Audio Interviews on Wetland Conservation

What is a wetland? Wetlands have been described as a "halfway world between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems that exhibit some of the characteristics of each." They form part of a continuous gradient between uplands and open water. Wetlands tend to have seasonal and fluctuating conditions that make it difficult for one definition to adequately describe all wetland types. Wetlands have many distinguishing features, the most notable of which are the presence of water, unique wetland (hydric) soils, and vegetation adapted to, or tolerant of, saturated soils. Wetlands are not easily defined, especially for legal and political purposes because:
  • they have a considerable range of hydrologic conditions they are often found along a gradient at the margins of well-defined uplands and deepwater systems they vary in size, location, and human influence.

    Why are Hawaii's Wetlands Vanishing?
It is a fact that Hawaii has been estimated to have less than 10% of their wetlands remaining today! Unfortunately, one of the wetland that has vanished over a period of 300 years, is one that is located right in our community, Kaelepulu Pond. Kaelepulu Pond was once a thriving wetland filled with native wildlife. It was also known as one of the few natural freshwater fishpond in the state of Hawaii. All of this has vanished and what is left is a polluted pond which is now called Enchanted Lake. ?Why are Hawaii?s Wetlands Vanishing is an interactive website filled with dynamic graphics, animations, sounds, video clips, and a learning center of interactive activities. It takes the viewers on a journey back to the past when the wetland was a thriving marshland and then completes its journey to present day. You will virtually see the changes that affected the habitat and wildlife of Kaelepulu Pond. Visit Site 2001 ThinkQuest USA Awards Gold Want to build a ThinkQuest site?

    Wetlands: An Introduction

"Wetlands" is the collective term for marshes, swamps, bogs, and similar areas. Wetlands are found in flat vegetated areas, in depressions on the landscape, and between water and dry land along the edges of streams, rivers, lakes, and coastlines.
    What Are Wetlands

The term "wetlands" encompasses a wide variety of aquatic habitats. Swamps, marshes, bogs, prairie potholes, flood plains, and fen - these are all names for ecosystems known as wetlands.
    The Wonder of Wetlands
Wetlands are where earth and water meet. They are almost as old as the planet itself, and are home to some of the richest biodiversity on Earth. They are to be found all over the world from the tropics to the frozen plains and are as crucial to the planet 's well-being as any other finely balanced part of nature. Wetlands Wetland, geographic area with characteristics of both dry land and water. Wetlands typically occur in low-lying areas at the edges of lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers, or in coastal areas protected from waves. They are found in a variety of climates on every continent except Antarctica. Wetlands There is clear water up to your ankles and a dragonfly zips past your head as you watch some ducks fly off the water - welcome to the soggy world of the wetland!

May is American Wetlands Month - Celebrate it!
VISION - "Informed landowners voluntarily deciding to protect and manage existing wetlands and restore and enhance drained and partially drained wetlands." The National Wetlands Conservation Alliance was an informal partnership of private organizations and government agencies that worked to facilitate voluntary landowner wetlands restoration, enhancement and conservation. The Alliance was formed to support landowner wetlands education and information, technical assistance, and funding programs to help landowners be better stewards of their wetlands. When formed in 1993 numerous small meeting were held for several years bringing together representatives of national organizations and Federal agencies. A major emphasis was put on supporting and improving USDA's Wetlands Reserve Program, Conservation Reserve Program and other "Farm Bill" programs, and the Fish and Wildlife Service's Partners for Wildlife and North American Waterfowl Management Plan programs.

Wetlands Educational Site of the North
Alpena, Michigan Just south of Alpena, Michigan is the brand new outdoor facility currently called "The Wetlands Classroom." It is a ten acre piece of prime coastal wetland property that has been adapted into an educational experience. The present "classroom" is a small building that serves as the interpretive center for the complex. The property has all the classical components of a Great Lakes Palustrine wetland, of the lagoon and barrier type. Several ancient beach ridges cross the property. A beautiful and extensive boardwalk system has been constructed across the wetland. Three educational gathering areas have been built into the design, which is all ADA approved. Here we see the view from the lakeside platform in panorama. The wet meadow with the fringing cattail marsh beyond is clearly seen behind the bird feeder. A shingle, shrubby beach ridge rises in the center part of the photograph, falling off to a beach swale on the right. To the right of the shore line, Thunder Bay and Alpena can be seen in the background. Another ancient beach ridge is just out of sight on the left. This platform is on the west side of the property and overlooks the shrub zone and wet meadow.
