Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity George Biddell Airy ( ), an astronomer royal, was influenced in childhood by his educated uncle Arthur Biddell, whose library probably introduced Airy to the sciences. With support from his uncle - and his own hard work (he was a sizar - a student who works as a servant in order to qualify for reduced fees), he was able to attend Trinity College, Cambridge, from which he graduated with the top first class degree. Airy had a long-running feud with Charles Babbage ( ) during his career, over a chair which Airy won at Babbage's expense. Their bickering led to a number of controversies - not always linked to science, in which the two opposed each other. While Airy usually won these disputes, it is far from clear that he was usually right. Airy was an authoritarian astronomer royal, and though he was clearly talented, some have suggested his principal gift was making others work - "Airy was not a great scientist, but he made great science possible." During his tenure, no young astronomers were trained at the observatory, because he could not tolerate opinions diverging from his own. His personal contributions to the science were relatively minor - mostly accurate data and corrections of the work of previous scientists - most famously Jean-Baptiste Delambre's ( ) work on the relative motion of Venus and the Earth.

    Airy, George Biddell (1801-1892)
was a British astronomer who, as Astronomer Royal for 46 years, was responsible for greatly simplifying the systematization of astronomical observations and for expanding and improving the Royal Observatory at Greenwich.
Airy was born in Alnwick, Northumberland, on 27 July 1801. His father, a collector of taxes and excise duties, was periodically transferred from one part of the country to another, with the result that his son was educated in a number of places. From 1814 to 1819 he attended Colchester Grammar School, where he was noted for his incredible memory (on one occasion he recited from memory 2,394 lines of Latin ver...

Emily Winterburn introduces George Airy, Astronomer Royal and chief rulemaker at the Royal Observatory. Page 1 of 6 1. Airy's advances 2. New transit instrument 3. Chronograph 4. Innovations ... Print entire article Airy's advances George Biddell Airy was Astronomer Royal at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich from 1835 to 1881. In his time, Airy transformed the observatory, installing some of the most advanced astronomical apparatus of his day and expanding both staff numbers and their workload. Staff had to clock-in and clock-out - common practice in Victorian factories and he also introduced new methods for dealing with the larger scale of the organisation. Further steps to automate systems and the production of strict step-by-step guidelines, all helped to reduce human error and increase efficiency. A transit instrument is always lined up with a north-south line, or meridian. When a star passes over the meridian, the transit instrument can be used to measure the angle at which this happens. Whilst this happens, an extremely accurate clock, called a regulator, is used to measure the time it occurs. These two measurements give the co-ordinates of that star, which can be used to make a star chart - and star position tables to aid navigation. The production of these tables, published annually to this day in the Nautical Almanac, was fundamental to the founding duty of the Observatory, which was to improve navigation.
