Dear One and All Lovers of Solid Geometry,
Here are a few more notes to add to David Coia's queries (6/13)
concerning the "parallelepipedon" and David Fowler's definitions,
quotations and notes (6/14). In Charles Hutton's *Dictionary* (volume 2,
1795, p.199), the terms "parallelopiped" and "parallelopipedon" are
presented equally, and he remarks that such a polyhedron "is only a
    particular species" of a prism.
Charles Davies, the source of David Coia's quotes,
wrote a dictionary with his son-in-law William G. Peck:
*Mathematical Dictionary and Cyclopedia of Mathematical Science ....* New York: A. S. Barnes and Company, 1855, reprinted 1883. Davies and Peck give only one term, "parallelopipedon" (p. 419)

STEVE POELLOT/CDS University Kicks Off Its Year-Long Party
    October 20, 2003
After half a semester of wind-up, Columbia kicked off its 250th anniversary celebration this weekend, with three days of a activities designed to satisfy all of the various Columbia affiliates attending. Although the weekend featured events ranging from a birthday party for Alma Mater to a video of various celebrities wishing the University happy birthday, some unfortunately fell flat. When it turned out that the giant cake in the shape of Low Library was made mostly of plywood, and that the headline act of the weekend's finale concert had cancelled at the last minute, many students were left with a vague sense of anti-climax. But this weekend's festivities were only the beginning of a year-long celebration comprised of parties, discussions, and other forms of self-congratulation. So if the opener left you wanting more, don't worryit's on its way. And for those of you who missed the festivities, here's a wrap-up of the main events. Happy Birthday, Alma Mater!

History PREFACE The compiling of the following pages has been a labor of love. The unveiling and dedication on the battlefield of Gettysburg, July 3, 1913, of the memorial erected in honor of Major-General Wells and officers and men of the First Vermont Cavalry, on the confederate Avenue, in front of Round Top, was an occasion never to be forgotten by all who were present, men of the North, and men of the South. This charge of the First Vermont Cavalry was so swallowed up in the multitudinous incidents of the great battle that few have followed it as it deserves. I am prod to say that Vermont, however, remembers well her gallant sons in this soul-stirring feat, and that by a happy though the Legislature of the state made an appropriation for a monument to be erected near the spot from which the regiment started upon its memorable charge. /s/ N. COLUMBIA'S 250TH ANNIVERSARY
    250 Years
Columbia College was chartered in 1754 as King’s College. Throughout its lifetime, the College, and what was to become the University, grew and evolved due to strong leadership and a solid academic base but ultimately due to its people. In this timeline, we highlight key people, as well as events, from Columbia’s 250 years.
Classes are suspended due to the Revolutionary War. Middle: Benjamin Moore (Class of 1768)
Bottom: DeWitt Clinton (Class of 1786)

Columbia College graduates its first class of eight students, among whom is future governor and statesman DeWitt Clinton.
The 1787 College charter is amended and reenacted and a new curriculum is introduced.

The names in this alphabetical list are represented by archival collections at the given locations in North America. No attempt is made to indicate where papers or letters by one person may also be located in the collection of another. Such cross references are often given in the collection descriptions in the indicated sources. Some mathematicians have been included for whom there are no known collections of papers. They are here only as reminders of the inevitable incompleteness of the historical record. Still there may be a possibility of filling in such gaps sometime. Corrections and additions to the list are welcomed; please see How to Provide Further Information for the List of Collections . The key to the abbreviations is given at the end.
