Howard Aiken
Howard Aiken is considered one of the pioneers of the computer field, being the primary engineer behind IBM's Harvard Mark I computer. He was born on March 9 in Hoboken, New Jersey and passed away on March 14 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied at the University of Wisconsin, Madison , and later obtained his PhD in physics at Harvard University in . During this time he encountered differential equations that he could only solve numerically. As such, he envisioned an electro-mechanical computing device that could do much of the tedious work for him. This computer was originally called the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC) and later renamed Harvard Mark I . With help from Grace Hopper and funding from IBM the machine was completed in . In , Aiken completed his work on the fully electronic Mark II computer. He is also well known for his comment, "Only six electronic digital computers would be required to satisfy the computing needs of the entire United States." Books about 'Howard Aiken' at: amazon.com

The IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator
Also called the Harvard Mark I. It was built in 1940-43 and remained operational until 1959. The IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator after installation at Harvard University, 1944. It is 51 feet long, weighs 5 tons, and incorporates 750,000 parts, including 72 accumulators and 60 sets of rotary switches, each of which can be used as a constant register, plus card readers, a card punch, paper tape readers, and typewriters. Sequencing is controlled by a long rotating shaft. An addition takes 1/3 second, and a multiplication, 1 second. The dial switches are at the left, followed by the bays of storage counters. Partially obscured by the observers are the multiplying-dividing unit and the counters used in computing logarithmic and trigonometric functions. At the right are paper-tape units, typewriters, and card punch [ The near-complete "Harvard machine" in IBM's North Street Laboratory, prior to delivery, November 1943 [ A 1945 Columbia University news release [ ] cites "cooperation with Harvard University in the development of the ASCC". Perhaps it overstates the case, but the claim is bolstered by a report in Brennan [

Howard Hathaway Aiken
The Life of a Computer Pioneer
by Gregory W. Welch On August 14, 1944, Thomas J. Watson, president of the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), publicly presented Harvard University with the IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (ASCC). Top brass from IBM, Harvard, and the US. Navy addressed the assembled press corps. Six-page, glossy brochures describing the machine and its development were distributed. It was a grand occasion. The ASCC represented a tremendous advance for science and industry. It was the result of a long, cooperative effort between IBM and Harvard, and was already proving its worth: the Navy was using the calculator in connection with World War II. The public announcement of this engineering feat heralded what is now termed the "Information Age." Press reports sparked the public's imagination to consider a world full of automatic machines performing tasks formerly delegated to man. Despite the many people involved with and affected by the ceremony, the moment belonged, more than to anyone else, to one man. The Harvard Mark I, as the machine was commonly known, was the brainchild of 44-year-old Harvard physicist, Howard Hathaway Aiken. Aiken had given birth to the project eight years before while working on his Harvard Ph.D. thesis. He and many of his colleagues were confounded by mathematical problems which required an immense amount of calculations. The idea of a machine which would perform vast calculations automatically was appealing to them. Consequently Aiken embarked on the design of such a machine. Although the ASCC had been operating around-the-clock for several months for the Navy in connection with the war effort, the August 14th ceremony officially recognized the fruition of his effort.

Report on Howard Aiken
The Creator of the ASCC Howard Aiken was the original founder of the ASCC computer, Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator. It carried out five operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and references to previous results. He developed this type of computer with IBM engineers. He was a doctorate at Harvard University 1939. When he became an instructor in the Department of Physics in Harvard he was beginning to get the idea to build a large computer. The ASCC was powered by electricity and weighed 35 tons. To connect everything Howard and the IBM engineers had to use 500 miles of wire and could compute 23 figures. The ASCC had 72 storage units to do all its functions. All the functions took much longer than they do today. Single addition took about 6 seconds while division took 12 seconds. These operations would take only about less than a second or even a second at the most today. Also the computer was controlled by a series of punch cards. The ASCC was completed at the IBM laboratories in 1943, it was moved to Harvard in 1944 and was used. The ASCC was later named the Harvard Mark 1. Howard Aiken completed the Harvard Mark 2 which was completely electronic, in 1947. He continued working on more computers like the Harvard Mark 3 and 4 until 1952. He worked on computer theories as well as working on computers.

They can point the pen tip to any word on a page and hear it pronounced, or touch a picture and hear a sound effect (such as ''Strike one!'' for the baseball bat). Very similar to the popular Living Books computer games, this 10-by-11-inch book is more portable than a home computer. Stories in this set include Lil's Loose Tooth, Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever, and Winnie the Pooh in A Sweet Good Morning.
