23. The Eagle 1997 - John Couch Adams And The Discovery Of Neptune
The History of its discovery.
http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/publications/eagle97/Eagle97-John.html
John Couch Adams and the discovery of Neptune
Fifty years ago, in October 1946, I came up to John's wrestling with the problem of whether to read Natural Sciences or Mathematics. I was much attracted by Mathematics which offered Astronomy as an option in the final year, and unfortunately at that time it was possible to do only half-subject Mathematics in Natural Sciences Part I. In the event, however, I decided on Natural Sciences, more particularly Physics in Part II. On the first day of the Michaelmas Term 1946 a lecture was given by the Astronomer Royal, Sir Harold Spencer Jones, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Discovery of Neptune. Since John Couch Adams, the British astronomer involved in the discovery, was a Johnian, I decided to have a look at his papers in the College Library and write an account of what happened to mark the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the discovery. John Adams was born in 1819 in Cornwall, of farming stock, and from an early age confounded his family and teachers with his mathematical ability. He earned a place at St John's and was awarded a Scholarship. At the end of his undergraduate studies in 1843 he was Senior Wrangler, with more than twice the marks of the Second Wrangler. Despite this success he was always modest, retiring and self-effacing, but always sincere and ready to help people. He had become interested in the problem of Uranus in 1841 when he read a report on Astronomy by the Astronomer Royal Sir George Airy. The five planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn had been observed for centuries, distinguished from stars because they moved relatively to the stars from night to night. Through a telescope each planet was seen as a small disc, whereas a star was a point. Johannes Kepler had shown that each planet orbited the Sun in an ellipse - one of his laws - and Sir Isaac Newton explained these laws by the Inverse Square Law of Gravitation (doubling the distance between two bodies divides by four the gravitational force of attraction).

John Couch Adams showed great mathematical ability while at school, and he became known for his considerable abilities for accurate numerical calculations. During this period he first became interested in astronomy and, by the age of 16, he had worked out when an annular eclipse of the Sun would be visible in Lidcot. His brother lived at Lidcot, which is near Launceston about 10Km from where John was born. Adams was educated at St John's College, Cambridge. He began his undergraduate course in October 1839 and graduated Senior Wrangler four years later. He is said to have been awarded double the marks of the Second Wrangler which, if true, is an incredible achievement. Also in 1843 he became first Smith's Prizeman and he became a Fellow of Pembroke College. He was to hold this Fellowship, in addition to other posts, until his death. In 1841, while still an undergraduate, he decided to investigate

John Couch Adams John Couch Adams turned down a knighthood. The honor was offered by Queen Victoria. She wanted to recognize Adams for his accomplishments. John Couch Adams was born in England in 1819. He was born to a farming family. When Adams was very young he showed a talent for doing math. He could do very difficult math problems in his head. Adams went to St. Johns College in Cambridge to study math. While a student there he used math to predict the presence of a new planet beyond Uranus. A few months after Adams made his prediction, a French astronomer also made the same prediction. The French astronomer was named Urbain Le Verrier. He wanted all of the credit for the discovery of the new planet which became known as Neptune. Most scientists now consider Adams and Le Verrier to be the co-discoverers of Neptune. Another contribution that Adams made to the world of astronomy involved the Leonid meteor shower. Adams studied the Leonid meteor shower as it occurred in 1866. He discovered it was due to a comet that comes very close to Earth once a year. Adams also studied the motion of the Moon. Adams taught math at Cambridge University. He also became the director of the Cambridge Observatory. John Couch Adams was married. He liked to study history, biology, literature, and geology. Adams died in 1892.

http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/A/Adams/1.html
Adams, John Couch
English astronomer who mathematically deduced the existence of the planet Neptune 1845 from the effects of its gravitational pull on the motion of Uranus, although it was not found until 1846 by J G Galle.
Adams also studied the Moon's motion, the Leonid meteors, and terrestrial magnetism.
Adams was born in Landeast, Cornwall, and educated at Cambridge, where he spent virtually his entire career.
He became professor 1858 and director of the observatory 1860.
The calculations to account for certain aberrations in the orbit of Uranus were taken up independently by Adams and French astronomer Urbain Leverrier
By 1845 Adams had determined the position and certain characteristics of the hypothetical planet affecting the orbit, but a search for the new planet was not instigated for nearly a year at Cambridge.
Meanwhile, Leverrier sent his figure to Galle at the Berlin Observatory, and Galle, having better maps, was able to find the planet within a few hours.
The discovery of Neptune was credited to Leverrier.
