Profile
English nobility. Spiritual student of Saint Colgan Deacon . Head of the York cathedral school c. . Minister of education under Charlemagne in . Established schools at cathedrals and monasteries . Established scriptoria, dedicated to copying and preserving ancient manuscripts, both pagan and Christian; that we have as much as we do of the writings of classical Roman authors is largely due to Alcuin and his scribes. Credited with the invention of cursive script, in which letters are connected for greater writing speed. Revised and organised the Latin liturgy, preserved ancient prayers, and helped develop plain chant. Advocated the doctrine that the Holy Ghost proceeds from the Father and the Son jointly. Unfortunately, the East resented Charlemagne 's assumption of the title of Holy Roman Emperor; this hardened their opposition to the doctrine, and contributed to the rift between East and West.

Ethelbert, Archbishop of York
Fathers and other Christian writers. Ethelbert, in his search for books, travelled far, and we know that he visited Rome among other places. Everywhere his learning and power of sympathy won for him friends, so that his influence for good was widespread and he ranks as one of the foremost among the promoters of education in the eighth century. In 766 Archbishop Egbert died, and Ethelbert was unanimously chosen to succeed him. He was consecrated 24 April, 767, and received the pallium from Adrian I in 773. As archbishop he continued his simple and laborious life, working with such success that he is regarded as one of the founders of the Church of York. He set himself to rebuild the minster which had been destroyed by fire in 741. It is impossible to obtain certain information as to the extent of his work, but Alcuin speaks as though he began, finished, and consecrated it:
He speaks of its magnificence, the columns and crypts, bright windows and ceilings, the tall crucifix of precious metals, the thirty altars it contained, and the gold, silver, and jewels employed in the decoration of sacred vessels and altars. Eanbald and Alcuin were employed by the archbishop to superintend its construction. From York Ethelbert developed both missionary work and educational effort. He sent out from his school both preachers and teachers, the latter of whom founded new schools while the former spread the truths of

Welcome to Daniel Jackson's Guide to the Pubs of York! Welcome to my guide to all of the Pubs within the York Ring Road! From the Ackhorne to the York Arms University of York for several years, I've been able to vist quite a few of the pubs around York. This is my guide to more than 200 pubs and bars that I have visited and can (just about!) remember (plus a few that have now closed). Which pubs do I think are the best? I've marked my list of the 'Top Ten' with a star (usually the ones with great beer!) You can email any comments or questions to myself at: email danieljackson.co.uk Maps are available as links to MultiMap.com , and are referenced by postcode, so may not be exact in their positioning. NOTE: All opinions expressed in this document are entirely personal comments. I have visited all of the pubs and bars that are listed here (except any marked still 'To Do'), but please remember that pubs I have visited in the past may be very different now (also, some I may have only visited once, so I may not present an entirely balanced view).

From 796 until his death he was abbot of the great monastery of St. Martin of Tours He was educated at the cathedral school of York, under the celebrated master Ethelbert of York , with whom he also went to Rome in search of manuscripts. When Ethellbert was appointed Archbishop of York in , Alcuin succeeded him in the headship of the episcopal school. He again went to Rome in , to fetch the pallium for Archbishop Eanbald I of York , and at Parma met Charlemagne. Charlemagne persuaded him to come to his court and gave him the possession of the great abbeys of Ferrieres and Saint-Loup at Troyes From to , Alcuin had as pupils the king of the Franks, the members of his family, the young men sent for their education to the court, and the young clerics attached to the palace chapel; he was the life and soul of the Academy of the palace, and we have still, in the Dialogue of Pepin (son of Charlemagne) and Alcuin , a sample of the intellectual exercises in which they indulged. One surviving tool of the drive to reform education is Charlemagne's circular letter

Eanbald II
(Died c.AD 808)
Archbishop of York
Died: c.AD 808
Eanbald II, a favourite pupil of Alcuin, was consecrated the successor of his namesake in the Archiepiscopal See of York on 14th August AD 796. Alcuin himself would, no doubt, have been elected, had he chosen to return to Northumbria. He did, however, write frequently to the new Archbishop, laying down many rules for the direction of his province. Alcuin sent to York, amongst other gifts, a ship'd load of metal ( stagnum ) for the roofing of the bell tower at York Minster. Our first full day in York started with a guided 2 hour walking tour, conducted by local volunteers; our's was a very nice man name John. The tours start at 10:15 in front of the Exhibition Square. Our group had about 10 tourists from Australia, Spain, and the States. The tour starts with the Roman history of the city and an explanation that the wall that still encircles the city is (mostly) not Roman, but Medieval. The present wall was built on top of the old Roman wall; see the photo where the Medieval wall, with arches, is on top of the Roman wall.
