Like most Russian mathematicians there are different ways to transliterate Aleksandrov 's name into the Roman alphabet. The most common way, other than Aleksandrov, is to write it as Alexandroff. Pavel Sergeevich Aleksandrov's father Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Aleksandrov was a medical graduate from Moscow University who had decided not to follow an academic career but instead had chosen to use his skills in helping people and so he worked as a general practitioner in Yaroslavskii. Later he worked in more senior positions in a hospital in Bogorodskii, which is where he was when Pavel Sergeevich was born. When Pavel Sergeevich was one year old his father moved to Smolensk State hospital, where he was to earn the reputation of being a very fine surgeon, and the family lived from this time in Smolensk. The city of Smolensk is on the Dnieper River 420 km west of Moscow. Pavel Sergeevich's early education was from his mother, Tsezariya Akimovna Aleksandrova, who applied all her considerable talents to bringing up and educating her children. It was from her that Aleksandrov learnt French and also German. His home was one that was always filled with music as his brothers and sisters all great talent in that area.

He proved an important result but then, after failing to prove the continuum hypothesis (not surprising since it can neither be proved or disproved) he thought he was not capable of a mathematical career and became a theatre producer. After a short term in jail in 1919 at the time of the Russian revolution, Aleksandrov returned to Moscow University to resume his studies. Aleksandrov studied with Urysohn Emmy Noether Courant and Hilbert with their results on when a metric space is metrizable. They also visited Hausdorff in Bonn and Brouwer in Holland in 1926. Aleksandrov became close friends with Hopf and Kolmogorov . He laid the foundations of homotopy theory and was the first to use the phrase 'kernel of a homomorphism'. Pavel Urysohn is also known as Pavel Uryson. His father was a financier in Odessa, the town in which Pavel Samuilovich was born. He came from a family descended from the sixteenth century Rabbi M Jaffe. It was a well-off family and Urysohn received his secondary education in Moscow at a private school there. In 1915 Urysohn entered the University of Moscow to study physics and in fact he published his first paper in this year. Being interested in physics at this time it is not surprising that this first paper was on a physics topic, and indeed it was, being on Coolidge tube radiation. However his interest in physics soon took second place for after attending lectures by Luzin and Egorov at the University of Moscow he began to concentrate on mathematics. Urysohn graduated in 1919 and continued his studies there working towards his doctorate. The authors of [8] write:-

Aleksandrov, Pavel Sergeevich
Russian mathematician who was a leading expert in the field of topology and one of the founders of the theory of compact and bicompact spaces. Aleksandrov was born in Bogorodsk (now Noginok), near Moscow, and studied at Moscow University, where he became professor of mathematics 1929. Aleksandrov introduced many of the basic concepts of topology, such as the notion that an arbitrarily general topological space can be approximated to an arbitrary degree of accuracy by simple geometric figures such as polyhedrons.
Of great importance, too, were his investigations into that branch of topology known as homology, which examines the relationships between the ways in which spatial structures are dissected. He formulated the theory of essential mappings and the homological theory of dimensionality, which led to a number of basic laws of duality relating to the topological properties of an additional part of space. His passion for international cooperation led him to supervise the publication of an English-Russian dictionary of mathematical terminology 1962.
