    12. New Scientist: The Last Word Science Questions And Answers
Short book review from New Scientist magazine.
    http://www.last-word.com/nsplus/insight/animal/captives.html
Blubber bullets Question How fat would you have to be to be bulletproof, so that your fat layer would prevent a bullet fired from an ordinary handgun from reaching your vital organs? I recently read it was about 500 kilograms, but find this hard to believe. Ward van Nostram , By email, no address supplied Answers The damage a bullet does to its target is measured in two ways: the depth of penetration and the amount of tissue damage per centimetre of penetration. These two figures are normally found by firing live rounds into blocks of a thick, viscous gel that is formulated to have the same physical properties, such as viscosity, density, as human flesh. Although being bullet-proof may sound advantageous, carrying a 60-cm-thick layer of body fat obviously comes with its own health hazards. Thomas Lambert , Baslow, Derbyshire, UK
A human body would never be entirely bulletproof when you take into consideration tissues and appendages such as the hands, feet, eyes, ears and male genitals. Even if the skin was sufficiently thick to stop a bullet, the shock wave could seriously harm internal organs and the network of nerves below the skin, an effect which shot pellets exploit. Pellets from a shotgun can kill a human without penetrating the skin. A bullet's depth of penetration in a body depends on a number of factors, such as the bullet's energy, diameter, mass, shape and material. Bullets from rifles and handguns may range from approximately 5 to 15 millimetres in diameter and from 70 to 7000 joules in energy. A typical police handgun bullet has a diameter of 9 mm and an initial energy of 500 joules. Penetration depth is measured in a gelatine block, and the police handgun bullet typically penetrates about 30 cm of gelatine at a distance of 5 metres from the barrel.

Revised April 2001 THE ELEPHANT SANCTUARY Organization Profile: "Elephants are the keepers of ancient secrets, for they walked the world when it was new." The Elephant Sanctuary is a nonprofit refuge for sick, old and needy elephants who have been retired from zoos and circuses across the country. Located in Hohenwald, Tennessee about 65 miles southwest of Nashville, the Sanctuary is not designed to provide entertainment. However, public education is an essential part of the organization's ongoing mission. Tour groups and classes from area schools may schedule supervised visits to the Sanctuary. There they will enjoy the chance to learn about endangered wildlife first-hand, by viewing a family of elephants in an environment closely resembling their natural habitat. On-site staff members instruct visitors in the social structures, habits, and physical needs of elephants, In addition, trained volunteers regularly make presentations to area schools, educating students about the Sanctuary and its important role in conserving this precious and dwindling natural resource. Why an Elephant Sanctuary?

    18. Audubon Zoo
The animal list exceeds 1,500 specimens from amphibians to zebras, and educational presentations include the chance to interact with animals on Discovery Walk; narrated feedings; and shows starring sea lions, elephants and a collection of local creatures such as nutria and alligators. Counted among the nation's top zoos.
