Andre-Marie Ampere
Andre-Marie Ampere was a French Physicist, Mathematician, Chemist and Philosopher, best known for his work in Electrodynamics. The unit of electric current, Ampere, bears his name. He was born on the 20th of January ,1775 at Poleymieux in France, sixteen miles away from the city of Lyon. Andre-Marie's father was a successful businessman in Lyon. In 1782, he decided to spend more time on Ampere’s education by taking some time off from his business. It was during this time that his father inspired in him a thirst for knowledge. He mentions in his autobiographical writings, that his father, instead of forcing him to stick to a specific curriculum “knew how to inspire in him a desire to know." At an early age Ampere completed reading all the articles in the L’Encyclopedie in alphabetical order, and there are reports that even much later in life he was capable of recalling them from memory successfully. Ampere's interest in Mathematics grew from a very tender age. At thirteen, he was writing a treatise on conic sections, and had already submitted a paper to the

    #2H. Magnetic Fields History
Until 1820, the only magnetism known was that of iron magnets
and of "lodestones", natural magnets of iron-rich ore.
It was believed that the inside of the Earth was magnetized in the same fashion, and scientists were greatly puzzled when they found that the direction of the compass needle at any place slowly shifted, decade by decade, suggesting a slow variation of the Earth's magnetic field. How can an iron magnet produce such changes? Edmond Halley (of comet fame) ingeniously proposed that the Earth contained a number of spherical shells, one inside the other, each magnetized differently, each slowly rotating in relation to the others. Edmond Halley Hans Christian Oersted Hans Christian Oersted was a professor of science at Copenhagen University. In 1820 he arranged in his home a science demonstration to friends and students. He planned to demonstrate the heating of a wire by an electric current, and also to carry out demonstrations of magnetism, for which he provided a compass needle mounted on a wooden stand. While performing his electric demonstration, Oersted noted to his surprise that every time the electric current was switched on, the compass needle moved. He kept quiet and finished the demonstrations, but in the months that followed worked hard trying to make sense out of the new phenomenon.

Andre-Marie Ampere Born: 20 Jan 1775 in Lyon, France Died: 10 June 1836 in Marseilles, France Despite not attending school, AndrŽ-Marie Ampere was to be given an excellent education. t has been claimed that Ampre had mastered all known mathematics by the age of twelve years but this seems somewhat of an exaggeration since, by Ampre's own account, he did not start to read elementary mathematics books until he was 13 years old. In 1797 Ampere earned a living tutoring mathematics until 1802 when he was appointed professor of physics and chemistry at Bourg Ecole Centrale. Appointed professor of mathematics at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1809 he held posts there until 1828. Ampere was appointed to a chair at Universite de France in 1826 which he held until his death. Although a mathematics professor, his interests included, in addition to mathematics, metaphysics, physics and chemistry. Ampere was also making significant contributions to chemistry. Ampre also worked on the theory of light, publishing on refraction of light in 1815. By 1816 he was a strong advocate of a wave theory of light, agreeing with Fresnel and opposed to Biot and Laplace who advocated a corpuscular theory. In the early 1820's, Ampere attempted to give a combined theory of electricity and magnetism after hearing about experimental results by Danish physicist Hans Christian Orsted. Ampere formulated a circuit force law and treated magnetism by postulating small closed circuits inside the magnetised substance.

    André-Marie Ampère
André-Marie Ampère January 22 June 10 ), was a French physicist who is generally credited as one of the main discoverers of electromagnetism . The ampere unit of measurement of electric current is named after him. He was born at Poleymieux-au-Mont-d'or, near Lyons and took a passionate delight in the pursuit of knowledge from his very infancy, and is reported to have worked out long arithmetical sums by means of pebbles and biscuit crumbs before he knew the figures. His father began to teach him Latin , but ceased on discovering the boy's greater inclination and aptitude for mathematical studies. The young Ampère, however, soon resumed his Latin lessons, to enable him to master the works of Euler and Bernoulli . In later life he was accustomed to say that he knew as much about mathematics when he was eighteen as ever he knew; but his reading embraced nearly the whole round of knowledgehistory, travels, poetry, philosophy and the natural sciences. When Lyons was taken by the army of the Convention in , the father of Ampère, who, holding the office of juge de paix had stood out resolutely against the previous revolutionary excesses, was at once thrown into prison and soon after perished on the scaffold. This event produced a profound impression on Andre-Marie's susceptible mind, and for more than a year he remained sunk in apathy. Then his interest was aroused by some letters on botany which fell into his hands, and from botany he turned to the study of the classic poets, and to the writing of verses himself.

From an early age he could be seen to be brilliant, mastering many aspects of mathematics by the age of 12. In 1801 he became professor of physics and chemistry at Bourg and eight years later he was invited to take up the post of professor of mathematics at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris. Ampere's major break though came in 1820 after he heard about the discovery that Hans Christian Oersted had made in observing that a magnetic needle was deflected when placed near a current carrying cable. Ampere was given to sudden flashes of inspiration. True to form he developed a relationship between electricity and magnetism within a week and he had prepared a paper for publication. Ampere formulated a law of electromagnetism, often called Ampere's Law that mathematically describes the magnetic force between two currents. In addition to this he undertook many experiments from which he managed to explain some electromagnetic phenomena that had been observed. However one of the major reasons why he is associated with electric currents in particular is that he was the first person to develop an instrument to measure the magnitude of the current flowing in a conductor. This was of immense importance because up until this time no quantitative work had been possible and this opened up the way for a far greater understanding of electricity and current flow. In later work by other scientists this instrument was caleld a galvanometer.
