Ebu Abullah El-Batani (Albategnius)
(858-929 e.r.)
nga: Dr. A. Zahur
El-Batani, i njohur ne perendim si Albategnius ishte nje astronom dhe matematicien i famshem. Ai u njoh si astronomi me i madh i kohes se tij dhe nje nga me te medhenjte e Mesjetes. El-Batani i mori mesimet e para nga i ati, Xhabir Ibn Sinan el Batani, i cili ishte gjithashtu nje shkencetar i njohur.

Al-Battani (Albategnius): Mathematician And Astronomer By David Tschanz Abu Abdallah Muhammad Ibn Jabir Ibn Sinan Al-Battani Al-Harrani, known in the West as Albategnius, is considered the greatest astronomer of his time and one of the greatest during the Middle Ages.
Al-Battani was born around 858 C.E. in Battan, a state of Harran, and was first educated by his father Jabir Ibn San'an Al-Battani, a well-known scientist. He then moved to Ar-Raqqa, situated on the bank of the Euphrates in Syria, where he received advanced education and began his career as a scholar.
The Fihrist (Index), compiled by the bookseller Ibn An-Nadim in 988, gives a full account of the Arabic literature available in the 10th century and briefly describes some of its authors. It depicts Al-Battani as:

Al-Battani is sometimes known by a latinised version of his name, variants being Albategnius, Albategni or Albatenius. His full name was Abu Abdallah Mohammad ibn Jabir ibn Sinan al-Raqqi al-Harrani al-Sabi al-Battani. Al-Battani was born in Harran, called Carrhae in earlier times by the Romans, which lies on the Balikh River, 38 km southeast of Urfa. His family had been members of the Sabian sect, a religious sect of star worshippers from Harran. Being worshipers of the stars meant that the Sabians had a strong motivation for the study of astronomy and they produced many outstanding astronomers and mathematicians such as Thabit ibn Qurra. In fact Thabit was also born in Harran and would have still have been living there at the time that al-Battani was born. Al-Battani, unlike Thabit , was not a believer in the Sabian religion, however, for "Abu Allah Mohammad" indicates that he was certainly a Muslim.

When I started observing sometime between 6:00 and 7:00 p.m. the floor
of Albategnius [Rukl 44] was all in shadow. There were two small white
specs showing. One was the central peak and the other was a high point
on the east wall of Klein.
I was observing through a mackerel sky. As the night went on the clouds
became thicker, then a clear area would come over and I could observe
again. So, I was in and out of the house waiting for sucker holes.
Each time I went out, Albategnius was different. Klein's wall slowly
emerged from the shadow. By midnight much of the floor was illuminated and long pointed shadows pointed inwards from the peaks on the rim. Albategnius B was apparent, though its floor was dark. It was fun to watch the light slowly spill into Albategnius.

Al-Batani
Al-Batani , also know as Albategnius (circa ), was an Arab prince and astronomer . His full name is Abu Abdallah Mohammad ibn Jabir ibn Sinan al-Raqqi al-Harrani al-Sabi al-Battani , hence the usual shortening. His name derives from his native town, Batan in Mesopotamia From his observations at Aracte and Damascus , where he died, he was able to correct some of Ptolemy 's results, previously taken on trust. He compiled new tables of the Sun and Moon , long accepted as authoritative, discovered the movement of the Sun's apogee , and assigned to annual precession the improved value of 55". Perhaps independently of Aryabhatta (born at Pataliputra on the Ganges in AD), he introduced the use of sines in calculation, and partially that of tangents. His principal work, De Motu Stellarum , was published at Nuremberg in by Melanchthon , in a blundering Latin translation by Plato Tiburtinus, annotated by Regiomontanus . A reprint appeared at Bologna in . The original manuscript is preserved at the Vatican ; and the Escorial Library possesses in manuscript a treatise of some value by him on astronomical chronology.
