Riverdeep's Wonderful Wetlands Xcursion is a virtual field trip to various Web sites that discuss these aquatic habitats and why they are important to the environment. The Xcursion itinerary showcases maps of wetlands, soil diagrams, information on plants that thrive in wetlands, pictures of common wetland habitats such as bogs and swamps, and information on what citizens can do to protect wetlands. The Xcursion Start Page contains the following questions. The page should be printed out so that answers to the questions can be written as the field trip progresses.

    Wetland Links
Last updated on Wed 09 Jul 2003 at 08:26 PM I would appreciate any reports of inactive links on this page or of any wetland-related web pages that are not listed here that might be good to list. I am now much more heavily involved in groundwater modeling than in wetlands so this page tends to get attention only when someone points out something that could be changed. Send corrections to rbwinston@mindspring.com I don't know whether any of the products on this page really work. I just saw that there was some information available that might be of interest to people who deal with wetlands.

Stream and River Assessments Wetland Delineations and Assessments Wetland Hydrology and Monitoring Abandoned Mine Reclamation/Restoration ... Education and Outreach Aquascape Wetland and Environmental Services and its associates possess extensive experience in providing a wide variety of environmental services to a wide range of clients. These services include designing and conducting stream assessments, conducting wetland delineations, designing and constructing mitigation wetlands, conducting environmental assessments, environmental permitting, and ecological restoration. We are also active in research, as well as the development and application of new methodologies for the characterization and assessment of stream reaches and wetlands. We have conducted both qualitative and quantitative stream assessments for clients in the mining, waste, and natural gas industries, as well as government agencies and non-profit organizations. Stream assessments have involved the assessment of macroinvertebrate and fish communities through the collection and identification of species, as well as the characterization of stream and riparian habitats. Aquascape has participated in a number of abandoned mine restoration projects in Western Pennsylvania, which have involved the construction of innovative passive treatment systems. Other aspects of these restoration projects have included incorporating biodiversity into treatment wetlands, streambank stabilization, riparian area restoration, and upland habitat improvements. For mine permit applications, Aquascape has also designed and/or constructed mitigation wetlands, riparian area restoration plans, pond habitat enhancements, and upland restoration plans.

How Do Contaminants Move and Change
    in an Ecosystem?
In the early 1980s, waterfowl in marshy areas of California's San Joaquin Valley started appearing with birth deformities. The birth rate among mallard ducks declined, and a large portion of the black-crowned night heron population was wiped out. Scientists traced the cause of this disaster to the element selenium (chemical symbol Se). How did the Se get there and what can we do to protect wildlife from contamination? Read on, starting with Clue #1, to find out how scientists studied this problem and what answers they found. Clue #1 Clue #2 Clue #3 Clue #4 Putting the Pieces Together MicroWorlds Contents

    Wetlands Research ProJect
News 4 April 2002 - Well the model wetland plans have fallen through because of the cost. However, we have decided to do a field study in the 4th quarter. We have finalized our sites and we have information posted about each of them. Check back in the coming days for more information on each site including topographical maps of each study area. To see our plans click here. The Proposal For our year long research project, we will develop an investigation into wetlands. One of the main topics we will focus on among many others is the idea of using wetlands to treat wastewater. The first quarter section of the project will be mainly background research and setup of this website. The following quarters will include experimentation on the properties of individual plants in a wetland, the construction of a small treatment wetland, and a possible feasability study of the use of constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment of a whole community. These rich, usually soggy places provide critical habitat for numerous species, help clean our water, control floods, and provide plenty of food for humans. Like many environments, wetlands have long been misunderstood. Listening to the first frogs of the spring. Scanning tall grasses for a sandhill crane's nest. Dipping a canoe paddle into chocolate-colored water. Swatting mosquitoes. Pulling cattails to collect their roots for a salad. Eating cranberries, crab cakes, shrimp, and wild rice. Drinking fresh water. Watching sea turtles float in the ocean. All of these activities depend on wetlands. Wetlands are wild, wet, mucky, stinky, and absolutely fabulous places to visit. Come along for a tour! What is a Wetland?
