The names of Robert Adrain 's parents are unknown but we do know that his father was a schoolteacher and that he made mathematical instruments. When Adrain was about fifteen years of age both his parents died. Adrain received a good education but this education did not include any mathematics beyond arithmetic. His own curiosity, however, led him to study books on mathematics which explained algebraic notation and so he became essentially a self-taught mathematician. After his parents died, Adrain had to work to support both himself and his four brothers and sisters and it was entirely natural for this well educated young man to earn his living as a teacher. By 1798 Adrain, a young man of 22, had established himself sufficiently well financially to allow him to marry Ann Pollock. They had seven children, one of whom, Garnett Bowditch Adrain, became a Democratic member of Congress. The year 1798 was crucial for Adrain in addition to being the year in which he married. He took part in the Irish rebellion of that year but, in order to understand what this was about, we should give some background to explain the political events which led up to this event that was to result in a complete change in Adrain's life.

Robert Adrain September 30 August 10 ) was a scientist and mathematician He was born in Carrickfergus Ireland , but left Ireland after the failure of the uprising of the United Irishmen in and moved to Princeton, New Jersey . He taught mathematics at various schools in the United States He is chiefly remembered for his formulation of the method of least squares , published in 1808. Adrain certainly did not know of the work of C.F. Gauss on least squares (published 1809), although it is possible that he had read A.M. Legendre 's article on the topic (published 1804). Adrain, Gauss, and Legendre all motivated the method of least squares by the problem of reconciling disparate physical measurements; in the case of Gauss and Legendre, the measurements in question were astronomical, and in Adrain's case they were survey measurements. Robert Adrain (1775-1843) After Adrain came to the US from his native Ireland in 1798 (or 9), he settled first at Princeton, NJ, where he was appointed a master at Princeton Academy. He stayed there until 1800 when the family moved to York, PA. In York Adrain became Principal of York County Academy. The Mathematical Correspondent , an early American mathematics journal, began publishing in 1804 under the editorship of George Baron and Adrain became one of its main contributors. Baron had taught mathematics to a few soldiers at West Point before it was USMA, so that establishes a nice link. Need to look into this Baron connection more carefully. St. Andrew's web site has more detail and references. Manuscripts: These are the only two letters indexed under Adrain in The West Point Thayer Papers Compiled by V. Frederick Rickey, beginning November 2000.

B. Adrain published an account of the method—and also of the closely related bell-shaped curve we now know as the normal or Gaussian distribution—at roughly the same time as Carl Friedrich Gauss, but his contributions were little known because he spent his career in the United States, then a developing country isolated from European centers of learning. Robert Adrain
Robert Adrain , born in Carrickfergus Ireland , and died in New Brunswick New Jersey , was a scientist and mathematician He left Ireland after the failure of the uprising of the United Irishmen in 1798,and moved to Princeton, New Jersey .He taught mathematics at various schools in the United States He is chiefly remembered for his formulation of the method of least squares , published in 1808.
