Saint Albertus Magnus, 1204? - 1280
Saint Albertus Magnus was a Roman Catholic saint, scientist, philosopher, and theologian. He was known as "Albert the Great" and " Doctor Universalis " (Universal Doctor) in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge. He was proficient in every branch of learning cultivated in his day and surpassed all his contemporaries, except perhaps Roger Bacon , in the knowledge of nature. In general, the New England Transcendentalists were not exactly pleased with Catholicism. Indeed, many Transcendentalists, such as Convers Francis , condemned the evils of what they called "Popery." Then, too, conditions were not helped by the negative reaction of most Transcendentalists to Orestes Brownson 's disdainfully leaving their group, in the 1840s, and joining the Catholics instead. Yet, one of the all-abiding strengths of Transcendentalism, and in fact perhaps the major reason why Transcendentalism is no 'ism', is that it possesses no systematic doctrine from the standpoint of which it can exclude any reasonable point of view. That is to say, Transcendentalism even out-freethinks the freethinkers by freely admitting almost any thought without being limited to so-called freethought alone. Rather, it is the feeling, motivation, context, and spirit of the thoughtmore so than the thought itselfthat ultimately matter to Transcendentalism. In this manner, and for this reason, Transcendentalists such as Theodore Parker could express admiration for men like Albertus Magnus and

Albert (or Albertus) After joining the Dominican Order, he studied and taught at Padua, Bologna, Cologne and other German convents in Hildesheim, Freiburg, Ratisbon, Strasburg, and Cologne. He was sent to the Dominican convent of Saint-Jacques at the University of Paris in about 1241 where he read the new translations, with commentaries, of the Arabic and Greek texts of Aristotle . This was a period when the writings of Arabic scholars, and through them the texts of ancient Greek philosophers, was becoming known throughout Christian Europe and it was having to come to terms with this new knowledge. Albertus would play a major role in accepting this new learning into Europe with his wide ranging scholarship over essentially the whole of knowledge. He taught for four years at Saint-Jacques, giving courses on the Bible and on the theological textbook

A German Dominican, who was canonized as Saint Albert the Great. He was both a student and teacher of alchemy and chemistry, and an alleged magician , since he was repeatedly charged by some of his unfriendly contemporaries with holding communications with the devil , practicing the craft of magic , and with the making of a demonic automata able to speak. He was one of the alchemists reputed to have succeeded in discovering the Philosopher's Stone . After a alleged encounter with the blessed Virgin, Albertus stared espousing holy orders, and eventually won eminence in the clerical profession, being made Bishop of Ratisbon. Albertus was born at Larvingen, on the Danube, sometime between 1193 and 1206, and the term Magnus is not the result of his reputation, but is the Latin equivalent of his family name, de Groot. According to tradition, he was the inventor of the pistol and the cannon, but, while is unlikely that the credit is due to him for this, the mere fact that he was thus acknowledged indicates that his scientific skill was recognized by a few, if only a few, of the men of his own time. He died at Cologne, the exact date being unknown (some say 1280).

A life which combines religious perfection with the study of Wisdom has a marvelous power of arousing and lifting up the hearts of the faithful.
Christendom in the thirteenth century was by no means a secure and static civilization. Socially, materially and intellectually too, it was on the march. The Church, as ever, was changing with the times. The mendicant orders, whether Dominican or Franciscan or Carmelite, opened up a new kind of priestly vocation: for these friars were bound neither to a parish like the secular clergy, nor to a monastery like monks, but were rather free to study and preach. The friars soon earned key positions in the universities - the university arising as a rather novel Catholic Idea and Sacred Place for learning as well - which became the chief means by which the clergy were educated. The multiscienced fabric of the university, remembering that the Latin words "Catholica" and "Universitas" unite into fully convertible terms, marvelously manifested the ethereal robes of Faith and science - weaved in a celestial dreamcoat of natural and spiritual splendor. Albertus Magnus, Saint (circa 1200-80) Albertus Magnus, Saint (circa 1200-80), called Albert the Great and known as doctor universalis for his wide interest in natural science. He was especially noted for his introduction of Greek and Arabic science and philosophy to the medieval world. Born in Lauingen, Bavaria, to a noble military family, Albert was studying at Padua in 1223, when he was attracted to the Dominican Order of Preachers, then less than ten years old. He was ordained in Germany and taught there before going on to the University of Paris, where he became a master of theology in 1245 and subsequently held one of the Dominican chairs of theology. Among his early students was Thomas Aquinas. Albert was an influential teacher, church administrator, and preacher. He traveled through western Europe on behalf of his order and served as a provincial and, briefly, as bishop of Regensburg (1260-62) before returning to teaching and research. Albert was a key figure in the assimilation of Aristotelian philosophy into medieval Scholasticism and in the revival of natural science that it inspired. Early in the 13th century, a body of philosophical and scientific writings previously unknown to Western philosophers and theologians became a disturbing force in Scholastic circles. These Latin writings, based on Arabic translations of the works of Aristotle, were accompanied by the writings of Arab commentators, notably Avicenna and Averroës. As such, they presented a point of view foreign to the church-trained Scholastics, whose knowledge of Aristotle was confined to his logic, as taught and interpreted for centuries by the church, in the tradition of St. Augustine and the Neoplatonists.

Fresco (1352), Treviso, Italy Albertus Magnus , also known as Saint Albert the Great and Albert of Cologne , was a Dominican The Dominican Order, (its formal name, the Order of Preachers, is less common in English; a member is referred as a blackfriar ) founded by Saint Dominic in the early 13th century, is one of the great orders of mendicant friars that revolutionized religious life in Europe during the high middle ages. Like his contemporary Francis of Assisi, Dominic saw the need for a new type of organization to address the needs of his time, and the quick growth of the Dominicans and Franciscans during their first century confirms that the orders of mendicant friars met a felt need.
