The Ahmes Papyrus
The Ahmes was written in hieratic, and probably originated from the Middle Kingdom: 2000-1800 BC. It claims to be a ``thorough study of all things, insight into all that exists, knowledge of all obscure secrets." In fact, it is somewhat less. It is a collection of exercises, substantially rhetorical in form, designed primarily for students of mathematics. Included are exercises in

The practical mathematical tools for construction?
To illustrate the level and scope of Egyptian mathematics of this period, we select several of the problems and their solutions as found in the two papryi. For example, beer and bread problems are common in the Ahmes. Problem 72. How many loaves of "strength" 45 are equivalent to 100 loaves of strength 10? Fact: strength := Invoking the rule of three , which was well known in the ancient world, we must solve the problem:

Ahmes is the scribe who wrote the Rhind Papyrus (named after the Scottish Egyptologist Alexander Henry Rhind who went to Thebes for health reasons, became interested in excavating and purchased the papyrus in Egypt in 1858). Ahmes claims not to be the author of the work, being, he claims, only a scribe. He says that the material comes from an earlier work of about 2000 BC. The papyrus is our chief source of information on Egyptian mathematics. The Recto contains division of 2 by the odd numbers 3 to 101 in unit fractions and the numbers 1 to 9 by 10. The Verso has 87 problems on the four operations, solution of equations, progressions, volumes of granaries, the two-thirds rule etc. The Rhind Papyrus, which came to the British Museum in 1863, is sometimes called the 'Ahmes papyrus' in honour of Ahmes. Nothing is known of Ahmes other than his own comments in the papyrus.

Ahmes Ahmes By David Muraskin Ahmes was a scribe in Ancient Egypt who lived from approximately 1680 BCE to 1620 BCE. He is remembered solely for the Rhind Papyrus (ca. 1650 BCE), which he copied from a document originally dating from 2000 BCE. This Papyrus contains two tables of calculations (one of the tables is comparable to a modern day multiplication table and the other is series of fractions) on one side, and a series of problems based around various operations on the other. It is the tables, which have proven the main focus of interest for modern day mathematicians. However, before the mathematics is discussed one must have a proper understanding of the age in which the tables were created and also the time in which Ahmes lived. The tables were originally created during a time of great instability in Ancient Egypt. Egypt's farming economy was dependent on the flooding of the Nile. When the Nile did not flood to the proper heights for years on end, the ruling family lost their hold over the nation and upper and lower Egypt split creating what is known as the First Intermediate Period (2181-2050 BCE). This period was finally brought to an end by Mentuhotep II who "reunited" Egypt. It is during this first part of Mentuotep's regain that the tables, which appear on the Rhind Papyrus, were to have been originally crafted. Ahmes lived in a very similar time. The Nile was once again flooding poorly and this left the Egyptian ruling class weak and open to invasion. The "Semites from the Syria-Palestine region" saw their opportunity and attempted to take control. They planted settlers among the Egyptians who brought over many cultural items including the olive. This inter-cultural contact led to an expansion in the Egyptian trading patterns bringing back some of the previous prosperity.

Written by the scribe Ahmes or Ah'mose the egyptian manuscript is currently in the permanent collection of the British Museum, apart from a few small fragments held by Brooklyn Museum in New York. The museum is home to some six million objects covering the story of human culture from its first beginning to the present day. Many of the artefacts are stored underneath the museum, due to lack of space. The museum opened to the public on January 15, 1759.

Every citizen had to work for the state for a few weeks a year (Kemp 2000:129). Egyptians naturally assumed that such a system had to exist in the kingdom of the dead.

Ahmes ægypter , antages at have levet mellem år 2000 og 1700 f.Kr.
