    http://www-ah.st-andrews.ac.uk/mgstud/reflect/swan.html
    Chronometer c.1850
    Prescision navagational aid.
Made by Adams, maker to HRH Prince Albert, 36 Lombard Street, London. Number 3294. Brass mechanism in mahogany box with brass fittings. Base 17cm square, height 18cm. William Swan was Professor of Natural Philosophy in the United College of St. Andrews University from 1859 to 1880. In 1880 he compiled an extensive catalogue listing all the scientific equipment in the department, including the historic instruments. Swan's catalogue entries are meticulous, and also reveal a dry sense of humour: for example, he describes a wooden clock as, "ferociously coarse and useless." Some of the instruments he catalogued still exist today in the School of Physics and Astronomy, such as the armilliary sphere, Gregorian telescope and astrolabes. Swan's main passion was optics, especially spectroscopy. He is credited with inventing the `Swan Spectrometer', which is little known today, although Swan published numerous articles on the subject. He was awarded the Royal Scottish Society of Arts Gold Medal for his work in November 1843. As was the case with many Victorian gentlemen, Swan was interested in many diverse topics and not just his chosen speciality. From the comments in his catalogue, and his correspondence with other scientists, he appears to have been an inquisitive, witty and intelligent character, who was always keen to learn more.

John Couch Adams Day: 27 Sept 2003
Our chance to "shake hands" with one of Cornwall's three great astronomers.
An article by Brian Sheen, Frank Johns and Nick Tonkin JCA was a world famous Cornish Astronomer of the 19th cent, who was born at Laneast in North Cornwall. There are a number of sites of special JCA interest in the area, i.e. birth place, museum, Manganese mine, monument etc. The plan was to visit these sites and get the background and history of the man, as well as enjoy a day out. In the evening there was a talk given to the residents of Laneast, in the school room where JCA was educated. This was followed by a mass viewing of the Planet Neptune using a couple of club members scopes.
    The Off
The morning started with the bad news that Andy has stuffed his leg playing football the day before and that we would be one member down before we even started. After a little juggling, we managed to squeeze all of Brians equipment into the already packed ‘Jeep’ of Nick’s. Sandy kindly helped out by giving Alan a lift and our three car trio was made complete by Cathy Tucker. The drive to Launceston (or Lanson as it would have been spelt) was uneventful and our small convoy met up with Frank and Marion Johns, and Henry Goulden outside of the Lawrence House Museum. We were met by Jake Jackson and Jean Brown, the museum’s archivist and curator and were escorted to one of their display rooms especially set up to educate their visitors about J.C.A.

    72. The Bodmin Moor Pages - John Couch Adams
In England john couch adams, a young Cambridge mathematician who, like john Herschel, had passed through his mathematical training with flying colours, had
    http://www.bodminmoor.co.uk/adams.html
Since William Herschel's discovery of Uranus in 1781 the planet's orbit had been observed to differ from the one calculated according to Newton's principle of universal gravitation. There could be only one of two explanations, either Newton's laws were wrong, or there was another planet even further away from the Sun than Uranus which was attracting it and so causing the orbital disturbances. Confidence in Newton's laws was very strong, indeed any idea that they were incorrect would have had almost frightening implications, yet while there was obviously the possibility of the existence of another planet, the problem of working out details about it was of such complexity that mathematicians shrank from the task and some were even of the opinion that it was insoluble. Matters came to a head in I846 from two different quarters. For a time there were rival claims about priority of discovery, and it was even suggested by some partisans that Adams had been conjured up by the Astronomer Royal and primed to claim something he had never done. However John Herschel was able to lend his authority and international reputation to help calm what might have become an unfortunate scientific contretemps, so that posterity has been able to give due credit both to Adams and Leverrier, at least on the English side of the Channel. The actual effect of the discovery was astounding. To the popular imagination and to the scientific as well, the discovery of a totally unknown and unsuspected planet by dint of nothing more nor less than years of laborious calculation seemed almost miraculous, and showed forcibly to everyone the power of the new science which had been growing steadily since the Renaissance. In addition it was a glorious vindication of Newton's law of universal gravitation.
