"Abraham Kuyper, South Africa and Apartheid"
by GEORGE HARINCK George Harinck, Director of the Archives and Documentation Center of the Reformed Churches, Kampen, and staff member of the Historical Documentation Center for Dutch Protestantism at the Free University of Amsterdam, is the author of numerous publications on the history of Dutch Protestantism and its inter national relations. He delivered these re marks at the opening ceremony of the Abraham Kuyper Institute for Public Theology at Princeton Theological Seminary, at the Nassau Inn on February 1st, 2002. This article is reprinted from The Princeton Seminary Bulletin XXIII:3(2002):184-187. Last year, when I was a visiting scholar at Princeton Seminary, I was asked by my friend Max Stackhouse to write a book on Abraham Kuyper (1837—1920) and apartheid. During my research I found out that since 1975 the topic of Kuyper and apartheid has been well known in the international academic world. And it is common knowledge in the English speaking world that Abraham Kuyper is one of the fathers of apartheid. But in the Netherlands this topic is rather unknown. Is that not strange? Dutchmen know Kuyper of course. He founded one of the ten Dutch universities, the second largest Reformed denomination in the country, one of the three most influential political parties of the last century, and he was their prime minister from 1901 until 1905. The Dutch know about apartheid too. Many Kuyperians were active in the anti-apartheid movement. Just because they were related to the white Reformed churches in South Africa, and just because the Free University was related to Potchefstroom University, the Dutch Calvinists were all the more opposed to apartheid. In the 1970S they severed their ties with white churches and white universities and started to support black churches and black universities instead. When Alan Boesak said that to the black South Africans “

VCU's Donald J. Abraham was honored recently with a special invitation. Abraham, Ph.D., professor of medicinal chemistry and director of the Institute for Structural Biology and Drug Discovery, traveled to Cambridge, England, at the personal invitation of Vivien Perutz to give the closing remarks at a September memorial for Ms. Perutz's father and Abraham's friend and colleague - Nobel Laureate Max Ferdinand Perutz. Perutz, who shared the 1962 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his work on the structure of proteins, died in February of cancer. He was 87. Shortly after Perutz's death, Abraham sat down at his computer at 4 a.m. one sleepless night to jot down a few thoughts about his mentor. The "few thoughts" became a career-full of reflections. These are Dr. Abraham's memories of his 30-year relationship with Max Perutz: BACKGROUND: A TALE OF TWO VIENNESE
My wife and I hosted the professor and Mrs. Burger (she was 94, married to the professor for around 70 years and a very southern Virginia lady) at a pre-Christmas luncheon just before the millenium at their favorite restaurant overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains near their retirement complex. The professor died a week after our luncheon. One of the professor's last words to me was that he wished that he had gotten to meet Max. Max's last note to me came on a Christmas card last December. It read, "Don: Hope your work is flourishing. By a quirk of fate I have solved the amyloid structure and have sent it off to PNAS. Yours, Max." Like Max's last note, Professor Burger was a scientist until the end. At the end of the luncheon, Professor Burger said, "Don, do we have enough chapters on computational chemistry? It is important now."

Hello Everybody this is Dan from Detroit Sports and Motown Tigers . Max gave me his password and username about a month ago so I could fix his site, that is why its says "Posted by Max" at the end of this post. As you can see Max hasn't posted in over 2 weeks. I used to AIM him and email him a lot. Since he stopped posting I haven't seen him online and he hasn't emailed me. He never said that he was going to stop posting or anything. Maybe he is just gone or maybe his computer is broken. I have no clue why he hasn't posted. Whatever the reason I am sure that everybody will be waiting for him to come back and write about the team he loves.

    DImondbacks 12, Mets 8
    W: Daigle (2-1)
    L: Baldwin (0-1)
Both Baldwin and Wheeler pitched very bad. They could blame the ballpark and say that the ball was carrying, which is true, but they weren't making their pitches. Hanging sliders, no movement fastballs. Baldwin gave up 2 home runs and Wheeler gave up 3. The home runs cost the Mets the game as they outhit the Dimondbacks 17-14 and scored 8 runs. I don't understand why Bladwin is up here. I really don't. He is a old, doesn't have good stuff, and the Mets could be giving his spot to someone young. Don't they want to build for the future. In other news, the Mets will be facing some great pitchers this week, so get ready for a lot of 1 run games, knowing the Mets. They will be facing Randy Johnson, and this weekend's seires against the Astros, they will be facing Oswalt, Pettite, and the one who must not be named. (Roger Clemens.)

    "Abwanderung"/"migration":

A Nazi euphemism for deportation for so-called racial reasons. The term was used, without quotation marks, by the representatives of the Jewish community, on instructions from the "Aufsichtsbehörde"/ "supervisory authority", a euphemism for the Gestapo. This and other terminology was intentionally used to deceive the deportees. Aktion "Arbeitsscheu Reich":

The total number of such individuals arrested in Hamburg is unknown.
