know today. An Interview by Constructed by Keri Daubler '99. Spring 1998. Q: Before we discuss your mathematical discoveries, could you briefly describe your life? A: I was born in Syracuse, Sicily, in 287 B.C., and was the son of Pheidias, an astronomer. I knew King Hieron II and his son, Gelon, very well. I traveled to Alexandria, a great center of learning for mathematicians, early in my life to study under Canon and other mathematicians who had studied under Euclid. Unlike many of my counterparts, I returned home rather than staying in Alexandria, and devoted the rest of my life to a serious study of math, physics, and the design of many mechanical devices. Q: How would you describe your life as a mathematician?

First edition Maurolico's translation of Archimedes, one of the two most important versions of the sixteenth century (the other being Commandino's). Francesco Maurolico (1494-1575) made this translation and paraphrase between 1534 and 1549, but it was not published in his lifetime. Giovanni Alfonso Borelli discovered Maurolico's translation amongst his manuscripts in Messina, and prepared it for publication, but during the uprising against the Spanish the almost completed printing was destroyed.
Francesco Maurolico 'ranked with Commandino as a first-rate student of Archimedes, and indeed these two ... were the outstanding interpreters of Archimedes in the first three-quarters of the century. However, Maurolico's interest, unlike Commandino's, was not in establishing a philologically sound version or translation of the Archimedean texts that survived but in presenting mathematically coherent texts that achieved Archimedes' objectives. This will become particularly clear when we examine below those texts in which Maurolico skillfully grafted medieval material onto the traditional Archimedean texts' (Clagett, Archimedes in the middle ages, vol 3 part III, 'The medieval Archimedes in the Renaissance, 1450-1565', p. 749; all of his chapter five, 'Francesco Maurolico and the Medieval Archimedes, pp. 749-1053, is devoted to this translation.)

    Archimedes of Syracuse
Introduction: the greatest of Greek mathematicians
In the third century BCE, Rome was involved in a series of military conflicts (the Punic Wars) with the Greek city-state of Carthage , situated across the Mediterranean Sea on the African coast . Caught in the middle of these conflicts was Syracuse, another city-state on the coast of Sicily, which was claimed by both sides. Initially allied with Carthage against Rome at the outset of the First Punic War in 263 BCE, Syracuse soon switched allegiance. The King of Syracuse, Hiero II , managed to keep war at bay by honoring this treaty with Rome, but the situation became precarious in the later years of the century as the Carthaginian general Hannibal was gaining the upper hand in Spain and Italy against poorly managed Roman armies. Archimedes (287 - 212 BCE), son of Phidias, an astronomer, was thought to have been a kinsman of Hiero. In his youth, Archimedes ventured to Alexandria in Egypt to avail himself of the best education to be found in the Greek world. There he would have been able to study the texts at the great Library of Alexandria, where Euclid had worked, and he made friendships with other philosopher-mathematicians, most notably Conon of Samos with whom he corresponded for many years. Archimedes eventually returned to Syracuse, where he earned fame as an "engineering consultant" to the king, inventing many clever devices for the military defense of the city: catapults, grappling hooks, and improvements to the architecture of the city walls.

Recommend a Friend While historians of mathematics generally consider Archimedes to have been one of the greatest ever mathematicians, in his own time he was probably better known for his practical achievements: the Archimedean screw, the compound pulley, the laws of leverage and his ‘engines of war’. We, however, will be concerned with his mathematical works, which cover a wide variety of topics. In On Spirals, Archimedes was interested in various areas, lengths and tangents associated with what are now called ‘Archimedean spirals’. One theorem shows that the circumference of a circle has the same length as a certain straight line associated with a tangent to his spiral. An Archimedean spiral can also be used to trisect the angle. The Measurement of the Circle , Archimedes showed that the area of a circle of radius R and circumference C is equal to that of a right-angled triangle, where the sides containing the right-angle are of lengths R and C. Combined with the above result from On Spirals , this effectively reduced the problem of squaring the circle to that of finding a particular tangent to the Archimedean spiral. By considering polygons (of 96 sides) inscribed and circumscribed about a circle, Archimedes also showed, in modern terms, that 3

    BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Archimedes of Syracuse is considered one of the greatest thinks of the ancient world. He established the principles of plane and solid geometry, discovered the concept of specific gravity, conducted experiments on buoyancy, demonstrated the power of mechanical advantage, and invented the Archimedes Screw, an auger-like device for raising water. Archimedes was born in the Greek city of Syracuse, on the island of Sicily, in 287 B.C. He was the son of Phidias, the astronomer and mathematician. What we know of Archimedes' life comes from his extant writings, and from the histories authored by Plutarch, Cicero, and other historians several centuries after his death. Due to the length of time between Archimedes' death and his biographers' accounts, as well as inconsistencies among their writings, details of his life must remain subject to question.

    BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY
Archimedes is not only considered one of the greatest intellects of ancient times but also is ranked as one of the three greatest mathematicians in history, alongside Isaac Newton (1642-1727) and Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855). In addition to his contributions to physics and his sometimes spectacular engineering achievements and inventions, Archimedes' greatest contributions were in the field of geometry.
    Early life and education
Archimedes was a true genius and a highly original individual who was skilled at both thinking and doing. As a very young man, for example, he invented and built a planetarium that reproduced the movements of the planets. This ability to excel at both the theoretical and the practical (thinking and doing) marked him as a uniquely gifted person as much at home with deep ideas as with complicated tools or mechanisms. After completing his formal studies in Alexandria, he returned to Syracuse where he remained the rest of his life.
