The script is easy to guess: The puffed-up, powdered-wig figures of Gauss and Legendre squabble childishly over credit for a discovery that is actually made by a self-taught genius doing brilliant mathematics deep in the hinterland, scratching theorems onto birchbark with a bit of charcoal. If only it were true. Although Adrain's accomplishments are impressive for their time and place, they do not put him in the first rank of 19th-century mathematicians. Mathematics and other kinds of science are so intensely social that only the most extraordinary talent could overcome the handicap of isolation. It takes more than a village to raise a scientist. It takes a village full of scientists. As it happens, I am writing these words from just such a village: the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, in Trieste, Italy. The center is named for a distinguished scientist who had to choose in youth between his vocation (physics) and his nation (Pakistan). He went to Cambridge. The center he founded has among its explicit aims to spare others that bitter choice, providing scientists from developing countries opportunities for collaboration without forcing them into emigration. Some 80,000 have visited since 1964.

U NIVERSITY OF P ENNSYLVANIA Robert Adrain Professor of Mathematics Born in Carrickfergus, Ireland, 1775; emigrated to America on account of his connection with the Irish Rebellion of 1798; taught school in various places; Professor of Mathematics at Rutgers, Columbia, and the University of Pennsylvania, holding the position here 1827-34; edited Hutton's Mathematics; the periodical, Mathematical Diary and published essays in mathematical and physical subjects; received LL.D. from Columbia, 1818; died 1843. R OBERT ADRAIN, LL.D., was born in Carrickfergus, Ireland, September 30, 1775, and died in New Brunswick, New Jersey, August 10, 1843. He participated in the Irish rebellion of 1798, during which he received a severe wound, and was obliged to fly to America. He taught school in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and was a contributor to scientific journals. From 1809 to 1813 he was Professor of Mathematics in Queens College, now Rutgers College , and then resigned to accept the Chair of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at Columbia , where he continued until his resignation in 1825. He then returned to Rutgers College as Professor of Mathematics, remaining until 1827. In this year he accepted the Professorship of Mathematics in the University of Pennsylvania which he held until 1834 when he resigned. He edited Hutton's Mathematics, published essays on the figure and magnitude of the earth and on gravity, and was Editor of the Mathematical Diary from 1825 to 1829. He received the degree of Doctor of Laws from Columbia in 1818. He married Anna Pollock of New Jersey.

World History (home) Encyclopedia Index Localities Companies Surnames ... This Week in History Robert Adrain Robert Adrain September 30 August 10 ) was a scientist and mathematician. He was born in Carrickfergus Ireland , but left Ireland after the failure of the uprising of the United Irishmen in and moved to Princeton, New Jersey . He taught mathematics at various schools in the United States. He is chiefly remembered for his formulation of the method of least squares , published in 1808. Adrain certainly did not know of the work of C.F. Gauss on least squares (published 1809), although it is possible that he had read A.M. Legendre 's article on the topic (published 1804). Adrain, Gauss, and Legendre all motivated the method of least squares by the problem of reconciling disparate physical measurements; in the case of Gauss and Legendre, the measurements in question were astronomical, and in Adrain's case they were survey measurements.
