Ahmes
Ahmes was an Egytian priest who lived sometime before 1700 B.C. A surviving work of Ahmes is part of the Rhind Papyrus now located in the British Museum(Newman, 1956). The work is titled 'directions for knowing all dark things' and is a collection of problems in geometry and arithmetic. The problems are presented with solutions, but often with no hint as to how the solution was obtained. Ahmes states without proof that a circular field with a diameter of 9 units is equal in area to a square with sides of 8 units(Beckman, 1971). In modern notation: which leads to a value of Pi equal to 3.16049...

Its scope is all the canvas of the history of numbers in mathematics. But its treatment sometimes leaves one wondering what the Dickens it is about. I expect that most of us owe our involvement in mathematics to reading popularizations in our youth. Certainly, many of us were turned on by the writings of Martin Gardner, George Gamow, Isaac Asimov, Lancelot Hogben, W. W. Rouse Ball , H. E. Dudeney and much of what is found in James R. Newman's World of Mathematics. These authors offered recreational wonders and challenges to the investigative mind: the more one toyed, the more one dug, the more wonders one found! So it appears to have been for Midhat Gazalé, who largely credits his latest offering, Number: from Ahmes to Cantor , to inspiration he received from Martin Gardner's many Scientific American columns and books, and to Tobias Dantzig's

Ahmes A'h-mose (more commonly referred to as Ahmes) was an Egyptian scribe who copied an earlier mathematics text on papyrus in 1650 B.C. Ahmes began his text with a table of fractions and an explanation of the Egyptian method of using fractions. The ancient Egyptians defined all fractions, with the single exception of the fraction 2/3, in terms of unit fractions. That is, they only used fractions with a numerator of one. For example, instead of writing 3/4, they wrote 1/2 + 1/4. Instead of writing 5/6, they wrote 1/2 + 1/3. Egyptian Fractions Problem Write each fraction in terms of unit fractions only.

Learning Ahmes Nefertari (Ahmose Nofertari) There are several very important female members of the royal family at the beginning of the 18th Dynasty appearing on many contemporary and later monuments, suggesting that they played some political role in their time. The most important of these is Ahmose Nefertari, the daughter of king Seqenenre , and his wife Ahhotep, the mother of king Amenhotep I . She was the wife of Ahmose , who was responsible for the defeat of the Hyksos. On monuments she is mentioned as 'king's daughter, king's sister, king's great wife, God's wife of Amun and mistress of Upper and Lower Egypt'. In later inscriptions she also appears with the title king's mother. The title god's wife is her most important, and even in contemporary inscriptions people refer to her as god's wife (and not as king's wife or king's mother). Together with Amenhotep I, Ahmose Nefertari was worshipped as deity in Thebes after her death.

Ahmose (II) (Amasis) Khnemibre
(570-526 BC) King of the 26th Dynasty. The reign of the king marks the high point of the 26th Dynasty in terms of wealth and prosperity. Under Ahmose (II) Naukratis , the Greek colony in Egypt was formally founded: the city became the main trading point between Egyptians and Greeks. Herodotus and Egyptian sources relate that the king was a drinker and philanderer: this may, though, be a literary motif rather than an accurate record. Horus name: Semenmaat
