Albertus Magnus
Albert, b. c.1200, d. Nov. 15, 1280, was a medieval German (Swabian) theologian, scholastic philosopher, and scientist who is best known as the teacher of Thomas Aquinas. In his own day, however, Albertus had greater renown than his illustrious pupil. Already called "the Great" (Magnus), Albertus was accepted as an authority equal to Aristotle in philosophy and was known as "the universal doctor" for his work in natural science. Albert was beatified by Gregory XV in 1622. On Dec. 16, 1931, Pope Pius XI declared him a saint and a doctor of the church. Feast day: Nov. 15. James A. Weisheipl Bibliography: Kovach, F. died Nov. 15, 1280, Cologne; canonized Dec. 16, 1931; feast day November 15

Albertus was the eldest son of a wealthy German lord. After his early schooling, he went to the University of Padua, where he studied the liberal arts. He joined the Dominican order at Padua in 1223. He continued his studies at Padua and Bologna and in Germany and then taught theology at several convents throughout Germany, lastly at Cologne. During his final years he made two long journeys from Cologne. In 1274 he attended the second Council of Lyon, France, and spoke in favour of acknowledging Rudolf of Habsburg as German king. In 1277 he traveled to Paris to uphold the recently condemned good name and writings of Thomas Aquinas, who had died a few years before, and to defend certain Aristotelian doctrines that both he and Thomas held to be true.

Passages from the diary of the Comte de Saint Germain : Paris, 1749 AD " I recently discovered this strange box in the archives of the masonic lodge "Grand Orion de France" in Paris, of which I am part. It made me think immediately of one of the music boxes Msr. Philippe Lemarchand produces, and which I intend to purchase. But, according to the documents that I found with it, this very box is much older."

"The Key to one’s Ultimate Truth" as it's called, would have been produced around the year 1275 by the well known alchemist Albert le Grand, ( "Albertus Magnus" as he is referred here), and might be the key to the fullfilment of one’s ultimate quest for truth."
Click diagram to enlarge.
"I have been studying this object for a few weeks now, and here are my conclusions at this point: According to the writer of the documents, it seems to have been made with three different metals: The light parts with a gold based alliage, the dark parts with lead, and the red parts with an unknown alliage. The only thing the writer seems to know for certain about this last alliage is that human blood was part of its composition."

Upcoming Discussion
and Announcements Spurred by our University's mission to pursue truth through the mutually illuminating powers of human intelligence and Christian faith, Marquette scientists, philosophers and theologians formed this faculty group in November 1998 to serve primarily as a forum for discussing issues at the boundaries of their disciplines. The name "Albertus Magnus Circle" was chosen in honor of St. Albert the Great, the 13th century theologian and natural philosopher who is the patron saint of natural scientists today.
In the spirit of St. Albert, who distinguished between knowledge gained through faith and knowledge gained exclusively through human reason but who also perceived their connection, participating faculty identified the following purposes for the group:
1) To provide a setting within which Marquette professors in the Theology, Philosophy and various science departments can discuss issues at the boundaries of their disciplines;
2) To nurture respect for one another's disciplines by better understanding their distinctive data, methods, scopes and limitations;

Albertus Magnus College
The Dominican Sisters of Saint Mary of the Springs founded Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1925. Originally founded as a residential college for women, today it is a co-educational institution of higher learning. The college now offers over thirty undergraduate and three graduate degrees, and has incorporated a variety of innovative programs to assist adult learners. The strong emphasis on the liberal arts remains, as do the Dominican traditions of scholarly inquiry, contemplation and the search for truth. The College's ultimate goal is to give its students the education that will enable them after their college years to lead productive and gratifying lives, both professionally and personally. It seeks a combination of learning that is scholarly and humanistically enlarging with intellectual preparation that is practical in its application. Albertus Magnus College remains faithful to the Judeo-Christian tradition and to its Catholic heritage, aware of and ready to respond to the evolving needs of its own students and of society at large.

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: 03/15/02) The boys soccer team entered the gym at Albertus Magnus, spilling water on the floor before a volleyball match, leaving it for an unsuspecting Megan Wettje. Wettje slipped in the water and twisted her knee, the knee that had troubled her since she dislocated her kneecap back in her freshman year of school. But the injury didn't stop her from playing that day. The senior hobbled around the court, and helped the Falcons pick up a win over the then-undefeated team from Tappan Zee during her last home match.

THE MONASTERY LINK Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. (NewT:Acts 20:28) Perfecting the world and the soul was the true alchemist's mission. Even as early as 300 AD, we find this to be a driving force. Here is an excerpt from a letter Zosimos the Wise wrote his former sweetheart, Theosobeia of Constantinople:
"He who will devote himself to the great work must be free from selfishness and greed and filled with piety and goodwill. He must know the true times of the planets, the magic formulae and processes, and the magic substances. Fruitless are all efforts of the unlearned and the deceitful, who strive not after knowledge but after goldafter the curing of the incurable malady of poverty, a curing which they might have attained by other means, as by marrying a rich wife with a great dowry." ( The Goldmakers , page 29.)
External Link: Allegories of Zosimos of Panoplis Is it any wonder then that many alchemists were monks? A true alchemist was working towards the salvation of the natural world. Many worked from scrolls captured during the Crusades. What better laboratory than a monastery, safe from the greedy intentions of profane? Though there were alchemists in almost every Holy Order, I ( Amanda Doerr ) will just deal with the two most influential, the Dominicans and Franciscans.

by Arthur Edward Waite
Albert , joined to a laudable curiosity in so great a philosopher, say the original "Lives of Alchemysticall Philosophers," did not allow him to pass by the Hermetic science without giving it due attention. opera omnia , there is no trace of sorcery. In one place he declares formally that "all those stories of demons prowling in the regions of the air, and from whom the secrets of futurity may be ascertained, are absurdities which can never be admitted by sober reason." The works on incredible secrets, so numerously attributed to him, are, therefore, condemned as spurious, Albertus Magnus having no more hand in their production than in the invention of the cannon and the pistol, which has been attributed to him by Matthias de Luna. So early, however, as the year 1480 the Great Chronicle of Belgium records him magnus in magia, major in philosophia, maximus in theologia . It is futile for the historians of his order to argue that Albert never applied himself to the Hermetic art, says an anonymous writer. His books alone those which are his incontestably bear witness to his alchemical erudition, and as a physician he carefully examined what regards Natural History, and above all the minerals and metals. His singular experiments are recorded in the Secretum Secretorum , which first appeared at Venice in 1508.
