How to Use the Psalms according to Alcuin of York
Introduction and Translation by
Michael Treschow
Kelowna, 1994 Introduction While contributing to the reform of the Carolingian church, Alcuin of York (d. 804) wrote a short work called De Psalmorum Usu Liber (A Book on the Use of the Psalms). It may sound like a treatise but it is essentially a devotional work, offering prayers and meditations based on the psalms. The editors of the Patrologia Latina took another of Alcuin’s shorter works ( Officia per Ferias ) and set it as the preface to these devotions. It fits there very aptly, for it explains the nature of the Christian's devotional use of these ancient Hebrew prayers. This preface lists nine uses of the psalms in private devotion whereby they can help with personal need in various troubles or with the personal desire for a greater love of the Lord. Thus they lie outside the liturgical use of the psalms. But they assume the intimate knowledge of the psalms that comes from the regular liturgy of the daily offices. Alcuin urges his readers to take such knowledge and use it in their own personal lives to seek the Lord and his blessing. incipit.

Blessed Alcuin of York, OSB Abbot (PC)
(also known as Flaccus Albinus)
Born in York, England, c. 735; died at Saint Martin's in Tours, France, May 19, 804. Alcuin studied under Saint Edbert at the York cathedral school, was ordained a deacon there, and, in 767, became its head. Under his direction it became a well-known center of learning. Alcuin travelled to Rome to obtain the pallium for his bishop and at Parma met Charlemagne who immediately enlisted his services in the cause of education. He was invited by Charlemagne to set up a school at his court in Aachen, Germany, in 781, where Charlemagne himself became a pupil. Alcuin also became Charlemagne's adviser. Alcuin was appointed abbot of Saint Martin's Abbey at Tours in 796 by Charlemagne. At Tours he restored the monastic observance with the help of Saint Benedict of Aniane Under his direction the school at Aachen became one of the greatest centers of learning in Europe. He was the moving force and spirit of Carolingian renaissance and made the Frankish court the center of European culture and scholarship. He fought illiteracy throughout the kingdom, instituted a system of elementary education, and established a higher educational system based on the study of the seven liberal arts, the trivium and the quadrivium, which was the basis of the curriculum for medieval Europe. He encouraged the use of ancient texts, was an outstanding theologian and exegete. Using his skills he fought the heresy of Adoptionism, which was condemned at the Synod of Frankfurt in 794, and exerted an influence on the Roman liturgy that endured for centuries. He wrote biblical commentaries and verse and was the author of hundreds of letters, many still extant, and a widely used rhetoric text

Alcuin of York (735 - 804) was an Anglo-Saxon Benedictine who receives his learning from a student of Bede. In 778 he accepted an invitation from Charlemagne to a meeting of the leading scholars at Aachen, where he was made head of Charlemagne's Palace School. Alcuin and the others emphasized the study of scriptures and philosophical texts in their original languages, as opposed to Latin translations which had been much more common. Alcuin was also responsible for the development of Carolingian minuscule, a form of writing which became common. It was much easier to read than the older, unspaced capital script which had been in use. Alcuin of York
While looking in my diary to find out the date of Ascension Day this year (why I was doing it I can't remember) I noticed that the day, 20th. May, is also the feast day of Saint Alcuin of York, Deacon and Abbot, someone of whom I have never heard. So who was he, and what was his claim to fame. Alcuin was born sometime about 735 into a high ranking family who lived in York. Little is known about his early years except that he was educated at Archbishop Ecgberht's School, the school of York cathedral. At the end of his time as a pupil he stayed on as a teacher. He became a monk in the Benedictine Order, and was later ordained deacon. In 788 he became headmaster of the cathedral school. During his time as a teacher at the school Alcuin built up a fine library, one of the best in Europe, and made the school one of the most important centres of learning in Europe. In 791 Alcuin accepted an invitation from the Frankish king Charlemagne to go to Aachen in Germany to a meeting of the leading scholars of the time, and after this meeting, he was offered the post of head of Charlemagne's Palace School at Aachen. This was no altruistic gesture on Charlemagne's part, for Alcuin brought to his court the very best of English learning. During his time at Aachen, Alcuin worked on the development of the Carolingian minuscule, a clear script which became the basis of the way we write today. This script had a large impact on the history of mathematics. It was a script which was much more readable than the old unspaced capital script which was in use before, and a lot of technical books were copied in the ninth century using it. Most of the works of the ancient Greek mathematicians which have survived until today do so because of the survival of these copies.

York's rich Anglo-Saxon heritage celebrated in new lecture on Alcuin
One of York's most illustrious sons, Alcuin of York, will be commemorated in a new series of annual lectures beginning on 31 October in St William's College. The lecture is a partnership between the University's Centre for Medieval Studies and the Dean and Chapter of York Minster. Alcuin was an early medieval scholar, brought up and educated in the cathedral community of York. In 767 he became master of the cathedral school where he had a seminal influence on the young clerks, who included future archbishops. His fame spread and the Emperor Charlemagne invited him to join his court. Alcuin went on to fashion Charlemagne's educational and religious policy which had long-lasting effects on European culture. "Alcuin was one of the most learned and influential figures of the Middle Ages," says Dr Catherine Cubitt of the Centre for Medieval Studies. "He lived in York when it was a leading political and commercial capital, and its cathedral school was a European centre of scholarship. The vitality and prosperity of this Anglo-Saxon age in York is often overlooked by popular concentration on the Vikings. We aim to rejuvenate interest in York's earlier pre-eminence by establishing this lecture." The first York Alcuin Lecture will be given by Professor Donald Bullough, Emeritus Professor at the University of St Andrews, and the foremost scholar of Alcuin studies. His biography of Alcuin is shortly to be published by Oxford University Press. The lecture is at 7.30 in the McLagin Hall, St William's College on Friday 31 October, and is open to all.

The Alcuin Society
The Alcuin Society was founded in 1965 by G.A. Spencer for booklovers world-wide to promote a wider appreciation of what goes into finely-wrought books. The name "Alcuin" was chosen to honour the memory of Alcuin of York (735 to 804 AD). Alcuin was a man who cared not only about books but handwriting too, which he rescued from the proliferation of bastard styles of the period. As, in effect, Charlemagne's "Minister of Culture", Alcuin selected the most pleasing and certainly the most legible script of his day, and gave it official blessing. Known as the "Caroline Miniscule", it ultimately led to our modern lower-case alphabet. To further its aims, The Alcuin Society engages in a wide range of activities, many in collaboration with the Canadian Centre fro Studies in Publishing at Simon Fraser University: lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and competitions. Annual design awards are made by a panel of judges for the best in Canadian book design. Amphora , the Society's quarterly journal, covers a wide range of topics related to the book arts: collecting, typography, type design, type-setting, calligraphy, paper-making, ornamentation, illustration, printing and binding.

He wrote a long poem describing the men associated with York's history before he left for the continent. In 781 he accepted an invitation of Charlemagne to go to Aachen to a meeting of the leading scholars of the age. He became head of Charlemagne's Palace School at Aachen and there he developed the Carolingian minuscule, a clear script which has become the basis of the way the letters of the present Roman alphabet are written. Before leaving Aachen, Alcuin was responsible for the most precious of Carolingian codices, now called the Golden Gospels. These were a series of illuminated masterpieces written largely in gold, often on purple coloured vellum. In 796 Alcuin became abbot of the Abbey of St Martin at Tours, where he had his monks continue to work with the Carolingian minuscule script.
