Branches of biology relevant to zoology
The original branches of zoology established in the late 19th century such as zoo-physics, bionomics and morphography, have largely been subsumed into more broad areas of biology which include studies of mechanisms common to both plants and animals. The biology of animals is covered in several broad areas:
  • The physiology of animals is studied under various fields including anatomy and embryology The common genetic and developmental mechanisms of animals and plants is studied in molecular biology molecular genetics and developmental biology The ecology of animals is covered under behavioral ecology and other fields Evolutionary biology of both animals and plants is considered in the articles on evolution population genetics heredity variation ... biogeography and taxonomy classify and group species via common descent and regional associations.

However, with the proliferation of specialist journals, which cater for these important but specialist topics, the Editors have redirected the focus of the Journal to publish hypothesis-driven research that will be of greater interest to the general reader in zoology. Vertebrate Zoology is the study of animals with backbones. Research in the department covers fishes amphibians, reptiles birds , and mammals The department holds the largest collection of vertebrate specimens in the world, including historically important collections from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Research in the department provides a solid foundation of understanding for government agencies, conservation organizations, and individuals involved in fish and wildlife management. Zoologists from two other federal agencies work so closely with colleagues and specimens at the Museum that they are permanently stationed in the building. Specialists from the National Marine Fisheries Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce focus primarily on commercially important fishes, while those from the Geological Survey of the U.S. Department of the Interior focus on amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Since 1972, the department has also included the Marine Mammal Program , which focuses on whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions. Working closely with federal, state, and local governments, Museum staff study stranded animals as well as those taken by commercial fisheries. These observations help shed new light on the population sizes, distributions, eating habits, and reproductive patterns of these rare animals. Director: James Mead.

Zoology is the study of animal life. Zoologists research everything they think to ask about animals, including their anatomy and interrelationships, their physiology and genetics, their distributions and habitats. Human beings have been zoologists for as long as there have been human beings. As humans, we are intricately tied to animal life - we've depended on many of them for food, work, and friendship throughout our evolution and history....not to mention that we ARE animals! My interest in zoology began when I was very young. I remember being fascinated with animals from an early age. Once, when I was a five year-old boy living in Montana, my father came home to my brother and I with a surprise. With a big smile on his face, he pulled his cowboy hat off his head, leaning over as he did. He held his hat upside down toward us, showing us the wonderful surprise inside - a small, brownish-orange, bumpy toad! It was the first such creature I had ever seen in my life, one that has made a lasting impression on me. In fact, my fascination with creatures like these have driven me towards a career in zoology.

Accounts of individual species include information on distributions, natural history, conservation, and economic importance, along with pictures and sounds if available. Synopses of some higher taxonomic groups are also provided. The information is arranged in a taxonomic hierarchy for ease of navigation, and "shortcuts" (either through searching for specific names or characteristics or through direct links to some taxa) make it simple to find particular species or groups of species."

There is a secret zoo that runs encaged along the roads.
They are liquid, semi-visible goliaths that rage through the streams and chunks of ordinary traffic, with the effervescent tendrils of mile-long tails whipping behind them like Chinese dragons. Though composed of hundreds of pounds of steel, glass and plastic, they are able to pass through solid objects. They are bound by the laws of the highway, but not by any conventional notion of time or space.
They are Aggregate Traffic Animals : a menagerie of emergent beasts drawn from the interacting behaviours of many individual human beings driving many individual cars with many individual goals, their collective activity giving rise to something with greater presence, power and purpose than the sum of its constituents. They take on a host of different forms, each to serve a different end.
They are real, and they drive among us.
