Prepared in 1995, this report presents a thorough description of what is known about polar bear populations.
Polar Bears in Zoos
The earliest known captive polar bear was housed by Ptolemy II, king of ancient Egypt (285-246 B.C.), in his private zoo in Alexandria.
The Romans probably also kept polar bears. In 57 A.D., Calpurnius wrote of bears pitted against seals in a flooded amphitheater.
Harold the Fair-haired of Norway was the first European king to keep captive polar bears. A hunter presented him with a mother and cubs in 880 A.D. King Harold was so overcome that he rewarded the man with an ocean-going ship filled with wood.
Some of the earliest maps led not to the Far East, but to sources of polar bears and white falcons.
Viking hunters captured polar bear cubs after killing their mother. After skinning the female, the hunters would spread her pelt on the snow, then easily catch the cubs when they came to lie on it.
Early rulers in Denmark, England, Germany, and Damascus kept captive polar bears.
In 1874, America's first zoo opened in Philadelphia. Its bear pits, where people could look down on live bears, were its most popular attraction.

The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA), whose membership includes accredited zoos and aquariums throughout North America, administers some 106 species survival plans (SSPs). Ringling Brothers circus operates a breeding program for Asian elephants. Sounds good, right?
Myth: Despite loss of habitat caused by human population growth, endangered species can be reintroduced into the wild through zoo- and circus-based captive breeding programs.
"If the wilderness disappears or is reduced beyond certain thresholds which we do not yet understand, species reintroductions cannot be viable," said Population Action International's Robert Engelman.
"There is a high correlation between human population and economic development trends in the U.S. and species decline and ecosystem destruction," it said. But the group takes no position on immigration, a major driver of population growth.

Take a giant step back in time to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth! Franklin Park Zoo's new Dinosaur Kingdom exhibit transforms the naturalistic, outdoor environs of the Bird's World Flight Cage and surrounding grounds into a realistic Mesozoic jungle where life-like moving, roaring, and even breathing, animatronic dinosaur replicas from the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods co-exist together. At Dinosaur Kingdom, you can get up close and personal with twelve giant dinosaurs including Triceratops, Stegosaurus, and an enormous Tyrannosaurus rex, measuring 47 feet long and 25 feet tall! Some of the other "terrible lizards" you will encounter are a flying Pteranodon with a wingspan of 26 feet, a spitting Dilophosaurus, and a long-necked Omeisaurus. Along the way, learn the connections between dinosaurs and modern day birds. After your journey to the past return to the present with a visit to the Dino Dig, an archaeological dig site, to uncover faux fossils from a time gone by. General admission to Dinosaur Kingdom is $3.
