Whales and Dophins
Whales and Dolphins are marine animals. They live in oceans around the world. Whales and Dolphins come from the same family, CETACEA (sey-tay-sha) . They both breath from a blowhole located at the top of their head. Whales and dolpins are mammals. They are mammals because they have lungs not gills, they have hair not scales , and they also have give live birth and don't lay eggs. There are only about 80 kinds of whales and dolphins that we know of right now.
Whales
Whales are very large animals. They can grow up to 100 ft. or more in length. They can weigh up to 200 tons or more. Whales live in families called pods. These pods vary in numbers and consist of family members and family friends. Whales live in these families their whole life. Group living is safer when other whales or sharks attack. It also makes it easier to find food. Whales are always migrating. They travel to find food, breed and have young. Whales do not have eyelids. They rely on thick oily tears to protect their eyes. Whales hear from little holes behind their eyes. Whales talk to each other by making high pitched sounds like whistles, clicks, squeaks, rattles, and groans.

Whales, dolphins, and porpoises all belong to the same taxonomic order called cetaceans. Cetaceans are truly remarkable animals! They are mammals which means they are warm-blooded, they have at least a few hairs on their bodies, and they nourish their young with milk. Cetaceans spend their whole lives in water and some live in family groups called "pods." Cetaceans are known for their seemingly playful behavior including " breaching ," " spyhopping ," or " tail slapping ." How many kinds of cetaceans are there? How do cetaceans behave? U.S. Department of Commerce NOAA NMFS AFSC /NMML Detailed Information about Killer Whales What should I know about killer whales? Where do killer whales live? Killer whales can be found in all oceans but they seem to prefer coastal waters and cooler regions. Killer whales occur in family groups called pods. Three types of pods have been described:
  • Resident pods: remain stable over time Transient pods: dynamic in structure (are constantly changing) Offshore pods: Are seen only in outer coast waters and not much else is known of them.
“offshore” whales were seen only in outer coast waters. Killer whale pods are based on the lineage of the mother (mothers, daughters, and sons form groups); the whales live and travel with their mothers even after they are full-grown, forming strongly matriarchal whale societies. How many killer whales are there?

Seabirds and Whales of Louisiana
The Louisiana Ornithological Society (LOS) sponsors daylong expeditions starting from Port Fourchon, LA, to search the deep waters off the mouth of the Mississippi River for seabirds, whales, and dolphins. In many ways these have been voyages of discovery; scientific knowledge of the seabirds of the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana is limited and fragmentary. If you want to know more about this, here are links. Seabirds . We've seen over a dozen species of birds not normally found on or near land in Louisiana, including some first records for the state. Whales and dolphins . The Gulf of Mexico isn't dense with mammals, but it hosts a remarkable diversity of cetacean species. Here are some we've seen. Trip lists . What are the chances of seeing Red-billed Tropicbird, Sperm Whale, or some other sought-after species on these trips? Judge for yourself from these listings.
Do you want to go on one of these trips? Details of how to sign up and what the trips are like can be found on the Pelagic Page on the Louisiana Ornithological Society web site.

Rescuers save 46 stranded whales
Nine whales died on hot beach
Dozens of volunteers help keep more than 50 beached pilot whales moist until high tide comes in. DENNIS, Massachusetts (CNN) Rescuers successfully pushed 46 of 55 stranded pilot whales back into the water of Cape Cod Bay on Monday. The remaining nine whales died on the hot beach, they said. The rescuers, from the Cape Cod Stranding Network and other facilities, worked to keep the whales' body temperature down until the tide rose enough to enable them to be moved into deeper water. "Things appear to be going better than could even be hoped," said Scott Landry, a marine biologist with the Stranding Network. The whales were discovered early Monday morning near Chapin Beach in Dennis. Most were clumped together in a group that included adults and young. Volunteers poured water on the whales and covered them with sheets and towels to regulate their body temperatures. "The unusual part about this particular stranding is that it was such a large number of individuals in [July]," Landry said. Most such strandings occur in the spring or fall.

RELATED Stranded whales released into ocean BIG PINE KEY, Florida (CNN) Five pilot whales were released back into the wild Sunday, nearly four months after they stranded themselves in the Florida Keys. CNN correspondent John Zarrella was at the site as volunteers performed the painstaking task of preparing the whales for release. He gave this report to anchor Fredricka Whitfield. ZARRELLA: [The whales are] off. They're on the way. It's going to take a couple hours for them to be hauled out on boats ... [It'll be] about two-and-a-half hours before they get 12 miles offshore to the drop site. It's a historic event. Never before have five whales from a single stranding been rehabilitated and returned back to the sea.

93. Wings Over Whales - Whale Watching In Kaikoura New Zealand
Whale watching all year round off the Kaikoura Coast of New Zealand with a 95% chance of seeing Sperm whales or many others from the air.
http://www.whales.co.nz/
While you are in New Zealand head for Kaikoura and go whale watching, by aeroplane! It's the only way to view whales and mountains, while in New Zealand. In a typical 30 minute flight you will see the majestic Sperm Whale preparing for his next dive and up to 500 Dusky Dolphins cavorting with each other. On occasion sightings include Southern Right, Humpback, Fin, Sei, Brydes, Pilot, Southern Bottlenose and the mighty Blue Whales, and also Common, Hectors, Risso's and Southern Right Whale Dolphins and of course, Orca, although these are all less frequent visitors to the area. You may also fly over Kaikoura Peninsula and see evidence of Maori fortifications (Pa sites), New Zealand Fur Seals resting and the Kaikoura township itself. For some, conditions will allow a spectacular flight over the Seaward Kaikoura Ranges rising to approximately 2800m. After the flight relax in the log terminal over a light meal and drink. An upstairs lounge looks over the sea and local mountains. The gift shop offers momentos of your experience. Wings over Whales provide a comfortable flight, experienced pilots giving an authoritative inflight commentary, at a reasonable cost.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) The Navy has agreed to limit its peacetime use of a new sonar system designed to detect enemy submarines, but which may also harm marine mammals and fish, an environmentalist group said. The Navy and the Natural Resources Defense Council, which sued the military on the issue, reached a legal settlement last week in which the Navy agreed to use the new system only in specific areas along the eastern seaboard of Asia, according to documents provided by the environmental group. The agreement must be approved by a federal magistrate to become permanent, but if implemented the deal would greatly restrict the Navy's original plan for the sonar system, which once was slated to be tested in most of the world's oceans. Navy officials familiar with the case could not immediately be reached for comment.
