Abraham bar Hiyya was a Spanish Jewish mathematician and astronomer. In the Hebrew of his time 'Ha-Nasi' meant 'the leader' but he is also known by the Latin name Savasorda which comes from his 'job description' showing that he held an official position in the administration in Barcelona. Abraham bar Hiyya is famed for his book Hibbur ha-Meshihah ve-ha-Tishboret (Treatise on Measurement and Calculation), translated into Latin by Plato of Tivoli as Liber embadorum in 1145. This book is the earliest Arab algebra written in Europe. It contains the complete solution of the general quadratic and is the first text in Europe to give such a solution. Rather strangely, however, 1145 was also the year that al-Khwarizmi 's algebra book was translated by Robert of Chester so Abraham bar Hiyya's work was rapidly joined by a second text giving the complete solution to the general quadratic equation. It is interesting to see the areas of mathematics and the mathematicians with which Abraham was familiar. Of course he knew geometry through the works of

A quotation by Abraham bar Hiyya
Who wishes correctly to learn the ways to measure surfaces and to divide them, must necessarily thoroughly understand the general theorems of geometry and arithmetic, on which the teaching of measurement ... rests. If he has completely mastered these ideas, he ... can never deviate from the truth.

What then is the aspect of these container-elements in which Aleph is buried? The life in them simply swarms, uncontrolled, in a state of (says the verse) "Tohu and Bohu", which is a whirlpool of life, not limited to the planet earth, but cosmically including all that exists in the Universe. And, at "the face of its very self", in its very "deepness", that chaos it totally fecund, abundant, prolifically fertile. Such is the "darkness" referred to in the accepted translation. And such is the true meaning of the first part of the second verse concerning Eretz, the so-called earth: that in which Aleph is concealed.

Eckstein, Jerome
AN INTEREST AND importance that it might otherwise not have had is given to this work by the "imprimatur" it bears of the Yeshiva University-the first time the school has chosen to extend such... ...Similarly, he never comes to grips with the problem of evil in a world ruled by an omnipotent God, missing the opportunity, with both of these issues, for an imaginative, unrestricted, and courageous attempt at solution which is provided in his own observation: By the 11th century there were other prob- lems that required elucidation, such as free will and determinism, the essence of God, His unity and justice, suffering and evil in the world-but those questions could be resolved either way, as the bibli- cal and talmudic sources were not alto- gether clear on the subjects... ...All of which can only be regarded as historical nonsense... ...Professor Stitskin's method, in short, permits him to evade the stubbornly perplexing, but central, problems of the philosophy of religion... ...Yet such an assertion can be accepted only by those who are unwilling to question any of the "premises" of the Torah and will go to all lengths to "reinterpret" the Bible to "meet" contrary aspects of experience...
