Fields Medal
Historical Introduction
This is the original letter by Fields creating the endowment for the medals that bear his name. It is thought to have been written during the few months before his death. Notice that no mention is made about the age of the recipients (currently there is a 40 year-old limit), and that the medal should not be attached to any person, private or public, meaning that it shouldn't bear anybody's name. It is proposed to found two gold medals to be awarded at successive International Mathematical Congress for outstanding achievements in mathematics. Because of the multiplicity of the branches of mathematics and taking into account the fact that the interval between such congresses is four years it is felt that at least two medals should be available. The awards would be open to the whole world and would be made by an International Committee. The fund for the founding of the medals is constituted by balance left over after financing the Toronto congress held in 1924. This must be held in trust by the Government or by some body authorized by government to hold and invest such funds. It would seem that a dignified method for handling the matter and one which in this changing world should most nearly secure permanency would be for the Canadian Government to take over the fund and appoint as his custodian say the Prime Minister of the Dominion or the Prime Minister in association with the Minister of Finance. The medals would be struck at the Mint in Ottawa and the duty of the custodian would be simply to hand over the medals at the proper time to the accredited International Committee.

Ahlfors Five Island Theorem Let f z ) be a transcendental meromorphic function , and let be five simply connected domains in with disjoint closures (Ahlfors 1932). This is a list of Mathematics and Statistics collected works that can be found at Dalhousie University and at other Halifax universities. The vast majority of these works are located in the Killam Library on the Dalhousie campus. A guide to other locations is given at the end of this list. If a title is owned by both Dalhousie and another university, only the Dalhousie site is listed. For all locations, and for full bibliographic details, see the NOVANET library catalogue This list was compiled, and the collection is being enlarged, with the invaluable help of the Bibliography of Collected Works maintained by the Cornell University Mathematics Library. The thumbnail sketches of mathematicians were taken from the MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive at the University of St. Andrews. Lars Ahlfors
Lars Valerian Ahlfors April 18 October 11 ) was a Finnish mathematician , remembered for his work in the field of Riemann surface s and his text on complex analysis He was born in Helsinki , the son of a Professor of Engineering. He studied at Helsinki University from 1924, graduating in 1928 having studied under Ernst Lindel¶f and Rolf Nevanlinna. He assisted Nevanlinna in 1929 with his work on Denjoy's conjecture on the number of asymptotic values of an entire function. Ahlfors was appointed lecturer in mathematics at the University of Turku. He completed his doctorate in 1930. In 1935 he went to Harvard University and in 1936 he was one of the first to be awarded the Fields Medal . He returned to Finland in 1938 to take up a post at the University of Helsinki, but the outbreak of war led to problems although Ahlfors was unfit for military service. He was offered a post at the Federal Polytechnic Institute at Zurich in 1944 and finally managed to travel there in March 1945. He did not enjoy his time in Switzerland and jumped at a chance to leave, returning to work at Harvard where he remained until he retired in 1977; he was William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics from 1964. He was awarded the Vihuri Prize in 1968 and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics in 1981. His book Complex Analysis ) is still the standard text for most courses on the topic. Stony Brook, November 6-8 1998
    BRIEF HISTORY

The mathematical works of Lars Ahlfors and Lipman Bers are fundamental and lasting. They have influenced and altered the development of twentieth century mathematics. The personalities of these two scientists helped create a mathematical family and have had a permanent positive effect on a whole generation of mathematicians. Their mathematical heritage continues to lead succeeding generations. In October 1995 a series of conferences to be held triannually, was inaugurated at the Graduate Center of CUNY under the name The Bers Colloquium. The theme was to be a topic in the Ahlfors-Bers mathematical tradition, broadly interpreted. The theme of that meeting was The legacy of Lipman Bers . Talks were presented by Clifford Earle, Peter Jones, Curt McMullen, Dan Mostow, Louis Nirenberg, and Dennis Sullivan. One year later, after the death of Lars Ahlfors, it was decided to change the name of the series to The Ahlfors-Bers Colloquium.

A conference celebrating the life and work of Lars Ahlfors will be held at Stanford University, September 19-21,1997. Ahlfors, who would have been 90 this year, died late last fall. The goal of this conference is to explore various lines that are currently active areas of research where he made major - and often seminal - contributions. The program will include talks by the following speakers:
    Gerald Alexanderson, Santa Clara University
    Kari Astala, University of Jyvaskala
    Raoul Bott, Harvard University
    James Cannon, Brigham Young University
Phillip Griffiths, Institute for Advanced Study
    Peter Jones, Yale University
    Linda Keen, CUNY
Robert Osserman, Stanford University and MSRI
    Dennis Sullivan, CUNY and SUNY
    Paul Vojta, UC Berkeley
Michael Wolf, Rice University This conference is sponsored by the American Institute of Mathematics in conjunction with MSRI and Stanford University. We will be able to provide financial support to a limited number of students who wish to attend. To apply for funding, send a letter explaining your interest in attending, together with a letter from a faculty advisor, to the address below. For information on accommodations and other matters related to the conference, please contact Willene Perez at the Department of Mathematics, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 94305
