82. No. 1741: The Witch Of Agnesi

No. 1741:
THE WITCH OF AGNESI by John H. Lienhard Click here for audio of Episode 1741. Today, we meet the Witch of Agnesi. The University of Houston's College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them. I have this neat old book on analytical geometry. The solution to one of its problems is a singularly gentle and graceful curve. It's called The Witch of Agnesi . But why? There's nothing sinister about this flowing line. It turns out that one person who worked with this curve was a noted eighteenth-century Italian mathematician named Maria Agnesi. So, problem solved: she was the Witch. Well, wait a minute. Let's meet the woman herself. Maria Agnesi was born in Milan in 1718. Her father was a gentleman intellectual. She was a child prodigy and the apple of his eye. Yet Maria was shy and retiring, and, when she was twenty, her mother died, leaving the household in her care. She wanted to become a nun, but her father wouldn't hear of that. So they struck a deal. She would stay at home if she could attend church whenever she chose, dress simply, and avoid secular socializing. In that same year she published her first book a set of 191 well-organized philosophical propositions, what we would call a physics text. She defended it (as one might a thesis) in an open meeting. One observer said, "She spoke like an angel."

History
Studied by Maria Gaetana Agnesi (1718-1799) in 1748. Also studied by Fermat (1666), and Guido Grandi (1703). The name of this curve has a colorful history. Versaria is the name given by Grandi, meaning "turning in every direction". In the course of time the word versaria took on another meaning. The Latin words adversaria , and by aphaeresis, versaria , signify a female that is contrary to God. Thus gradually the curve versaria is understood in English as the Witch.
Description
Witch of Agnesi (Versiera) is defined as follows. Step by step description:
  • Draw a line passing the Origin and any point M on the circle. Let the intersection of this secant and line L be N. Witch of Agnesi is the locus of intersections of a horizontal line passing through M and a vertical line passing through N.

  • Tracing Witch of Agnesi (20 k)

    Formulas
    • Cartesian: y (x^2 + 4 a^2) == 8 a^3
    (a is the scaling factor. It is the radius of the circle the Witch is constructed on)

    History of Math

    Background: M aria Agnesi (pronounced on-yay-zee) was born on May 16, 1718 in Milan, Italy and died January 9, 1799. Maria's father, Pietro was a mathematics professor and came from a wealthy family. Maria was considered to be one of the greatest woman scholars and the very first female mathematician for modern times. This came at a time when Europeans didn't see the value of education women. Contributions:
    • Wrote and published the first comprehensive Calculus textbook.

    More Women in Math
    This week I have chosen to spotlight a woman who was not only brilliant mathematically, but a great humanitarian. First I would like to mention that another excellent source on women mathematicians is the book Women in Mathematics by Lynn M. Olsen. Second, since last week I have discovered that there is a computer server named hypatia.math . (Hurrah!) Now, let me introduce you to Maria Geatan Agnesi, the first woman math professor. Maria Geatan Agnesi was undoubtably unique among mathematicians. She lived her life in Milan, Italy, from 1718-1799. She had the fortune to be born into a society that found intelligent women attractive. She mastered many languages in her early childhood and at age nine published a Latin discourse describing the benefits of educating women. Her father was a professor in mathematics and the Agnesi home became a hub for intellectual activity. Despite her shy nature, Maria became actively involved in the discussions that ensued in her home. She was the oldest of 21 children and when her mother died she took on the responsibility of caring for the household. Even with this burden she continued her work in mathematics, though in a less public environment. In 1738 she published a collection of essays on philosophy and natural science entitled

    María Gaetana Agnesi
    Nacida el 16 de mayo de 1718 hija de un profesor matemático. A la edad de nueve años hablaba francés, latín, griego, hebreo y algunas otras lenguas. A esa edad escribió un discurso defendiendo la educación de las mujeres. En sus años de adolescencia debatía con hombres matemáticos sobre distintos temas: propagación de la luz, cuerpos transparentes y figuras curvilíneas en geometría. A la edad de 20 años quiso entrar en un convento; pero su padre se denegó. María nunca se casó. Ella dedicó su vida al estudio de las matemáticas y a cuidar a sus 20 hermanos en el momento en que murió su madre. Desde los 20 años trabajó en su trabajo más importante: Instituciones Analíticas , basado en cálculo diferencial e integral y publicado en 1748. Este libro fue traducido al francés y al inglés. Una de las partes más importantes de este libro fue: la curva de plano cúbico con la ecuación cartesiana Cuando este libro fue traducido al inglés por John Colson, profesor de matemáticas de Cambridge, éste le dió el nombre de "bruja" a la curva estudiada por Agnesi debido a una mala traducción y de ahi cada vez que se iba a mencionar a Agnesi se referian a ella como la bruja de Agnesi Agnesi nunca pudo entrar a la Academia Francesa por ser mujer; pero si en las Academias Italianas por éstas ser mas liberales. Agnesi fue elegida por la Academia de las Ciencias de Bologna donde dedicaron su libro a la Emperatriz María Teresa. Después, fue reconocida por el Papa Benedicto XIV, quien estaba interesado en las matemáticas. Luego de la muerte de su padre, se dedicó a obras caritativas para mujeres enfermas. Murió el 9 de enero de 1799. En su primer centenario de muerta pusieron su nombre a varias calles en Milán, Monza y Masciago y se becaron mujeres en su nombre.
