Main Gate to Kildeer Countryside Virtual Wetland Preserve
Welcome to the Kildeer Countryside Virtual Wetland Preserve (formerly the Twin Groves Virtual Wetlands Preserve). As you wander through our wetland you should be able to learn about biodiversity and Illinois wetlands. There are many connections between the wetlands and the creatures and plants that live there and humans. As you go to each type of wetland area, you will be introduced to the plants, mammals, insects, amphibians/reptiles, and birds which make their homes there. Before you begin your journey through our virtual wetland preserve, you might want to take a look at the sign posted at the entry which gives a brief explanation to our Vanishing Wetlands . There is also a handout explaining the Benefits of Illinois Wetlands that you might want to take along with you. We also have a flier explaining how our virtual wetland preserve was built in conjunction with the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and Brookfield Zoo / Illinois Museums as part of the Museums in the Classroom projects. Please take a flier as you pass through the gate You can also stop off at our Watch Tower and climb to the top to get a good view of the natural impact and human impact on the wetlands.

Constructed Wetlands
Welcome
Welcome to my constructed wetland page. My name is James Payton and I am a graduate student in Agricultural Engineering in the College of Engineering at Auburn University in the beautiful village of Auburn, Alabama . As you can probably tell, my research deals with constructed wetlands. I created this page as a source of general information about this technology and about my research. This page is not in any way an all inclusive source of constructed wetland information. Due to time constraints, I am no longer able to maintain this page. Please refer to the links below for additional information about constructed wetlands.
What is a constructed wetland?
    The book definition
A constructed wetland is "a designed and man-made complex of saturated substrates, emergent and submergent vegetation, animal life, and water that simulates natural wetlands for human use and benefits." (from Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment: Municipal, Industrial and Agricultural , 1989, D.A. Hammer, ed. Lewis Publishers, Inc. Chelsea, Michigan)
    Why constructed wetlands exist
With the advent of large industries, confinment of animals for agricultural purposes and high-density populations, the need to dispose of increasing amounts of waste has become a major concern. Failing to deal with these wastes in the past led to contaminated surface and sub-surface waters. Constructed wetlands is one method used to help purify wastewaters.

Helping Hoosiers learn about wetlands and the important place they hold in our world. Welcome to Indiana Wetlands! If you're reading this letter, you have an interest in wetlands. Maybe you’re working to preserve wetlands because you like their scenic beauty or their environmental benefits. Maybe you're a student with a research paper to write. Maybe you’re a real estate developer or agricultural producer who owns land that may have wetlands present. Maybe you're a nature photographer, an angler or a hunter, and you know that wetlands are essential to the wildlife you seek. Maybe you're all of these things.
This Web site was created by people who share your interests in wetlands - whatever they are. We represent anglers, hunters, developers, farmers, naturalists, conservationists, and environmentalists. And we share your love of Indiana.
This Web site is meant to help you find out whatever you want or need to know about the role wetlands play in Indiana. It will show you where you can follow legislation that would affect wetlands, secure permits to preserve or alter wetlands, or just learn more about them. If you have information you think should be on this site, please let us know. Enjoy your visit!

Webquest Indiana Wetlands Have you ever read the picture book "Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp" by Mercer Mayer? How about "Blackwater Swamp" by Bill Wallace? Well, a swamp is a type of wetland. Third graders all study about Indiana Wetlands for a grade level project. You as a team are going to give a presentation to each third grade class, discussing different aspects of Indiana Wetlands. Each one of you will create a part to be presented in your final presentation. The Task This is a webquest. You will be using the internet to visit sites. You will each decide which questions to investigate as part of the total presentation given to the classes. All the questions must be answered and reported on for your presentation to the classes. It would be good to work in pairs to answer the questions. These are the questions you will be answering: Write out a definition of the term wetland. Write about the classifications of different wetlands. Discuss the importance of wetlands. Why are they valuable, what is their function? Detail the consequences of losing or degrading wetlands Report on the economic benefits of wetlands Detail current facts about our American wetlands.

Coastal wetlands stretch inland from estuaries and beaches. In temperate climates, they're salt marshes and grassy fresh marsh and tidal flats. In tropical areas, they include swampy forests of mangroves . Draining, dredging, and filling wetlands, as well as rising sea level, are destroying coastal wetlands worldwide
The information on this buoy is divided into the three categories listed below.
What's to lose?
There's more to swamps and marshes than meets the eye. Awash with nutrients and plant debris, coastal wetlands are prime nurseries for fishes, shrimps, and crabs, and nesting sites for waterfowl . Not only do wetlands crawl with wildlife, they also filter out pollutants, buffer inland areas from storm, wave, and flood damage, and support food production for humans Red and black mangroves, Belize

Wetlands for the Treatment of Mine Drainage
There is considerable interest in the problem of contaminated mine drainage - and acid mine drainage specifically - within the mining and environmentalist communities. This web site gives examples of wetlands cleaning up contaminated mine water, describes how they do it, and discusses environmental consequences of this. The information is presented in several sections, all of which are initially linked to this page. This site is designed and maintained by Dr. . My qualifications to talk about wetlands are presented here . I would sincerely appreciate receiving your thoughts and comments, as well as your contributions. Feel free to write me a note You can find more about the services offered by Microbial Technologies at www.microbialtech.com
Introduction
The largest single environmental problem facing the mining industry is Acid Mine Drainage. More information on this topic is found on this excellent web site Two key features of AMD should be understood to appreciate why:
  • Rainwater flowing over unearthed sulphide minerals may become acidic. When water becomes acidic, it dissolves toxic metals.
