In 1815 he entered the cathedral school at Christiania (as Oslo was then called), and three years later he gave proof of his mathematical genius by his brilliant solutions of the original problems proposed by Bernt Holmboe. About this time, his father, a poor Protestant minister, died, and the family was left in straitened circumstances; but a small pension from the state allowed Abel to enter Christiania University in 1821. His first notable work was a proof of the impossibility of solving the quintic equation by radicals (see Abel-Ruffini theorem .) This investigation was first published in 1824 in abstruse and difficult form, and afterwards (1826) more elaborately in the first volume of Crelle's Journal. Further state aid enabled him to visit Germany and France in 1825, and having visited the astronomer Schumacher (1780-1850) at Altona, he spent six months in

It's a tale of youthful genius and tragedy, of revolution and theft, of algebra and geometry. This week marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the world's greatest mathematicians, Niels Henrik Abel. The maths prodigy combined geometry, algebra and calculus. But his most important work was first ignored, then lost, and was only published a decade after his death. Then the original manuscript vanished for a century, and has never been fully recovered. Earlier this year, Italian mathematician Andrea Del Centina was thrilled to find the missing eight pages of the manuscript. But his elation evaporated when he realized that, although four were written by Abel, four were in another hand "The old manuscript still attracts the interest of leading mathematicians the world over," says Del Centina of the University of Ferrara, Italy. "I am convinced that the four missing pages are still in existence - I am still searching for them." Able Abel Abel united different areas of maths in unexpected ways. "He brought together geometry, algebra and calculus - it's amazing how much flowed from that idea," says John Ewing, executive director of the American Mathematical Society.

It was named after the world famous Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel who proved that the polynomial equation of degree five may not be solved using addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and roots. Today, the contest consists of two rounds before the final. (The second round before the final was introduced in 1994-95. Before that, there was only one round before the final.) In the first round, the contestants are given 20 multiple choice problems, each with 5 choices. These are to be answered within 100 minutes. There is given 5 points per correct answer, 1 point per unanswered problem, and no points for false answers. Hence, if answers are picked at random, the expected score will be the same as if unanswered: 20 points. Tha maximum score is 100. The best 10% procede to the second round. Here, 10 problems are to be solved within 100 minutes. The answer to each problem is a 3-digit integer (0-999). 10 points are awarded for each correct answer, so that the maximum score is 100.

Abel, Niels Henrik Abel, Niels Henrik (Findö 1802 - Froland 1829), matematico norvegese; ai suoi studi si devono risultati determinanti per la nascita della matematica moderna, soprattutto nel campo dell' algebra e della teoria delle funzioni . Dopo aver compiuto gli studi presso l'università di Cristiania (odierna Oslo), trascorse due anni a Parigi e a Berlino e nel 1828, rientrato in patria, ebbe un incarico come docente. In algebra , il suo nome è famoso per il teorema (indipendentemente ottenuto anche dal matematico italiano Paolo Ruffini ) che dimostra l'impossibilità di risolvere, mediante procedimenti algebrici elementari, le equazioni algebriche di grado superiore al quarto. A lui si deve la definizione di un'importante classe di funzioni trascendenti, oggi note come "abeliane", generate dall'inversione di un tipo particolare di integrale (vedi analisi ), l'integrale ellittico, e di vari elementi dell'analisi ( integrale abeliano) e dell' algebra (gruppo abeliano, varietà abeliane).
