Paris, l'Imprimerie Impériale, 1808 The Théorie, here present in its first edition, is based on lectures given by Lagrange at the École Polytechnique in 1795 and 1796. The first part treats the basic principles of calculus based on power series, without the use of inifinitesimal considerations. The second part applies these principles to the study of curves and surfaces, and the theory of contact. The third and final part gives applications to mechanics.
The Leçons, here present in its second edition, is based on lectures given in 1799. It is a further development of the first part of the Théorie, treating inter alia the theory of angular sections and that of singular primitive equations. The Supplément treats the calculus of variations by the methods introduced in the Théorie. DSB incorrectly states that the first edition of the Leçons appeared in the same journal in 1801: in fact, it appeared in that year in the Séances de l'École Normale.
Provenance: Author's presentation inscription on title of first work 'Au Citoyen Monsieur Maurice de la p[art] du Conseil de l'Ecole Polytechnique, and signed 'Lagr.', this inscription repeated on title of second work but there signed only with Lagrange's initials, inscriptions just touched by binder's knife; ink stamp of the `École Polytechnique on titles of first two works.

Earliest Uses of Symbols of Calculus
Last revision: Oct. 5, 2001 Derivative. The symbols dx, dy, and dx/dy were introduced by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) in a manuscript of November 11, 1675 (Cajori vol. 2, page 204). f'(x) for the first derivative, f''(x) for the second derivative, etc., were introduced by Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813). In 1797 in the symbols f'x and f''x are found; in the Oeuvres, Vol. X, "which purports to be a reprint of the 1806 edition, on p. 15, 17, one finds the corresponding parts given as f(x), f'(x), f''(x), f'''(x) " (Cajori vol. 2, page 207). In 1770 Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) wrote for in his memoir In 1772 Lagrange wrote u' du dx and du u'dx Nouveaux Memoires de l'Academie royale des Sciences et Belles-Lettres de Berlin. History of Mathematics that Arbogast introduced this symbol, but it seems he does not show this symbol in A History of Mathematical Notations. D was used by Arbogast in the same work, although this symbol had previously been used by Johann Bernoulli (Cajori vol. 2, page 209). Bernoulli used the symbol in a non-operational sense (Maor, page 97). Partial derivative.

Earliest Known Uses of Some of the Words of Mathematics (F)
Last revision: March 31, 2004 F DISTRIBUTION. The F distribution was tabulated - and the letter introduced - by G. W. Snedecor Calculation and Interpretation of Analysis of Variance and Covariance (1934). (David, 1995). It is sometimes called Snedecor's F distribution although the letter was chosen to honor Fisher. Fisher's original development of the analysis of variance (see the entry variance.) was not based on F but on a related quantity z. (see the entry z and the z distribution.) The term F distribution is found in Leo A. Aroian, "A study of R. A. Fisher's z distribution and the related F distribution," Ann. Math. Statist. FACTOR (noun). Fibonacci (1202) used factus ex multiplicatione (Smith vol. 2, page 105). Factor appears in English in 1673 in Elements of Algebra by John Kersey: "The Quantities given to be multiplied one by the other are called Factors." FACTOR (verb) appears in English in 1848 in Algebra by J. Ray: "The principal use of factoring, is to shorten the work, and simplify the results of algebraic operations." Factorize (spelled "factorise") is found in 1886 in Algebra by G. Chrystal (OED2).

Eastern Softballers Win Three By Greg Schneider The Eastern softball team had its best week of the season as it went three-for-three to even out its Division II record at 5-5. The Golden Knights defeated York Catholic, 10-7, at Catholic on Tuesday, topped Kennard-Dale, 8-6, on the road on Wednesday and then ripped York County Tech, 12-2, in five innings back at Eastern on Friday. The Knights had only five hits on Tuesday, but parlayed them with three Catholic errors to post 10 runs. The key inning was a six-run third that put the Knights up 7-0. From there they hung on for the win. Heather Strausbaugh had a single and double and two RBI to lead the Knights' attack. Erin Baker also had a double for Eastern. Ashley Grove started in the circle and got the win for the Knights. She was relieved in the sixth by Lauren Miller, who closed out the victory. On Wednesday, the Knights had 10 hits, eight of them singles, and scored eight runs, all of them needed in the wild game that was not settled until the Knights put out a Kennard-Dale rally that produced three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the game tight. Tracie Leonard and Katie Geisler stroked key doubles for the Knights.
