The 120 staff have a heavy input into many aspects of research on systematics, using a variety of approaches - from traditional morphological studies to the latest molecular techniques. The Department's curators look after the collections, comprising 30 million specimens, 22 million of which are in spirit and stored in the special facilities of the new Darwin Centre.

28. Zoos
A brief overview of zoological practices from 4500 B.C. to the 20th century.
http://www.wta.org.za/info/history/zoos.htm
History of Zoology
Zoo also called Zoological Garden, or Zoological Park, a place where wild animals and, in some instances, domesticated animals are exhibited in captivity. In such an establishment animals can generally be given more intensive care than is possible in nature reserves or sanctuaries. It is not exactly known when the earliest zoos were established, but it is possible that they were associated with the first attempts at animal domestication.
4500 – 2500 BC
Pigeons were kept in captivity as early as 4500 BC in what is now Iraq, and 2,000 years later elephants were semi-domesticated in India. The earliest known examples of zoo management date back to the ancient Egyptians who began keeping wild animals. Antelopes, including the addax, ibex, oryx, and gazelle, are depicted wearing collars on Egyptian tomb pictures at Saqqara, dating from 2500 BC.
1500 BC
The pharaohs of later periods such as Tuthmosis III (1501-1447 BC) imported many animals to Egypt. Queen Hatshephut, his stepmother, organised expeditions to capture wild animals as far afield as Somalia. Those expeditions brought back monkeys, leopards, cheetahs, various birds, large cattle and even giraffe.
1000 BC
In China, the Empress Tanki, who probably lived about 1150 BC, built a great marble "house of deer"; and Wen Wang, who apparently reigned just before 1000 BC, established a zoo of 1,500 acres in extent, which he named the Ling-Yu, or Garden of Intelligence.

Olympian Anita DeFrantz ´74 urges graduating seniors to ‘be brave, think critically’
Thirty years after she sat with her classmates and listened as Commencement speaker architect/mathematician R. Buckminster Fuller sent her out into the world, Anita DeFrantz returned to the Connecticut College campus to exhort 459 graduates to “make it true that we live in ‘the land of the free and the home of the brave.’ “We are too experienced and too well educated to lead our lives as puppets. We cannot afford to listen silently, then nod our heads and move on. We cannot lose all the education that we’ve earned. We dare not squander our own integrity. We must be brave to think critically. We must be free to believe in ourselves,” said DeFrantz, who, believing in herself, graduated Connecticut College in 1974 and went on to lead the U.S. women’s rowing team to a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympic Games while studying law. DeFrantz, an emeritus member of the College’s Board of Trustees, received an honorary degree in humane letters. Two other awards were made at Commencement.

Ant parasite queens abandon multiple mating
A lthough females are traditionally thought to be monogamous, it has become increasingly evident that multiple mating by females is commonplace. In a new study scientists from the Institute of Zoology and Biological Institute, University of Copenhagen, Denmark describe extreme mating systems in two closely related ant species: females of one typically mate with ten males, an extraordinary number compared to most animals, whilst females of the other have reverted to single mating, a phenomenon that has not previously been described. This reversion can be attributed to a reduction in the benefits of multiple mating for females, shedding light on the mechanisms underlying the evolution and maintenance of female sexual behaviour. Ant parasite queens revert to mating singly

This is the most obvious case: a student submits, as his or her own work, an essay that has been written by someone else. Usually the original source is a published journal article or book chapter. The use of unpublished work, including the work of another student , is just as serious.
