Antiphon was an orator and statesman who took up rhetoric as a profession. He was a Sophist and a contemporary of Socrates . These definite assertions are, however, disputed by some historians. The problem seems to revolve round whether there was one Sophist philosopher named Antiphon who lived around this time or whether there are two, or as some experts claim, three distinct Antiphons. In what follows we shall assume that at least the orator named Antiphon was the same person as the Sophist who made the mathematical advances. This is the same line as taken in [1] while in [2] only Antiphon as an orator is discussed without reference to the philosophical or mathematical works. In [7] the hypothesis that Antiphon is one, or several different men is discussed without any definite view being preferred either way. A number of speeches which were written by Antiphon have been preserved. Three of these speeches were real speeches made by Antiphon as the prosecutor in murder trials. Twelve speeches are specimen speeches written by Antiphon for use in teaching students the skills of prosecuting and defending clients in cases. The speeches come as three collections of four; two prosecution speeches and two defence speeches for each of three different cases.

University of Texas at Austin Until now, the standard collection of the fragments of "Antiphon the Sophist" was the magisterial work of Diels-Kranz ( Die Fragmente der Vorsokratiker th ed. vol. 2, 334-370 [Berlin 1952]), who established the order and numbering of fragments used by almost all scholars since, including Untersteiner ( Sofisti , vol. 4, 1-211 [Florence 1962]). Much has been written about Antiphon since these editions, and in 1984 a tiny scrap of papyrus was published that forced scholars to abandon some generally accepted restorations in a papyrus text published earlier and to reexamine some widespread views about this late fifth-century thinker. Thus a new edition of the fragments has long been desired, and scholars working on the sophists should be most grateful to Pendrick (hereafter 'P') for undertaking not only a new edition but the first extended commentary on the fragments as well. P's work began as a 1987 dissertation written under Leonardo Tarán at Columbia, and this much revised edition has now been published in this handsome edition by Cambridge University Press. Word count: 2451 words In what follows I will present and discuss the main parts of the work: introduction, text and translation, and commentary. I will linger on a little over the introduction, because there the general line of interpretation that P. applies in his commentary becomes apparent.
'unitarian' as well as the 'separatist' position.
As regards the works of Antiphon the sophist, P. first of all discusses the textual problems provided by the list of Hermogenes of Tarsus. Partly as a result of these problems the work entitled 'Politicus', and even the works 'On truth' and 'On concord', which Hermogenes attributes to the sophist, have also been ascribed to Antiphon of Rhamnous. P. opposes such interpretations and sides with the majority of editors and commentators, who count them as works of Antiphon the sophist. To these works he then adds the 'Dream-book'. Hermogenes does not mention it, but according to P. this may simply be due to the fact that is was not included in the 'corpus Antiphonteum', the ancient standard collection of the writings of Antiphon of Rhamnous, into which the writings of the sophist were included at some time or other and for some unknown reason an inclusion which, according to P., already in antiquity contributed to the wide-spread confusion of Antiphon the sophist with the Rhamnousian.

Rhodes, Department of Classics, University of Durham Word count: 1816 words After a short Introduction, ch. i provides an account of the sophistic movement as a background to Antiphon's career, stressing the spirit of enquiry and scepticism, and the fondness for paradoxes and challenges to traditional thinking and for competition and debate. To attribute to all the sophists a primary interest in rhetoric is unfair, but they were all interested in one of more aspects of logos, and particularly in the art of arguing on both sides of a subject and in the relationship between argument and truth. They are better regarded as humanists, who "see in human beings the one measure of knowledge and values" (p. 33), than as total relativists. G believes that "the ultimate argument for a unified Antiphon is the coherence of the picture that results" from viewing the different works together (p. 8), and the remainder of the book is devoted to presenting that argument.

This edition collects all the surviving evidence for the fifth-century BCE Athenian sophist Antiphon and presents it together with a translation and a full commentary which assesses its reliability and significance. Although Antiphon is not as familiar a figure as sophists such as Protagoras and Gorgias, substantial fragments have survived from his major works, On Truth and On Concord, including extensive remains preserved on papyrus. In addition, information about his doctrines is preserved by ancient writers ranging in time from Aristotle to Simplicius and beyond. The introduction provides a brief sketch of Antiphon, his works, and his place in the fifth-century BCE sophistic movement, including his important contribution to the contemporary debate over the relation of law (nomos) and nature (physis). It also deals with the controversial question of the identity of Antiphon the sophist in relation to Antiphon of Rhamnus and other men of the same name.
