Absolute Zero!
Michael Lea There is no limit to how hot an object can be, but the lowest temperature is absolute zero at -273.15deg.C or K. The lowest temperatures which occur naturally are on Triton in the Solar System and in inter-galactic space. Much lower temperatures can be created in the laboratory, but not as low as Absolute Zero! W hat is the Lowest Temperature ever produced? Where is the Coldest Place in the Solar System? How Cold is Outer Space? Can we reach Absolute Zero? We must first decide the meaning of temperature itself. It is all to do with energy. Put an ice-cube into a glass of orange juice and energy, or heat , will flow into the colder ice until it melts. The drink cools until it reaches thermal equilibrium at a uniform temperature T All objects contain internal energy , which consists of potential energy from the interactions between atoms and kinetic energy from random thermal motion of the atoms. It is this energy which is transferred as heat from high to low temperatures. Boiling water scalds you as kinetic energy transfers to your fingers, trying to reach thermal equilibrium! As the temperature increases, so does the internal, or thermal, energy as the atoms move faster. The clearest example is a gas where the internal thermal energy is just the kinetic energy of the atoms and is proportional to the pressure P (see Box 1 ). A graph of

http://www.nsf.gov/nstw_questions/chem/quest003.htm
W hat is absolute zero
Absolute zero is the lowest temperature theoretically possible, characterized by complete absence of heat. Absolute zero is approximately -273.16 C (-459.69 F), or zero degree on the Kelvin scale (0K). The concept of absolute zero temperature was first deduced from experiments with gases; when a fixed volume of gas is cooled, its pressure decreases with its temperature. Although this experiment cannot be conducted below the liquefaction point of the gas, a plot of the experimental values of pressure versus temperature can be extrapolated to zero pressure. The temperature at which the pressure would be zero is the absolute zero temperature. This experimental concept of a gas-thermometer temperature scale and of absolute zero was subsequently shown to be consistent with the theoretical definitions of absolute zero. Absolute zero cannot be reached experimentally, although it can be closely approached. Temperature measurements at values close to absolute zero also present special problems. Gas thermometers can only be used up to the liquefaction point of helium. At lower temperatures, electric and magnetic measurements must be used to determine the effective temperature. The concept of absolute zero temperature is also important in theoretical considerations. According to the third law of thermodynamics, the entrophy, or state of disorder, of a pure crystal is zero at absolute zero temperature; this is of considerable importance in analyzing chemical reactions and in quantum physics. Absolute value has many uses, but you probably won't see anything interesting for a few more classes yet. For now, you can view absolute value as the distance from zero. (There is a technical definition for absolute value, but you probably won't see this for quite a while yet, if ever.) Look at the number line: The absolute value of x x x "), is regarded as the distance of x from zero. This is why absolute value is never negative; absolute value only asks "how far?", not "in which direction?". This means that , because is three units to the right of zero, and also , because is three units to the left of zero. (Note: The absolute value notation is bars , not parentheses or brackets. Use the proper notation, as the other notations do not mean the same thing!) It is important to note that the absolute value bars do NOT work in the same way as do parentheses. Whereas , this is NOT how it works for absolute value:
  • Simplify
  • Given , first handle the absolute value part, taking the positive and converting the absolute value bars to parentheses: Now you can take the negative through the parentheses:
So you see that if you take the negative of an absolute value, you will get a negative number for your answer!

The aberration of light is a phenomenon in which light appears to be slanted (the angle at which the light appears to be coming is different than the angle at which it's actually coming) if the observer is in motion. (An analogous situation is watching rain fall from a moving train - although a raindrop is falling straight to the ground, it will appear to fall at a slant, and the slant increases as the train's speed increases.) The aberration of light is due to the fact that light travels at a finite speed (as do the raindrops). The aberration of light was discovered and demonstrated by James Bradley (an English amateur astronomer) in 1725. The discovery of the aberration of light was one of the first proofs that the speed of light was finite; it also provided an early estimate of the speed of light (Bradley calculated that the time it took for light to travel from the Sun to the Earth was 8 minutes and 12 seconds). ABLATION Ablation is a cooling process in which heat is carried away from an object (like a falling

Question
What will happen to the gas at absolute zero temperature (0 K)? Asked by: Rohit Answer First of all, the gas will no longer be a gas at absolute zero, but rather a solid. As the gas is cooled, it will make a phase transition from gas into liquid, and upon further cooling from liquid to solid (ie. freezing). Some gases, such as carbon dioxide, skip the liquid phase altogether and go directly from gas to solid. Now the question is: what are the atoms in the solid doing (if anything) at absolute zero. Are they totally motionless? The answer is no. Atoms, being very tiny particles, must be analyzed using quantum mechanics, and one of the cornerstones of this theory is the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle (HUP). The HUP states that the uncertainty of a particle's position and momentum (mass times velocity) are not independent of each other; the product of these uncertainties must be greater than a certain value. In equation-ese: (position uncertainty)*(momentum uncertainty) > h The number 'h' is called Planck's constant, and pops up throughout quantum mechanics. This equation requires the atoms in the solid to have a certain amount of intrinsic jitteriness, even at absolute zero. If the atoms were totally motionless, then both the position and momentum uncertainties would be zero, disobeying HUP.

TOWARDS THE ABSOLUTE ZERO
The new microkelvin refrigerator became operational in 1998. It provides a plaform for ultralow temperature experiments below 100 microkelvin in high magnetic fields up to 7 T. In 1999, the nuclei of a single crystal rhodium sample were cooled in this apparatus to the record breaking temperature of 250 picokelvin.

Adiabatic Demagnetization Cooling
The temperature of a given system is established by interactions between its constituents. Various subsystems may have different temperatures if they are effectively decoupled from each other. Fascinating examples of this are the assemblies of nuclear spins and conduction electrons in metals. Mutual interactions between the small nuclear moments are extremely weak and at low temperatures the nuclei are so well isolated that their temperature can be many orders of magnitude lower, or higher, than that of the lattice and conduction electrons.
The temperature of an isolated spin system can be altered by an adiabatic change of the external magnetic field, which is the basis for nuclear demagnetization cooling. This technique has been developed to its extreme at the LTL by operating two nuclear stages in cascade. In these studies the nuclear spin system of the second stage is, in fact, also the system under experimental investigation.
