Planetarian , Spring 1977 [see note at bottom]
Sooner or later anyone involved with astronomy has contact (or conflict) with astrology or someone interested in astrology. To a great extent the response from the astronomical and planetarium community has been defensive, denying the validity of astrology when asked. There have been some attempts to go on the offensive, such as the recent publication Objections to Astrology (Prometheus Books, 1975). However, such clearly antiastrology publications are probably only read by those who already are nonbelievers.
To put astrology in the proper perspective, we can do two things to try to remedy the situation. First we must stop spreading astrological information. Yes, I believe all of us have done this even though unintentionally. The prime example and major point of this article is in reference to the band of the zodiac. Consider just the ecliptic. How often have you referred to the twelve constellations that the sun passes through during a year? The number twelve is correct only if one is using astrological constellations. There are thirteen astronomical constellations that cross the ecliptic. Whenever you refer to the zodiac use the number thirteen and name the constellations of the ecliptic (see Table #l). If someone complains that these are not the right constellations, just point out that all constellations are arbitrary and strictly artificial. The ones we use are the official constellations of the International Astronomical Union.

One tidbit of "astronomical" information that most people seem to know is their "sun sign." But few people know what it means. Fewer still know that it doesn't mean that at all, or at least that it hasn't for the past few thousand years. If asked, most people would say that a "Gemini" is a person who was born when the sun was in front of the stars of the constellation Gemini the twins. That might have been true about 2,600 years ago, but it isn't today-for two reasons. First, when the astrological sun sign system was set up more than two thousand years ago, the sun's path was divided into twelve equally spaced "signs," each 30 degrees wide, and these signs only approximately coincided with the constellations. Cancer, for example, is a small constellation, and Pisces is huge, but both are accorded onetwelfth of the sun's annual path. The constellation Cancer which is made of stars - never coincided exactly with the sign of Cancer which is a 30 degree wide zone along the sun's path. And each astronomer/astrologer had his own idea of where the constellation Cancer began and ended, and even of how many constellations there were. Astronomers finally settled this nagging problem about 60 years ago when the international Astronomical Union said these are the official constellation boundaries, and published a set of specifications that reads like a surveyor's plot of irregular parcels of land. This, for example, is the true location of the constellation Cancer:

UAC 2002 Was Great!
For those attending UAC 2002 in Orlando, FL, recently, I needn't tell you it was a great convention. For those of you who missed out on the trip for some reason, you really missed a great one. Hopefully, you can make the next one in three years. Since apparently UAC seems to get progressively better each time, you'll surely have a great time and the next one as well. (By the way, there are eight pages of pictures for those of you who would like to see some of the people and events there.) UAC stands for United Astrology Conference, and it's held every three years. It's sponsored by the three main professional organizations of AFAN, ISAR and NCGR. Astrologers from all over the world
come to these conferences, exchanging knowledge and skills. This year, we had 850 registrants. There are numerous lectures and classes and all kinds of interesting opportunities to hone your skills and learn more about astrology and techniques that others use. It's simply an astrologer's dreamland. We opened this year's meeting with a keynote speech from Diana Stone, from Seattle. She was simply marvelous. Her speech was very witty and inspiring. She wove past experiences into a rich tapestry of wit and learning. Diana has Rheumatoid Arthritis. She had to be lifted from her wheel chair to a stool behind the microphone. When she alluded to her painful disease, she said the "Lords of Saturn came to visit", in response to some of her shenanigans. Point here being that you can deny Saturn and "run away" all you wish, but he

The 13 Constellations of the Zodiac
The Zodiac is the ring of constellations that the Sun seems to pass through each year as the Earth orbits around it. Contrary to popular belief, there are actually 13 zodiacal constellations, if you pay attention to the way astronomers define them. In addition to Capricornus Aquarius Pisces Aries ... Scorpius , and Sagittarius the Sun also passes through Ophiuchus Try getting some astrologer to explain THAT one to you... While you're at it, ask them to explain why all the "Signs of the Zodiac" are off by about one month. (hint: astrology was invented more than 2000 years ago and the precession of the Earth's pole has caused changes in the postions of the stars since then) The path the Sun follows is called the ecliptic . The ecliptic plane is the plane defined by the Earth's orbit around the Sun. All of the planets except Pluto orbit very near the ecliptic plane, so you will usually find all of them in zodiacal constellations. Notice that in astronomy, it is Scorpius , not Scorpio and Capricornus , not Capricorn. These are the official names for the constellations.

The Zodiac Killer
California's most elusive serial killer claimed his first confirmed victim on October 30, 1966, in Riverside . That evening, Cheri Jo Bates, and 18-year-old freshman at Riverside City College, emerged from the campus library to find her car disabled, the distributor coil disconnected. Police theorize that her killer approached with an offer of help, then dragged her behind some nearby shrubbery where a furious struggle ended with Cheri stabbed in the chest and back, her throat slashed so deeply that she was nearly decapitated. In November 1966, a letter to the local press declared that Cheri "is not the first and she will not be the last." Following publication of an article about the case on April 30, 1967 , identical letters were posted to the newspaper, police, and to the victim's father. They read: "Bates had to die. There will be more." On December 20, 1968, 17-year-old David Faraday was parked with his date, 16-year-old Betty Lou Jensen, on a rural road east of the Vallejo city limits in northern California. A night-stalking gunman found them there and killed both teenagers, shooting Faraday in the head as he sat behind the wheel of his car. Betty Lou ran 30 feet before she was cut down by a tight group of five shots in the back, fired from a .22-caliber automatic pistol. On July 4, 1969, Michael Mageau, 19, picked up his date, 22-year-old Darlene Ferrin, for a

"The Zodiac case is of particular interest because it may have been the
most cerebral murder case of all time. The case is full of unknowns. What
appears to have been unprovoked catharsis may actually indicate a
premeditated, cold-blooded act of instrumental aggression. Or does it? What passes for craziness may really have been a well-planned scheme to accomplish what the killer wanted. Or was it?"
-Dr. Jack Levin, Northeastern University, Boston, MA "We have not made any conclusion as to who the Zodiac was or is, and at this point the investigation is still open." -Insp. - Return to top of the page - Our Assessment: B : an entertaining ride, though it ultimately goes a bit overboard See our review for fuller assessment. The complete review 's Review Written in a fresh, funny style, Zodiac is an often enjoyable little ecological thriller. Narrator Sangamon Taylor, who works for a Greenpeace-like organization, GEE, in Boston, goes about saving the world, mainly by exposing (and stopping, by any means possible) the illegal dumping of chemicals by industry. It is an amusing premise, and Stephenson is right in finding the slightly wacky, very creative environmental action groups an ideal setting for a novel. Taylor lives a laid back, generally carefree life, without much respect for authority. Dealing with big corporations, who show absolutely no respect for the environment or EPA laws, he takes what they do very seriously, without taking them seriously. Sniffing nitrous oxide from huge Hefty bags, living and working with a cast of true characters (though not so far-out as to be truly annoying), Taylor is also very serious about his job, and very good at it.
